a phenomenon where lead sulfate crystals form on the battery's electrodes, leading to reduced
capacity and performance. Finally, the impact of temperature on battery performance, such as
overcharging and overheating, is not adequately addressed.
Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in developing improved charging systems for lead-
acid batteries to overcome these limitations. These advanced systems incorporate sophisticated
charging algorithms that monitor the battery's SoC and adjust the charging rate accordingly.
Additionally, pulse charging techniques are employed to mitigate the effects of sulfation.
Furthermore, temperature sensors are integrated into the charging systems to prevent overcharging
and overheating.
The purpose of this project is to develop an improved charging system for lead-acid batteries that
addresses these limitations and provides enhanced performance, longer battery life, and reduced
environmental impact. The project entails a comprehensive study of the factors influencing battery
performance and environmental impact, as well as the design and testing of a prototype charging
system.
The ultimate goal of this project is to demonstrate the significant improvement that an advanced
charging system can bring to the reliability and sustainability of lead-acid batteries in various
applications. By prolonging the lifespan of existing batteries, reducing the need for battery
replacements, and minimizing environmental impact, the developed charging system has the
potential to make a notable impact on the energy storage industry.
2 METHODOLOGY
2.1 BACKGROUND REVIEW ON LEAD-ACID BATTERIES
Lead-acid batteries have been used for over a century due to their low cost, high energy density,
and reliability. They are commonly used in various applications, including vehicles,
uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and renewable energy systems. Lead-acid batteries consist
of lead and lead dioxide as the active materials, with sulfuric acid as the electrolyte.
During the charging process, lead sulfate on the electrodes is converted back to lead and lead
dioxide, storing energy in the battery. On the other hand, during discharge, the lead and lead
dioxide react with sulfuric acid, producing lead sulfate and releasing energy. These batteries have
a long service life when properly maintained.
However, lead-acid batteries have certain limitations. They are heavy and have a lower energy
density compared to other battery technologies such as lithium-ion batteries. Overcharging and
undercharging can damage the batteries, reducing their capacity and service life. Temperature also
affects their performance, as high temperatures accelerate aging and decrease lifespan, while low
temperatures reduce capacity.
To address these limitations, researchers have proposed various charging algorithms and
techniques. One common approach is the three-stage charging algorithm, which includes bulk
charging, absorption charging, and float charging stages. Pulse charging techniques involving
high-frequency, high-amplitude current pulses can break up sulfation crystals and improve battery
capacity and lifespan.
Temperature sensors and temperature-compensated charging algorithms can optimize charging
parameters based on battery temperature. These advancements have shown improvements in lead-
acid battery performance and lifespan. However, further research is needed to optimize these
techniques and develop a comprehensive charging system that addresses all the limitations of lead-
acid batteries.
