Essay Intro – Novel Study

Minds On

Here are the 9 "this or that" prompts I shared with the 7s to help them practice Thesis Statement
development. It's also a fun minds-on activity!

 Beach or Mountains?
 Pizza or Cheeseburgers?
 Cats or Dogs?
 Visual Art or Music?
 Friday nights or Sunday mornings?
 Spring or Fall?
 When choosing a movie, comedy or thriller?
 Pickles...yes or no?
 Waffles or Pancakes?

They should write sentences like: I prefer Beaches because I enjoy swimming and the sunshine
OR I prefer Sunday mornings because I like to sleep in and eat brunch.

After they finished this minds-on, I went into the Outline that uses the Cats or Dogs example,
showing them a sample Thesis Statement with 3 supporting points. I emphasized that my
examples in that Outline are different than theirs will be - they need to use quotes from Son.

Finally, I went into the Essay Instructions document and explained the prompts, along with the
Essay Specifications.

Their deliverables from the Intro class:

 Choose a topic
 Create Thesis Statement
 Outline Supporting Points (3 reasons why their Thesis is true).
 Begin finding Quotes from Son.
