Analysis of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) 1
Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) are complex setups used in modern manufacturing that allow
for adaptability in production. To improve their design and operation, various analytical techniques can
be applied.

1. Deterministic Models
• Provide rough estimates of key system parameters such as production rate, capacity, and utilization.

2. Queueing Models
•Use mathematical theories of queues to model how jobs or products wait in the system.

3. Discrete Event Simulation

•A computer-based method that simulates specific events in the system to replicate real-world
operations.
4. Other Approaches
•Mathematical Programming: Used for optimization problems in FMS design and operations.
•Heuristic Methods: Simplified problem-solving techniques based on experience or trial-and-error.

BOTTLENECK MODELS 2

The bottleneck model, developed by Solberg, is a deterministic model used to estimate the
performance of production systems, including Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS).
Here's a simplified explanation:

•Bottleneck Concept: The bottleneck in a production system is the slowest part or resource
(e.g., a machine, workstation, or process) that limits the system's overall output.

•Output Limitation: Since the bottleneck restricts the production flow, the system's output
cannot exceed the bottleneck's capacity.

WHICH ONE IS THE BOTTLENECK STATION?

Even though Station B has the highest total workload, Station C becomes the bottleneck because each server at
Station C is busier than servers at Stations A or B.
