OPERATING ROOM INFECTION CONTROL POLICY

I. Purpose

To prevent and control infections in the operating room (OR) by


implementing evidence-based practices that ensure patient and staff
safety.

II. Scope

This policy applies to all personnel working in or entering the OR,


including surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, technicians, and
cleaning staff.

III. Responsibilities

 Infection Control Officer: Oversees implementation and


compliance.
 OR Supervisor: Ensures staff adherence to protocols.
 All Staff: Must follow infection control procedures.

IV. Key Policies and Procedures

A. Hand Hygiene

 Perform hand hygiene before and after patient contact, after


removing gloves, and after contact with contaminated surfaces.
 Use alcohol-based hand rubs or soap and water.

B. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

 Wear appropriate PPE (gloves, gowns, masks, eye protection)


based on the procedure and risk of exposure.
 Change PPE between patients and dispose of properly.

C. Environmental Cleaning

 Clean and disinfect all surfaces and equipment between


procedures.
 Use EPA-approved disinfectants.
 Terminal cleaning of the OR must be done daily.

D. Sterilization and Disinfection

 Follow Spaulding classification for reprocessing instruments.


 Use autoclaves or approved high-level disinfectants.
 Maintain logs of sterilization cycles and biological indicators.

E. Traffic Control

 Limit OR access to essential personnel only.


 Keep doors closed during procedures.
 Designate clean and contaminated zones.
F. Surgical Site Infection (SSI) Prevention

 Administer prophylactic antibiotics as per guidelines.


 Use sterile technique during procedures.
 Monitor and report SSIs to infection control.

G. Waste Management

 Dispose of sharps in puncture-resistant containers.


 Segregate infectious waste and handle it according to local
regulations.

H. Staff Health and Immunization

 Ensure staff are vaccinated (e.g., Hepatitis B, Influenza).


 Screen for communicable diseases.
 Restrict ill staff from OR duties.

V. Training and Compliance


 Conduct regular training on infection control practices.
 Perform audits and provide feedback.
 Report non-compliance to the Infection Control Officer.
