Overview of the Human Skeleton

The human skeleton is a framework of approximately 206 bones that provides shape, supports movement, and protects vital organs. Its main functions include support, protection, movement, blood cell production, and mineral storage. The skeleton is divided into the axial skeleton (skull, spine, ribcage) and the appendicular skeleton (arms, legs, shoulders, hips).

Study Note: The Human Skeleton

The skeleton is the framework of bones in the human body. It gives shape, supports movement,
and protects important organs. An adult human has about 206 bones.

1. Main Functions of the Skeleton

• Support – It holds the body upright.
• Protection – Protects organs (e.g., skull protects the brain, ribs protect the heart and lungs).
• Movement – Bones work with muscles to help us move.
• Production of blood cells – Bone marrow makes red and white blood cells.
• Storage – Stores minerals like calcium and phosphorus.

2. Divisions of the Skeleton

• Axial Skeleton: Skull, spine, and ribcage (central part of the body).
• Appendicular Skeleton: Arms, legs, shoulders, and hips (helps in movement).

■ Without the skeleton, our bodies would be soft and shapeless. It is the body’s strong framework!
