Human Computer Interaction
Group Assignment
Core Objective: To apply the principles of Human-Computer Interaction
to the analysis, design, prototyping, and evaluation of a digital product
for a real-world problem. Students will learn that good design is a
process, not just a final interface.
List of Requirements for Students (The Assignment
Deliverables)
The project is broken down into four phases, mirroring a standard user-
centered design process. Each phase has specific deliverables.
Phase 1: Requirements Elicitation & User Research
(Understanding the Problem)
Goal: To understand the domain, identify different user groups, and
discover their genuine needs and pain points. Students must move
beyond their own assumptions.
Deliverables:
1. Stakeholder & User Analysis: Identify at least 4 distinct user types
For each, create a brief profile.
2. Competitive Analysis: Analyze 2-3 existing apps or websites and where
they have usability problems.
3. User Research Report: Conduct primary research. This must include:
o Surveys: Distribute to a small group (min. 10 people) to gather broad
preferences (e.g., "What's most important when booking a trip: price,
convenience, or unique experiences?").

o Interviews: Conduct in-depth interviews (min. 3 people) to understand
the emotional journey, frustrations, and delights of planning and booking
travel.
4. Personas: Based on your research, create 2 detailed personas. One
should be a primary user (e.g., "Adventure Seeker Alex") and one a
secondary user (e.g., "Budget-Conscious Bella"). Include their goals,
needs, frustrations, and a brief bio.
5. Scenarios & User Stories: For each persona, write 2-3 detailed
scenarios (short stories) describing how they would use a system to
accomplish a goal. From these, derive a list of functional user stories
(e.g., "As a Family Vacation Planner, I want to filter hotels by 'family-
friendly amenities' so that I can quickly find suitable options.").
Phase 2: Design & Prototyping (Creating the Solution)
Goal: To translate the requirements into a concrete, interactive design.
Deliverables:
1. Task Analysis & Workflow Diagrams: Map out the primary user
journeys. For example, diagram the complete flow for the task: " This
should include all decision points and steps.
2. Low-Fidelity Prototypes (Sketches/Paper Prototypes): Create hand-
sketched screens for the key user journeys identified above. Focus on
layout, information hierarchy, and flow without any visual design details.
3. Wireframes: Using a tool like Figma, Adobe XD, or even PowerPoint,
create digital wireframes for all major screens. These should be in
grayscale and focus solely on structure, functionality, and placement of
elements.
Phase 3: Evaluation (Testing the Solution)
Goal: To test the design with real users, identify usability issues, and
propose improvements.

Deliverables:
1. Usability Test Plan: Design a test to evaluate your high-fidelity
prototype. Include:
o Objectives: What do you want to learn? (e.g., "Can users successfully
book a tour within 3 minutes?")
o Recruitment: Describe your test participants (must match your
personas).
o Tasks: A list of 4-5 concrete tasks for users to perform (e.g., "You want
to go to Spain next month. Find a historical tour in Barcelona and book it
for two adults.").
o Metrics: What will you measure? (e.g., success rate, time-on-task, error
rate, user satisfaction).
2. Conduct Tests: Each group member must observe at least one usability
test session. Conduct tests with at least 3-5 participants.
3. Usability Findings Report: Summarize the results. Include:
o A table of the quantitative metrics.
o A list of the top 5-7 most critical usability issues observed, quoted with
user comments and annotated with screenshots from your prototype.
o For each issue, provide a concrete recommendation for how to fix
it.
Phase 4: Final Report & Presentation (Communicating the
Process)
Goal: To synthesize all work into a professional report and present
findings to the "class" (acting as stakeholders).
Deliverables:
1. Comprehensive Design Report: A single PDF document that walks
through the entire HCI process from research to evaluation. It should
include all the deliverables from Phases 1-3, formatted neatly with an
introduction and conclusion.
3|Page
2. Group Presentation: A 10-minute presentation covering:
o The problem and key research insights.
o The design solution (showcasing key screens and the prototype).
o A summary of usability testing and how it informed iterative design.
o A live demo of the final interactive prototype.
o Lessons learned from the project.
Note:
The number of pages for the documentation is not restricted.
Use proper formatting style, grammatical style, Alignment.
Include the references [published article, books, white
paper…] that you have used.
