Class 9 Physics - Sound Chapter: Important Formulas with Solved Examples

1. Speed of Sound (v)

Formula: v = f × lambda

Where:

- v = speed of sound (m/s)

- f = frequency (Hz)

- lambda = wavelength (m)

Example: If the frequency of a sound wave is 256 Hz and its wavelength is 1.35 m, find its speed.

Solution:

v = f × lambda = 256 × 1.35 = 345.6 m/s

2. Time Period (T)

Formula: T = 1 / f

Where:

- T = time period (seconds)

- f = frequency (Hz)

Example: If frequency is 500 Hz, find the time period.

Solution:

T = 1 / 500 = 0.002 seconds

3. Frequency (f)

Formula: f = 1 / T

Where:

- f = frequency (Hz)

- T = time period (seconds)

Example: If time period is 0.005 s, find frequency.

Solution:
f = 1 / 0.005 = 200 Hz

4. Wavelength (lambda)

Formula: lambda = v / f

Where:

- lambda = wavelength (m)

- v = speed of sound (m/s)

- f = frequency (Hz)

Example: Speed of sound = 340 m/s, frequency = 170 Hz. Find wavelength.

Solution:

lambda = 340 / 170 = 2 m

5. Echo Formula

Formula: Distance = (Speed × Time) / 2

Echo distance is divided by 2 because sound travels to the obstacle and back.

Example: If echo returns in 4 seconds and speed of sound is 340 m/s, find distance to the wall.

Solution:

Distance = (340 × 4) / 2 = 680 m

6. Intensity of Sound (conceptual)

Formula: I is proportional to (Amplitude)^2

Intensity is proportional to the square of the amplitude. No direct numerical but useful for reasoning

questions.

Example: If amplitude doubles, intensity becomes 4 times.
