SESSION 2: My Self - Esteem as a Parent
Activity: Sing the song “ Today My Life Begins”
Direction: Form a group and select a secretary and representative each
group for reporting/sharing.
Processing: Insights by asking the following questions:
1. What did you learn from the song?
2. What is self-esteem?
3. What is the impact of the song in relation to your self-esteem?
4. Do you think it is good to develop high self-esteem? Why?
5. Do you know how to improve your self - esteem?
KEY LEARNING POINTS:
* Self-esteem is how a person feels and think about himself.
It may be positive: “I’m smart”, “ I look good”
It may be negative: “ I’m ugly” , I am no good”
“I am afraid to make mistakes”
* Positive experiences and fulfilling relationships can help raise self -
esteem while negative experiences and troubled relationships contribute
to low self-esteem.
* Parents with high self-esteem are more productive and fully functional.
* A parent with high self-esteem has a sense of self-respect, knows his
values and has positive outlook in life.
* Parents with low self-esteem are less productive and have no direction
in life.
* A parent with low self-esteem doesn’t see his value or worth, an
insecure parent and has a negative and critical outlook in life.

MODULE 2: THE FILIPINO FAMILY
SESSION 1: Understanding the Dynamics of Filipino Family

PARENTING STYLES
* Ang Parenting Styles ay tumutukoy sa paraan kung paano ang isang
magulang ay nakikisalamuha at nakikitungo sa kanyang anak. Naka
paloob dito ang mga patakaran, inaasahan, at paraan ng pagdidisiplina ng
magulang sa kanyang anak.
Noong 1969, ang English Philosopher na si John Locke ay
nagsabing ang mga bata ay ipinanganak na may “tabula rasa” o blank
slate. Ang parenting style ng isang magulang ay maaaring makaapekto,
hindi lamang sa self-esteem at pisikal na kalusugan ng mga bata, kundi
maging sa kanilang mga values at paniniwala, sa kung paano sila
tumanggap ng tagumpay at pagkatalo, at sa kung paano sila makitungo sa
mga tao sa paligid nila.
FOUR PARENTING STYLES
1. AUTHORITARIAN
- Naniniwalang ang mga bata ay dapat na sumusunod lamang sa mga
patakaran na sila mismo ang nagtakda
- Kilala sa linya tulad ng “ Dahil sinabi ko”
- Gumagamit ng mga punishment/parusa upang magdisiplina ng bata

2. AUTHORITATIVE
- Nagtatakda ng mga patakaran o parusa sa mga karampatang aksyon,
ngunit isinasama ang mga bata sa proseso ng pagtatakda nito upang mas
maintindihan ito ng mga bata
- Binibigyang pansin ang mga saloobin ng mga bata
- Positive discipline
- Pagkakaroon ng praise and reward system
- Sinisigurong napakikinggan at navavalidate ang nararamdaman ng bata.
- Kinikilala bilang pinaka epektibong parenting style

3. PERMISSIVE
- Naniniwalang mas natututo ang bata kung siya ay minsang hinahayaan
- Naniniwalang “ Kids will be kids”
- Mas forgiving at hindi gaanong nagstick sa mga patakaran at parusa
- Hindi mahigpit lalo kung ang bata ay nangakong siya ay magiging
mabait “ friend role” kaysa “ parent role”
- Nag aanyaya sa mga bata na mas magkwento tungkol sa kanyang mga
karanasan o iniisip, ngunit hindi masyadong nagtatakda ng rules
pagdating sa bad behavior at poor choices.

- Hindi gaanong nagtatanong tungkol sa school at mga gawain
- Nagkukulang sa guidance, pangangalaga, at pagbibigay ng atensyon sa
bata.
- Maaring dahil na ooverwhelm na sa pagbabayad ng bills, pag aasikaso
sa bahay, trabaho, at iba pang problema sa loob ng tahanan.

MODULE 4: CHILD DEVELOPMENT

KEY LEARNING POINTS:
*GROWTH- refers mainly to changes in physical size
*DEVELOPMENT - involves character changes in complexity and
function from immature to mature, from simple to complex
*CHILD DEVELOPMENT - involves changes from immature to
mature behaviorand from simple to complex patterns of behavior. In
other words, it refers to the evolution of a human being from a dependent
child to an independent child.
- It is the process of change in which the
child learns to handle more complex levels of moving, thinking, feeling
and interacting with people and objects in the environment.
1. Your child development is complex. It is determined by multiple
factors from the very beginning of life.
2. Your baby has five senses - sight, smell, taste and touch. These are all
working from the moment he/she is born.
3. Your children grow and develop differently from one another due to
environmental influences.
4. Your children characteristics are just subject to environmental
influences which can support, facilitate their development.
5. Environmental influences stem from:
*Nurturing environment of child’s caregiver
* Societal and cultural influence mediated by parental figures
6. There are five major domains of child development:
* Physical dimension - the ability to move and coordinate
* Social dimension - the ability to relate to other
* Cognitive/ intellectual dimension - the ability to think and learn
* Emotional dimension - the ability to develop positive feelings for self
and others
* Moral and Spiritual - ability to understand goodness and live a good
life
7. All these aspects of development should complement and support each
other.
8. Good health and nutrition, affection and mental stimulation, security
and moral support are very important for your children’s growth and
development.
9. To facilitate or maximize your children’s learning satisfy all five
senses by providing concrete experiences, play or other forms of
interactions and activities.
Synthesis:
Your children grow according to the same pattern, they each
develop at their own unique way and pace. As parents, you play a major
role in facilitating your children’s development by providing a
stimulating environment.
HANDLING CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMANTAL DELAYS
AND EARLY DETECTION AND MANAGEMENT OF
CHILDHOOD DISABILITIES

* DEAFNESS AND HARD OF HEARING
- Impairment in hearing where the function or structure in the
auditory system (outer, middle and inner ear) primary affects the child’s
ability to develop speech, language and social skills.
Cause: Genetics, maternal infection, complications at birth or acquired
through injuries ( e.g. trauma to the ear/head, extreme exposure to loud
sounds) and other diseases.
Interventions:
Assistive device and environmental modification
* VISUAL IMPAIRMENT AND BLINDNESS
Visual impairment and blindness is any kind of vision loss or an
impairment in vision that even with correction adversely affects the
child’s educational performance
Cause: Disease, injury or medical condition
Interventions: Medication or surgery, visual aids, assistive device and
technological aids
Primary source for learning is through tactile and auditory inputs
* ORTHOPEDIC AND MOBILITY IMPAIRMENT
Orthopedic and mobility impairment is an impairment caused by
congenital anomalies that adversely affect the child’s educational
performance.
Interventions: Consult and work with professional healthcare workers
Three Categories:
1. Neuromotor impairments - an abnormality or damage to the brain or
nervous system such as cerebral palsy.
2. Degenerative disease - affects mostly motor development and most
disease is muscular dystrophy
3. Musculoskeletal disorders - result of various levels of physical
limitations such as limb deficiency.
MODULE 5: KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE FROM ABUSE
SESSION 1: Child’s Right And Responsibilities
Activity: Identifying the Child Rights with corresponding Parenrs

corresponding parents responsibilities.

- Introduce the rights of a child and clustered into 4 broad categories
1. Survival
* The rights of the child for her to live. These include food, health, shelter
and clothing

* The rights of a child for him or her to attain his full potential. These
include education, rest and recreation, spiritual activity , love and care.
3. Protection
* The rights of the child for him to be supported and protected. These
include protection from mental, physical or sexual abuse, neglect and
exploitaion.
4. Participation
* The rights of the child which will enable him to express his feelings and
thoughts . These include his or her right to speak his or her own opinion,
to have access to good and important information, to be with his or her
own peers, and his or her right to a name and nationality which he or she
needs to be identified as a member of a family, community or society.

SESSION 3: PREVENTING CHILD ABUSE
Activity: Role playing with script
Direction: Ask for 5 volunteers & CDW will act as a narrator
Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes
Lucy: She is cooking the evening meal. But she also has to take care of
her 2 children who are aged six and two years old while doing this. She is
normally a caring and loving mother but tonight she is very tense because
she is late in doing her cooking. She ends up spanking Mario and
shouting at Ana.
Mario: He is 8 years old. Tonight, he is already very hungry. He likes to
make a lot of noise with ordinary things. He also likes to tease his
younger sister.
Ana: She is barely 3 years old. She wants full attention of her mother.
She is also angry at her brother who is bothering her.
Aling Maring: She is mother of Lucy. She is busy watching tv. She is
resting because of her bad back.
Roberto: He is husband of Lucy. He comes home very hungry and very
tired from work. He sees his wife who is still busy cooking. He is getting
impatient because he wants to eat quickly so he can rest for tomorrows
work.
Processing: After the role playing, ask the following questions.
1. Who are the character in the story?
2. What happened in the story?
3. What do you feel when you are stressed or tensed?
4. What are the causes of tension?
5. What happened to the children as a result of tension in the family?
6. What frequent do you suppose this type of situation occur in the real
life?
7. What can we do to avoid these types of stresses?
KEY LEARNING POINTS:
* Parents are the most influential person in the family. They lead all the
family in all activities at home particularly the activities of the children.
The way they relate to their children is highly influenced and affected by
their daily disposition or state of mind and feelings.
* When there is pressure such as unfinished tasks or argument parents,
their anger may lead them towards physically or verbally abusing their
children.
* When experiencing stress, learn to recognize it and start telling
yourself to relax. Stretching and deep breathing can help. You may also
do other productive activities which can help lighten up your feelings or
mood such as gardening or listening to music. You may talk to a friend or
sister or to somebody you can trust.
* Prevent child abuse by:
1. Recognizing early warning signs and learning to relax
2. Establishing family support network
3. Creating an environment that teaches children protective and
responsive behavior skills.
MODULE 6: BUILDING CHILDREN POSITIVE BEHAVIOR
Methodology: Groupings/small group discussion
Direction: Count down 1,2,3,4. Then choose a leader to report their
output

Socio-Emotional Development
- Napakaraming aspeto ng development ng mga bata at isa na rito ay ang
kanilang socio-emotional development. Ito ay tumutukoy sa kanilang
abilidad na:
* Magkaroon ng positibong relasyon sa ibang tao.
* Maramdaman, ipakita at pamahalaan ang kanilang mga emosyon.
* Kilalanin at makipag ugnayan sa kanilang kapaligiran. Iba-iba ang
socio-emotional na katangian, hamon at pangangailangan ng mga bata na
nakadepende sa kanilang age group.
