Introduction
Consumers are the backbone of the market. Every person is a consumer of goods and services.
To protect consumers from exploitation and unfair practices, the concept of consumer rights was
introduced. In India, the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 (revised in 2019) provides safeguards
and promotes consumer welfare.

Consumer Rights
1. Right to Safety – Protection from hazardous goods and services.

2. Right to Information – Details about quality, price, expiry, etc.

3. Right to Choose – Freedom to choose from various products.

4. Right to be Heard – Consumers’ voices in policymaking and complaints.

5. Right to Seek Redressal – Compensation for unfair practices.

6. Right to Consumer Education – Awareness about rights and responsibilities.

Consumer Responsibilities
• Be aware of product details before buying.

• Check standard marks like ISI, AGMARK, Hallmark, FSSAI.

• Ask for bills/receipts after every purchase.

• File complaints against unfair trade practices.

Consumer Protection Act, 2019

The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 replaced the 1986 Act. Key features include regulations for
e-commerce transactions, strict penalties for misleading advertisements, and Consumer Dispute
Redressal Commissions at District, State, and National levels.

Reflection

Through this project, I learned that consumer rights empower us to make better choices, fight
exploitation, and ensure fairness in the marketplace. Awareness is the first step to becoming a
responsible consumer.

Conclusion
Consumer rights are essential for a fair market and the well-being of society. Awareness and
enforcement of these rights make every consumer strong and protect them from exploitation.
