Inhalation Process Explained

During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and flattens, increasing the thoracic cavity's length and volume. The external intercostal muscles contract while internal intercostal muscles relax, causing the rib cage to expand. This results in decreased air pressure in the lungs, allowing atmospheric air to flow in through the nasal passage.

INHALATION

 During inhalation the diaphragm contracts and becomes flattened

 The length of the thoracic cavity (top to bottom distance) increases
 The external intercostal muscles contract and the internal intercostal muscles relax, the rib-
cage moves outwards and upwards
 This causes the thoracic cavitiy to be enlarged from side to side, back to front
 The TOTAL VVOLUME of the thoracic cavity increases
 Air pressure in the lungs decreases
 Since atmospheric pressure is GREATER than the AIR PRESSURE in the lungs, air rich in
oxygen is drawn in through the nasal passage to the lungs
