Bridge Engineering Tutorial-3 August 29, 2025
Problem:Q1 It is proposed to construct a double lane slab bridge with crash barriers
in both sides, but no footpath is provided. The total span is 11m. The size of
bearings is 450mm × 450mm. The concrete grade is M30 and the steel grade is
Fe415. The thickness of wearing coat is 65mm. The 70R Tracked vehicle is having
two tracks of size 840mm × 4570mm carrying 35t each. The inner spacing of two
tracks is 1220mm making total width as 2900mm.
(i) Provide a suitable cross-section of the bridge and specifiy the total width
and overall depth of the bridge.
(ii) Calculate bending moment and shear force due to self weight.
(iii) Calculate maximum bending moment due to one track of class 70RT loading
assuming α=2.5 and impact factor as 1.1.
(iv) Calculate design bending moment and check the depth of the slab.
(v) Calculate longitudinal reinforcement considering bending and provide rein-
forcement.
Problem:Q2 The effective span of a double lane slab bridge is 10m. The footpaths
are provided in both sides and crash barriers are provided at both ends. The
concrete grade is M30 and the steel grade is Fe415. The maximum bending moment
for the single IRC 70R loading may be taken as 1100kNm.
(i) Provide a suitable cross-section of the bridge and specifiy the total width of
the bridge.
(ii) Assume suitable depth of slab and calculate bending moment and shear
force due to self weight assuming the thickness of wearing coat as 65mm.
(iii) Calculate design bending moment and provide the depth of the slab.
(iv) Calculate longitudinal reinforcement considering bending and provide rein-
forcement.
