Welcome to SEMINAR IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE Course./ My name’s
1,2 Lê Phương Thảo, lecturer from the Faculty of Foreign Languages./ Now let
me introduce the course to you.
Now, this course aims at providing all of you/ the learners a coverage of the
3 dispersal of the English language/ from the start of the fifth century to the
present day and the future of global English./
After learning the course,/ you will be able to present the information
related to the history of English,/ the dispersal of English as a lingual
franca,/ and the future of English. /You will be able to collect and evaluate

the information/ to make a presentation /on your own topics/ about the
development/ and the present status of English language. /You have to
accomplish the presentation in groups.
The course materials are the excerpts/ from “Global Englishes:/ A resource
book for students” /by Jenkin (2014);/ “Introducing Global Englishes”/ by
5 Galloway and Rose (2014);/ and “English as a Global Language” by Crystal
(2003)./
Mainly, you will learn with the lecturers’ videos,/ slides and script/ provided
on ELO LMS
Our course consists of 4 weeks with 4 Units./ In week 1 /we will learn Unit
1: /The history of English.
The following week/ we will continue with Unit 2:/ The early dispersal of
English around the world.
In week 3,/ we continue with Unit 3:/ Why is English an international lingua

franca?/ In this week we will have a discussion board/ in which/ your group
will choose the topic/ and present the outline of the presentation.
Week 4 is for Unit 4:/ The future of world Englishes./ We also have a
conference/ exchanging the information about the topic you are going to
present /and you can ask your teacher for the comments on what you are
doing./
After all/, you shouldn’t forget/ to do the exercises/ after each Unit because
they occupy 10% of the course result./
Now we look at the assessment./
There are two types of assessment./ The formative or progress assessment/
accounts for 40% of the weight/ and 60% belongs to the final examination./

The progress assessment consists of four components:/ attending the
discussions (10%),/ Attending the video conferences (10%),/ the four
multiple choice tests at the end of each chapter (20%)/
If you have any query,/ ask your instructor for help,/ and prepare yourself
8 suitable learning plans/ so that you can complete all the tasks on time./
