Class Test: Basics of Electric Vehicles

There are 5 questions; attempt any four. Each question is of 5 marks.

1. What are the key differences in energy conversion efficiency between conventional
internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and
how do these differences influence fuel economy?
2. Trace the major milestones in the evolution of electric vehicles from their inception in
the 19th century to their resurgence in the 21st century. What factors contributed to
their decline and later revival?
3. Compare the propulsion systems of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and a plug-in hybrid
electric vehicle (PHEV). How does the degree of electrification affect fuel consumption
and emissions reduction?
4. Discuss the environmental and social benefits of adopting electric vehicles in urban
areas. How can large-scale EV adoption influence air quality, noise levels, and public
health?
5. A conventional petrol car has an efficiency of 25%, while an electric vehicle has an
efficiency of 85%. If both vehicles are supplied with 50 kWh of energy, calculate the
useful mechanical work output for each. What is the ratio of useful work delivered by
the EV compared to the ICE vehicle?

Class Test: Basics of Electric Vehicles

There are 5 questions; attempt any four. Each question is of 5 marks.

1. Compare the overall energy efficiency and maintenance requirements of an electric

vehicle with that of a petrol-based internal combustion engine vehicle.
2. Outline the major phases in the historical development of electric vehicles. What
technological and societal factors led to their decline in the 20th century and resurgence
in the 21st century?
3. Differentiate between Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric
Vehicles (PHEVs), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles
(FCEVs) with respect to energy source and range capability.
4. A PHEV can travel 60 km on battery power alone, after which its fuel engine gives a
mileage of 20 km per liter. If the user drives 200 km, and electricity consumption for
60 km is 12 kWh (₹7 per kWh), while petrol costs ₹110 per liter, calculate the total
energy cost of the trip.
5. Explain the function of the control system in an electric vehicle. How does it coordinate
between the motor, battery, and power electronics to optimize performance and safety?
