iv. What are types of covalent bond? Explain with the help of example.
Covalent bond which formed by the mutual sharing of elections.
Single covalent bond formed by sharing of one electron pair.
Consider the formation of covalent bond in hydrogen molecule. A hydrogen atom has a single
valence electron. Two hydrogen atoms share their valence electrons to form a diatomic molecule .
Double covalent bonds are the bonds that are formed by sharing of two electron pairs.
Consider the formation of 02 molecules. Oxygen is in Group VI A. so it has 6 electrons in the valence
shell. It needs two electrons to complete its octet. so, for sharing each O-atom contributes two
electrons.
Triple covalent bond formed by the sharing of 3 electron pairs. Consider the formation of N 2
molecule. Nitrogen is in Group VA, so it has 5 electrons in the valence shell. It needs three electrons
to complete its octet. so for sharing each N-atom contributes three electrons
v. Describe hydrogen bonding and how hydrogen bonding is different from ionic bonding. Hydrogen
bonding is an intermolecular force of attraction in which hydrogen is covalently bonded to very
electronegative atom such as nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine. The interaction of such a highly electron

i. Differentiate between exothermic and endothermic reaction with the help of examples.
Exothermic reactions Endothermic reaction
A chemical reaction that proceeds with the A chemical reaction that proceeds with the
evolution of heat absorption of heat
Heat is transferred from system to surroundings. heat is transferred from surrounding to the system
Enthalpy of reaction (ΔH) is negative. Enthalpy of reaction (ΔH) is positive.
Example: Burning of fuel is highly exothermic Example: Freezing of water
reaction.
ii. Define catalyst and explain how it can lower the activation energy of a reaction?
A substance that accelerates a chemical reaction, but remains chemically unchanged at the end of the
reaction, is called a catalyst, and the phenomenon is called catalysis. The catalyst provides a new mechanism
for the reaction with low activation energy, Thus, a catalyst increases the rate of a reaction by lowering its
activation energy. The catalyst does not affect the overall thermodynamics or enthalpy of the reaction.
iii. Draw activation energy diagram for exothermic and endothermic reaction.
An effective collision (A) is one in which chemical bonds are broken and a product is formed. Effective
collision can occur only if the energy of colliding particles is high enough to overcome the repulsion
between the electrons and around reacting particles.
An ineffective collision (B) is one that does not result in product formation. Particles are not having
enough energy to overcome collision.

Q3) What is the difference between alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes? Provide examples of each.
Alkanes: Contain only single bonds between carbon atoms (e.g., Propane: C₃H₈).
Alkenes: Contain at least one double bond between carbon atoms (e.g., Ethene: C₂H₄). Alkynes:
Contain at least one triple bond between carbon atoms (e.g., Ethyne: C₂H₂).
Date: Section:
Q1) Describe the role of zinc and aqueous acid in the reduction of alkyl halides. What type of product is
formed as a result of this reaction?
Zinc reacts with aqueous acid to produce nascent hydrogen, which reduces the alkyl halide by replacing the
halogen atom with a hydrogen atom. The final product is an alkane. For example, CH₃Cl + 2[H] → CH₄ + HCl.
Q2) How does the molecular size of alkanes affect their physical state (gas, liquid, solid) at room
temperature?
Smaller alkanes (C₁–C₄) are gases at room temperature. Medium-sized alkanes (C₅–C₁₇) are liquids. Larger
alkanes (C₁₈ and above) are solids.
Q3) Compare the hydrogenation of alkenes and alkynes. Why do alkynes require two molecules of
hydrogen to become fully saturated?
Alkenes have one double bond, so they require only one molecule of hydrogen to form an alkane. Alkynes
have a triple bond, which requires two hydrogen molecules to break two bonds and form single bonds,
resulting in a saturated alkane.
Q4) Write the hydrogenation reaction of ethyne (C₂H₂) to ethane (C₂H₆). What role does
temperature play in this reaction?
Q5) What is combustion, and how is it classified into complete and incomplete combustion?
Combustion is a chemical reaction where a substance reacts with oxygen to release energy in the form of
heat and light.
Complete combustion occurs when there is enough oxygen, producing carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O)
as products.
Incomplete combustion happens when oxygen supply is limited, forming carbon monoxide (CO) or carbon
(soot) along with water.

Q1) What are some of the primary functions of proteins in the body?
Proteins perform many essential roles, including:
1. Acting as enzymes to catalyze chemical reactions.
2. Supporting structure in tissues (e.g., keratin and collagen).
3. Regulating body processes through hormones.
4. Aiding the immune system as antibodies.
5. Repairing body tissues and building muscle.
Q3) How does the body utilize carbohydrates as a source of energy, and what happens when carbohydrate
intake is insufficient?
Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which is used by cells as a primary energy source. When
carbohydrate intake is insufficient, the body starts using proteins and fats as alternative energy sources,
which can lead to muscle breakdown and increased fat metabolism.
Q4) What are the differences between DNA and RNA in terms of structure and function?
DNA is a double-stranded molecule that stores genetic information, while RNA is singlestranded and plays a
role in protein synthesis. DNA contains the sugar deoxyribose and uses thymine as a base, whereas RNA
contains ribose and uses uracil instead of thymine.
Q5) How are carbohydrates classified, and what are examples of each type?
Monosaccharides: Single sugars like glucose and fructose.
Disaccharides: Two sugars linked together, like sucrose and lactose.
Polysaccharides: Complex carbohydrates like starch and glycogen.

1. Height
2. Width
3. Depth
4. Distance/ Displacement
Q.5: Vernier scale reading has to be multiplied by least count of vernier callipers but main scale
reading doesn’t have to be. Why?
Answer:
For determining any length using the Vernier caliper, the Vernier scale reading needs to be multiplied by the
least count and should be added to the main scale reading to obtain the result. Therefore, the reading is
incomplete and inaccurate without the least count and zero error.

one direction.
Answer:
Radar Gun or Speed Gun calculates the exact speed of the ball because it measures the speed of the
rotating ball without any error.
Q.3: Can objects at rest be in motion at the same time? Explain with example.
Answer:
Yes. A body may be at rest relative to one object and at the same time it may be in motion relative to
another object. For example, a passenger sitting in a moving bus is at rest with respect to his fellow passenger but
he is in motion with respect to a man standing outside the bus.
Answer:
A rotating motion in which a body spins constantly around an axis is known as a rotatory motion. The major
difference between circular and rotatory motion is that in circular motion, the body rotates around a fixed axis that is
outside the body, but in rotational motion, the body's rotating axes are inside the body.
Answer:
Axis rotation defines the straight line that is passed from a point of a moving rigid body where all rotating
points of the body rotate in a circle. The Axis of rotation definition defines the axis of a rotating rigid body where all
points of the rotating substance rotate like a circle.

Chapter.3: Dynamics-I
Answer:
Each fundamental force has its own corresponding boson – the strong force is carried by the “gluon”,
the electromagnetic force is carried by the “photon”, and the “W and Z bosons” are responsible for the weak force.
Although not yet found, the “graviton” should be the corresponding force-carrying particle of gravity.
Answer:
The electroweak theory, shortly to become the standard model (SM), predicted that there must be a
neutral carrier for the weak force (called Z) as well as charged carriers (called W+ and W−), and that the Z must
give rise to weak neutral reactions, previously unseen.
Gravitational field strength is calculated using the formula g = GM/r², where G is the gravitational constant,
M is the mass, and r is the distance. In more detail, the gravitational field strength is a measure of the force of
gravity experienced by a hypothetical test mass placed at that point in the field.
Q.5: Why is it easier to push small child on swing compare to a large man?
Answer:
A smaller child requires less force and momentum due to their lighter weight and smaller size. A large
man may have less range of motion on a swing, making it more difficult to push them to higher heights.

given direction of movement.
Answer:
1) COG height.
Answer:
Friction decreases the energy of the system, by generating heat. As something slides on a surface for
example, it loses kinetic energy to friction, and the energy is released as heat and/or as small deformations of the
surface (such as by effectively polishing the surface) upon which the object is sliding.
Answer:
Unlike simple friction, the drag force is proportional to some function of the velocity of the object in that
fluid. This functionality is complicated and depends upon
2. its size,
3. its velocity,
Answer:
The size, shape, and orientation of an object determine the fluid force on that object. Swimmers and sky
divers change their shape and orientation by bending, twisting, and moving their arms and legs. This allows
them to manipulate the fluid forces and consequently to control their speed and direction of motion.

Chapter.5: Pressure and Deformation in Solids
Answer:
As altitude increases and atmospheric pressure decreases, the boiling point of water decreases. To
compensate for the lower boiling point of water, the cooking time must be increased. Turning up the heat will not help
cook food faster.
Q.2: Define Isobars. What is the unit of pressure used in weather maps?
Answer:
An isobar is a curve on a weather map that connects isobaric locations, which are locations with equal
atmospheric pressure as each other.
Answer:
In a hydraulic system, if you apply a small force over a small area, it gets transmitted through the hydraulic
fluid and acts over a larger area, thereby creating a larger force. The force is "multiplied" according to the ratio of the
two areas.
Q.4: Climbers at high altitudes face difficulty in breathing. Explain the reason.
Answer:
The density of the atmosphere varies with height. It is maximum at sea level and decreases rapidly as we go
up. That is why the climbers experience problems in breathing due to this decrease in the density of air. They
have to carry with them oxygen cylinders to be able to breathe at high altitudes.
Answer:
Mercury is used in barometers and not water. This is because the high density of mercury gives a reasonable
height of the column to measure atmospheric pressure. While a barometer using water, for instance, would need to
be 13.6 times higher column length than a mercury barometer to obtain the same pressure difference.

Answer:
If the velocity of a body is halved, its kinetic energy becomes one fourth as kinetic energy is directly
proportional to velocity squared.
Answer:
The principle of work and kinetic energy (also known as the work-energy theorem) states that the work

Chapter 7: Density and Temperature
• Density: During phase changes, density often changes because volume is affected. For example, when
ice melts into water, the molecules become more compact, increasing density. However, when water
boils into steam, it expands, causing a significant decrease in density.
• Relationship: Temperature changes drive phase transitions, while density changes are a consequence of
the volume adjustments that occur during these transitions.
• If the buoyant force is stronger than the object’s weight, it will float (like a rubber duck).
• If the buoyant force is weaker than the object’s weight, it will sink (like a rock).
• If the forces are equal, the object will stay suspended (like a jellyfish floating in the ocean).
Ans) An object submerged in a fluid experience an upward force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced.
• Ships Floating on Water – Even though ships are made of heavy steel, they float because their shape
allows them to displace a large amount of water, creating enough buoyant force to counteract weigh
Submarines – Submarines control their buoyancy by adjusting the amount of water in their ballast tanks.
When they take in more water, they become denser and sink; when they expel water, they become less
dense and float.
• Hot Air Balloons – Archimedes' principle applies to gases too! Heated air inside the balloon is less dense
than the cooler air outside, causing the balloon to rise.
• Ice Floating on Water – Ice is less dense than liquid water, which is why it floats rather than sinks in
oceans, lakes, and drinks.
• Defines the Kelvin scale – The Kelvin temperature scale is based on absolute zero, ensuring
measurements start from a true physical minimum.
• Entropy approaches a minimum – According to the Third Law of Thermodynamics, the disorder
(entropy) of a perfect crystal at absolute zero is minimal.
According to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, entropy in an isolated system always increases over time,
meaning natural processes tend to move toward disorder. For example:
• Ice melting: The ordered solid structure of ice turns into a more random liquid.
• Entropy Always Increases – In an isolated system, disorder (entropy) tends to grow over time,
meaning energy naturally spreads out and becomes less useful for performing work.
• Heat Flows from Hot to Cold – Without external energy input, heat always moves from a higher-
temperature region to a lower-temperature region, never the other way around. This explains why
ice melts in a warm room but never spontaneously refreezes.

Chapter no 8 : Magnetism
Q2) How Aurora (the dancing lights in the sky) forms at the poles?
Ans) Auroras the dancing lights in the sky, form near the Earth’s poles due to interactions between charged
particles from the sun and the Earth’s magnetic field. When charged particles from the solar wind collide with
gas molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere near the poles, they emit light, creating the stunning auroras. These
collisions are guided by the Earth’s magnetic field, leading to the characteristic displays of the northern lights
and southern lights near the North and south poles respectively.
Q3What role do magnets play in functioning of a hard disk drive?
Ans) Hard drives use disks made of magnetic material, called platters, to store information. An electromagnet
in the read/write head writes information to the disk by magnetizing small sections of the disk, called sectors,
in a one direction or another to indicate a 1 or a 0.
Q4) Why does a compass needle point toward the Earth’s magnetic north pole?
Ans) The magnetic field is a zone where the force is active along imaginary lines. From the south magnetic
pole to the north magnetic pole, this force has an effect on all magnetized objects, such as the needle of a
compass. Under the effect of Earth's magnetic field, the needle always points toward the north magnetic pole.
Q6) What is the shape of the magnetic field around a straight current-carrying conductor?
Ans) The magnetic field around a straight current-carrying conductor forms concentric circular loops around
the wire. These loops are centered on the conductor and get larger as you move further away.
This follows the Right-Hand Rule:
• If you point your thumb in the direction of the current, your curled fingers show the direction of the
magnetic field around the wire.
The strength of the magnetic field decreases as you move farther from the wire, meaning the loops become
weaker with distance.
