THE CULTURAL IMPACT OF COVID-19

While there have been global crises before, never has one affected as many lives so directly in our
lifetime. The enforcement of social distancing and physical health precautionary measures has closed
schools, ended professional sports seasons, shut down airports, and forced many businesses to cease
operations, while others adapted to carry on virtually. Such dramatic environmental changes have led
to a shift in values, both individually and collectively.
A SHIFT IN PERSONAL VALUES
Personal values reflect what matters most to us as an individual, thus shape the way we
behave. When personal values are in alignment with those of the organization, employees
feel a sense of connection and are able to bring their full selves to work in commitment to
its purpose.
Personal values are fairly consistent over time, but when life conditions change, it can
cause people to shift their values and reevaluate the order of their priorities. We have
seen such a shift in personal values take place because of this pandemic.
When compared with personal values Pre-COVID, we have seen four new values emerge in
top priority during the pandemic: making a difference, adaptability, well-being, and
caring. The values of continuous learning and family were already present Pre-COVID
and have since increased in priority. This shift in values reflects the need that people are
feeling to take care of one another amidst the changes and uncertainty in the current
culture.

II -Lesson
Change is generally pervasive and takes place in culture, society, and politics. Changes in
culture bring change in society and human beings; likewise, changes in society and human beings
brings change in culture and politics (Panopio: 263).
Social Change refers to variations or modifications in the patterns of social organization, of sub-
groups within society, or of the entire society itself. This may be may be manifested in the rise or fall of
groups, community or institutional structures and functions or changes in the statuses and roles of
members in the family, work setting, church, government, school, and other subsystems of the social
organization (Panopio: 364).
There are three causes of social change:
Invention-is often defined as a new combination or a new use of existing knowledge. It can be
classified into material inventions (e.g. bow and arrow, mobile phone, airplane) and social inventions
(e.g. alphabet, texting, jejemon)
Diffusion refers to the spread of culture traits from one group to other. It creates changes as
cultural elements spread from one society to another through trade, migration, and mass
communication.
Discovery- takes place when people reorganized existing elements of the world they had not
noticed before or learned to see in a new way.

Discovery influences societal understanding by enabling people to perceive existing elements of their environment in new ways. This shift in perception can lead to cultural change as people adopt new ways of thinking and behaving based on newfound insights. For instance, the recognition of environmental conservation as a priority has led to cultural shifts towards sustainability. Discovery often challenges established norms and encourages societies to reorganize or reinterpret existing knowledge, fostering innovation and transformation in cultural practices .

Social, cultural, and political changes are interrelated and mutually influential. Cultural changes, such as shifts in values or technological adoption, often lead to alterations in social structures. Conversely, changes in society, like the emergence of new social roles or institutions, influence cultural norms and practices. Political changes, including policy adjustments or governance reforms, can drive or respond to cultural and social shifts, ensuring alignment with current societal values and needs. This interplay forms an ongoing cycle where each domain continuously impacts and reshapes the others .

The COVID-19 pandemic led organizations to realign with shifts in employee values as personal and collective priorities changed. With values like adaptability, well-being, and making a difference becoming more significant, organizations needed to focus on these aspects to maintain employee engagement. When personal values align with those of an organization, employees are more committed to its purpose and bring their full potential to work. Thus, the pandemic compelled businesses to emphasize areas such as health, flexibility, and social responsibility in their operations .

Shifts in personal values during crises such as COVID-19, with increased importance placed on making a difference, adaptability, well-being, and caring, can strengthen societal cohesion and resilience. These values emphasize the need for collective support and personal responsibility, contributing to a community's ability to respond and adapt to challenging situations. By prioritizing these values, individuals are more likely to engage in cooperative actions and support systems that foster unity and resilience in the face of adversity .

The evolution of public transportation in the Philippines illustrates broader social, cultural, and political changes by showcasing technological advancements and responses to societal needs. In the 19th century, traditional means like horse-drawn carriages were prevalent. By the 20th century, motorized vehicles became common, reflecting industrial and technological progress. In the 21st century, modern forms like electric and hybrid vehicles indicate shifts towards sustainability and modernization. These transitions highlight technological growth, changing cultural attitudes towards mobility and environmental considerations, and political shifts towards infrastructure development .

The alignment of organizational and personal values is crucial for sustaining employee engagement during times of change. When employees perceive that their values resonate with the organization's mission and practices, they are more likely to feel connected and committed. During the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations that emphasized values such as well-being and adaptability were better positioned to maintain engagement, as employees could see a direct link between their priorities and the organization's goals. This alignment facilitates a supportive work environment that encourages employees to invest fully in their roles .

Historical changes in transportation reflect broader technological, cultural, and political shifts through the adoption and development of new technologies that transform societal mobility. For example, the transition from horse-drawn carriages to motor vehicles and later to public transit options like trains and buses indicates technological advancement. Culturally, these shifts reflect changing values towards convenience and efficiency. Politically, they often involve significant infrastructure projects and regulations to support new technologies, demonstrating government adaptation to societal needs .

The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant environmental changes, such as social distancing and the closure of many in-person facilities. These changes prompted individuals to reevaluate their personal values. Prior to COVID, personal values are generally stable over time but can shift with changing life circumstances. During the pandemic, four new priority values emerged: making a difference, adaptability, well-being, and caring. Additionally, values like continuous learning and family, which were already important, increased in priority. This shift reflects a collective need to support one another and adapt amidst uncertainty .

The three main causes of social change are invention, diffusion, and discovery. Invention involves new combinations or uses of existing knowledge, which can be material (e.g., mobile phones) or social (e.g., texting). Diffusion is the spread of cultural traits across societies through means such as trade and mass communication, leading to cultural shifts and integration. Discovery occurs when people perceive existing elements in new ways, leading to changes in understanding and practice. These causes introduce variations and modifications in the patterns of social organization, which in turn can affect community or institutional structures and functions .

Diffusion facilitates cultural changes by spreading cultural traits and elements between societies, which can lead to the adoption of new practices, technologies, or beliefs. The primary channels for diffusion include trade, which introduces goods and technological innovations; migration, which brings cultural practices to new areas; and mass communication, which disseminates ideas and information rapidly across geographical boundaries. These channels enable cultural elements to permeate different societies, fostering integration and enrichment of cultural diversity .
