Activity 1:

> An online safe and healthy environment is when the internet is a place
where people can use apps or websites without getting bullied, scammed,
or seeing harmful stuff.
*Two ways to keep digital platforms safe and healthy:
Make sure there are rules and filters to stop bad or harmful content.
Teach users to be respectful and kind when they talk or post online.

> Community responsibility means everyone who uses the internet must
play their part to keep it safe and positive.
> It's important because if we all do our bit, like reporting bad behaviour
or helping others, the internet becomes a better place for everyone.

*Two reasons why people might be abusing social media more nowadays:
People feel like they can say or do anything online and not get
caught.
Some just want likes, shares, or attention, even if it means being
rude or posting lies.

* Young people need to know that what they do online can affect them
later on.

You might lose opportunities like jobs or school chances because of
what you post.
Being aware helps you avoid hurting others or getting into trouble

ACTIVITY 2:
*2.1 Four ways we can check how much social media abuse affects the youth:
Ask young people questions in a survey about what they go through online.
Look at school or clinic reports that show how many kids are affected.
Talk to victims to hear their stories and understand what’s going on.
Keep track of how often people report abuse or bad posts.
*2.2 Four reasons why sports stars get hate online:
They’re always in the public eye, so people judge them quick.
Fans get angry when their team loses and blame them.
Racism or sexism makes them easy targets.

They speak their minds and not everyone agrees with their opinions.
* 2.3 Why certain groups are more at risk of being scammed or attacked online:
> People like kids, old folks, or those who aren’t tech-savvy don’t always know how
to protect themselves online. Scammers take advantage of that because it’s easier
to fool them.

B. IMPACT ON INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES
*2.4 Two ways cyberbullying can mess with a Grade 12 learner:
They can get super anxious or depressed.
It can mess up their schoolwork because they can’t focus or feel safe.
2.5 How online hate can stop people from joining in on things like voting or
speaking out:
When people get judged or attacked online, they feel like their opinion
doesn’t count. So they end up staying quiet, not voting, or avoiding
conversations that matter.
*2.6 Two ways social media can help people stay safe online:
By posting easy tips and info on how to stay safe and avoid online drama.

By giving us tools to block or report people who are being toxic or shady.
C. EFFECTIVENESS OF POLICIES AND INTERVENTIONS

*Any South African law that helps make online spaces safer:
> There’s a law called POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act). It’s there to
protect our private info online and make sure apps and websites don’t misuse it. It
also helps guide how platforms should treat users’ info safely.

* Why it’s hard for young people to use government info about social media abuse:

The info is often too fancy or full of big words, so it’s hard to understand.
Not everyone has data or WiFi to access those websites or documents.
Most young people don’t even know where to find that kind of info or just
don’t trust it.

* How digital transformation campaigns can make the internet safer:
>These campaigns teach people how to act right online and protect themselves.
They also try to push for new rules and better education, so

more people can understand how to stay safe. It’s all about creating a better vibe
online for everyone.

*Is posting about discrimination on social media helpful?
> Yup, it can be:
It spreads the message fast and gets people’s attention.
It gives a voice to those who feel ignored or mistreated.
It makes others speak up and support the cause.
But it’s only really helpful if it leads to real change, not just likes or shares.
ACTIVITY 5:
5.1
*Explain the role that the media can play in encouraging citizens to stand
up against human rights violations taking place on social media.

> The media helps people see when human rights are being broken,
especially on social media. By sharing stories, videos, or news about these
issues, it makes people aware and encourages them to speak out. It also
shows how others are standing up, which can inspire more people to do
the same.
5.2
*Evaluate the extent to which an increased school-initiated social media
education could have on the cyber-safe practices used by the youth.

> If schools teach more about how to use social media safely, it can really
help young people protect themselves online. They’ll learn about setting
their privacy, avoiding scams, and not posting harmful stuff. This could
lead to less bullying online and a better online space. But it only works
well if the lessons are up-to-date and interesting for learners.
5.3
* Recommend ONE creative way in which citizens could be informed of
whether what they are about to post on social media conforms to the Bill
of Rights. In your answer, also indicate how your recommendation could
lead to a more inclusive digital environment.
> One cool idea is an app or tool that checks your post before you share it.
It can tell you if your post is fair and respectful, or if it might hurt
someone’s rights. This can help people think twice before posting
something negative. It would also make social media a friendlier and safer
place for everyone.
