THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE WITH REGULAR VERBS
Affirmative
I / You / We / They / He / She / It stayed at home.
Negative
I / You / We / They / He / She / It didn't stay at home.
Interrogative
Did I / you / we / they / he / she / it stay at home?
Short Answers
Yes, I / you / we / they / he / she / It did. No, I / you / we / they / he / she / It didn't.
We use the Simple Past Tense to talk about the actions and events that happened in the past.
■SPELLING RULES
Verbs ending "-e" take only "-d". “-e" ile biten fiiller, "-d” takısı alır. smile-smiled, dance-danced
Verbs ending in a consonant + -y drop the "-y" and take "-ied".
Sessiz harf +y ile biten fiillerde, "-y" düşer ve fiile ''-ied" takısı getirilir. cry - cried, fry - fried
Verbs ending in one stressed vowel between two consonants, double the last consonant and
take "-ed". Sessiz + sesli + sessiz harfile biten fiillerde, sondaki sessiz harf genellikle tekrarlanır ve
“-ed" takısı getirilir. stop - stopped, plan - planned
In negative sentences, we use didn't (did not) + main verb (simple form).
Olumsuz cümlelerde didn't (did not) + fiilin yalın halini kullanırız.
I didn't watch TV last night. → Dün gece televizyon izlemedim.

Alexander Fleming
Alexander Fleming was born in 1881 in Scotland. He went
to a small school in a village, and when he left school he

to go to university and study medicine. So he went to
London University and in 1906 he became a doctor. In 1915,
Fleming married Sarah McElroy, an Irish woman. They had
one son.
Fleming worked as a doctor in the First World War
(1914-18). During the war, many soldiers died in hospital
because they didn't have the right medicines. So after the
war, Fleming tried to find a drug that could help them.
He worked for many years and in 1928 he discovered a new
drug. It was the first antibiotic and he called it 'penicillin'.
He later worked with an Australian and a German scientist

Unit 4: Wild Animals
7 Read the text. Are the statements true or false?
My favourite animals are meerkats. They live in southern Africa in
the Kalahari Desert.
Meerkats are brown with grey stripes and black ears. They’re
quite small - about the same size as a rabbit. They've got a Iong
body and a long tail, but short legs. They can stand on two legs.
They live in groups. There are between five and thirty meerkats in
a group.
They sleep in holes in the ground. Early in the morning, they leave
their holes and look for food. They eat insects, plants, lizards, eggs
and mice. They can even eat poisonous animals like scorpions
and spiders. When meerkats eat. some of them stand on two legs
and guard the others. That’s because some other animals like to
eat meerkats. When the guards see an eagle, a snake or a fox,
they bark and all the meerkats run back to their holes.
10 Read the text. Are the sentences true or false? Correct the false sentences.
My favourite animal is a tiger. I think they're beautiful and exciting animals.
Tigers are the largest member of the cat family. They can be one metre
high and two or three metres long. They also have very long tails. Tigers
have beautiful black and orange striped fur, pointed ears and yellow
eyes. Their eyes shine in the dark.
Of course they also have both long claws and very sharp teeth!
Tigers live in Asia, in countries like India and Nepal. They live in either
forests or mountains. They usually live near trees so they can hide from
danger. In fact, tigers are endangered. This means there aren't many
tigers in the world. Sadly, people hunt them and kill them because they
want to take their beautiful fur.
Tigers eat meat. They hunt at night because they can see very well in the
dark. They eat large animals like deer. They can run very fast, but they
don't always catch their prey. Tigers sometimes kill humans, but not very
often!

Unit 4: Wild Animals
11 Read the text. Are the sentences true or false? Correct the false sentences.
How do you catch an 18-foot crocodile? Harry Land is
British, but he works at a university in South Africa and
studies crocodiles. He describes his work with some of the
most dangerous animals in the world.
'I work in a team. We study the crocodiles' behaviour and
look for their nests. We also watch their feeding habits, and
weigh and measure them. We're looking for changes in
their size or their habits in the last few years. We don't kill or
hurt them and we try to make sure they don’t kill or hurt us!
‘We catch crocodiles either with ropes or traps. We usually
catch the smaller crocodiles at night from boats. We use a
rope and pull them onto the boat. Then we immediately tie
up their mouths. Crocodiles have got very sharp teeth!
We also watch out for their strong tails. Some crocodiles are too big to catch in this way. Instead we
use traps on land.
Crocodiles are interesting creatures, but they’re also very frightening. Neither males nor females
like humans, but females are especially dangerous. This is because mothers get very angry when
people go near their nests.
Luckily, they don’t like large groups of people. I certainly wouldn’t go near a mother on my own.
I’m not brave enough! Small crocodiles have bitten me a few times and once a big crocodile
charged our boat. That experience was really frightening. But. I’ve never fallen in the water and
I never want to! On a hot day in the middle of a group of hungry crocodiles, you would really be in
trouble!’

Unit 7: Dreams
15 Read the text. Are the sentences True or False?
The future of computers
Computer technology is getting better every day and experts
say computers are going to control our lives. How? Let’s look at
some examples.
Have you got a personal computer? In the future we’ll all have
a lot of tiny computers. We'll have computers in our clothes
and in watches and jewellery. They’ll help us learn, give us
directions to places and pay for things. We’ll even have a
computer inside us. When we’re ill, it will send messages to a
‘computer doctor’. The ‘doctor’ will find out the problem, and
help us to become healthy again!
Do you play computer games? Well, research shows that
games are going to become much more exciting! In the
future, you won’t use a joystick. You’ll talk to the computer,
and the characters in the game will do what you say. Your
computer will film you, too. So you’ll be in the game!
Would you like a robot at home? Some lucky children have got
robot pets now and there are a lot of other robots. But there is
one problem, they can’t think! In the future we’ll have clever
robots. They’ll look like us, talk like us and do things like us.
That’s fantastic! ... Or is it scary?
False 4 Computer games will be boring. _____
1 In the future we'll all have one big computer. _____
2 We'll wear computers. ______ 5 At the moment robot pets can't think. ______
3 We won't visit the doctor. _____ 6 Robots will become like us. ______
