DC MACHINE AND TRANSFORMERS

Assignment – 3

1. A 6-pole, wave connected armature has 250 conductors and runs at 1200
rpm. The emf generated on open-circuit is 600 V. Calculate the useful
flux per pole.

2. The wave connected armature of a 2-pole, 200 V generator has 400

conductors and runs at 300 rpm. Calculate the useful flux per pole. If the
number of turns in each field coil is 1200, what is the average value of the
emf induced in each coil on breaking the field if the flux dies away
completely in 0.15 second?

3. The induced emf in a dc machine while running at 500 rpm is 180 volts.
Calculate the induced emf when the machine is running at 600 rpm.
Assume constant flux.

4. A shunt generator delivers 50 kW at 250 V and 400 rpm. The armature

resistance is 0.02 Ω and field resistance is 50 Ω. Calculate the speed of
the machine when running as a shunt motor and taking 50 kW input at
250 V.

5. A DC shunt machine, connected to 250 V mains, has an armature

resistance of 0.12 Ω and the resistance of the field circuit is 100 Ω.
Calculate the ratio of the speed as a generator to the speed as a motor, the
line current in each case being 80 A.

6. Deduce the equation of back emf of dc motors.

7. Prove that for any motor: 𝑇 ∝ 𝜙𝑖.

8. How does the speed of a dc motor can be controlled? Explain both the
methods.

9. Explain the OCC curve of a dc generator.
