What is Holy Week?
It is one of the most important popular annual celebrations in Christian culture,
commemorating the various stages of the Passion of Jesus Christ : from his entry
into Jerusalem to his Stations of the Cross, death, and resurrection. Holy Week is
one of the most intensely liturgical and ritual moments of Christianity each year.
When is Holy Week celebrated?
The celebration of Holy Week takes place on
variable dates, between March 22 and April 25 ,
always preceded by Lent and framed between
Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday.
Holy Thursday.
Holy Thursday commemorates the Institution of
the Eucharist in the celebration of the Holy
Offices.
This is where the divine covenant established by
Jesus and those who followed in his path was
established.
Main Events of Good Friday:
• Trial of Jesus: He is brought before Pilate, who, pressured by the
crowd, orders his crucifixion.
•
• Stations of the Cross: Jesus carries the cross on the way to
Calvary, where he is crucified.
• Death on the Cross: At 3:00 p.m., Jesus gives up his spirit.
• Descent and Burial: His body is taken down and placed in the tomb
of Joseph of Arimathea.
Holy Saturday
Holy Saturday is the day of silence and waiting during
Holy Week, commemorating the moment Jesus lay in
the tomb after his crucifixion. It is a day of meditation,
during which the Church spiritually accompanies Mary
in her sorrow and awaits the resurrection. During the
night, the Easter Vigil is celebrated, where the new fire
is lit, the baptismal water is blessed, and Christ's
resurrection is proclaimed.
Holy Sunday
Easter Sunday is the most important day in Christianity, as it
commemorates the resurrection of Jesus on the third day after his
death. It represents Christ's victory over sin and death, renewing
hope in eternal life. It is a day of joy and celebration, marking the
beginning of the Easter season, which extends until Pentecost.

Palms: a symbol of victory, triumph, peace, love, respect, and belief in the
figure of Jesus.
Bread and wine: symbolize eternal life, the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
Foot washing: represents the vocation of service and humility.
The candle: is a sign of the risen Christ and his light.
Purple: represents hope, the desire to find Jesus, and the spirit of
penitence.
The cross: Christ's victory over death and sin.
