4. Imagine you witnessed a bank robbery at your local NMB Branch, and you think there is
a need to inform your friend called Tetele of the incident.
i. Write a letter to your friend informing him/her of the bank robbery. Your name is
Sanduku Janja.
ii. What type of varirty has been used in the letter?
iii. Write down eight characteristic features of the type of language stated in (ii)
above.

5. Read careful the following extracts, A and B, and then answer the questions that follow.

Extract A
“I, Mariam take thee Musa to be my wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day
forward, for better for worse, for richer for poor, in sickness and health, to love, cherish,
and obey, till death do us part, according to God’s holy ordinance, and there do I give
thee my troth”

Extract B
 In traditional system, the mean erythrocyte hemoglobin concentration was called “mean
corpuscular hemoglobin concentration” abbreviated to MCHC and was expressed as a
percentage. It was calculated by dividing the hemoglobin concentration of the blood in
grams per 100ml by the packed cell volume as a percentage and multiplying by 100.
Example: hemoglobin concentration 15.0g/100ml; packed cell volume, 43%; mean
corpuscular haemoglobin concentration = (15/43).

QUESTIONS:
i. With two reasons, say to what province each of them belongs.
ii. Give five stylistic features of the language used to each extract above. Provide
examples from the extracts.

PART 2.
1. (a). As a principal speaker prepare a debate speech in support of a motion that states
“Compulsory military service after form 6 is very useful” some points raised
are like it prepares youth to help in national defence, it instills self-confidence and
discipline, it brings about respect for everybody as it irons out arrogance among
the educated youth, it enables young men and women to learn trades which may
might not have a chance to learn otherwise and it helps to alleviate the problem of
unemployment.

(b) Show how any five cohesive devices used in your speech have facilitated a logical
flow of your ideas.

3. Imagine you witnessed a certain official building burning and even took some initiatives

a) Write one page dialogue between you and your friend who is just interested to
know what happened. You are Atata and your friend is Atoto.
b) Write a concise report to appear in the “DAILY NEWS” or “SUNDAY NEWS”
describing the incident.
c) With clear examples, identify five categories of status.

i. Many students have a tendency of trespassing the school grounds. Make a public
notice to advise them to refrain from the habit.
ii. You noticed an intruder at a party you are hosting. Suggest two ways you would
tell him to go out without making him feels offended or embarrassed.

5. Imagine you saw a fastmoving car knock down a child who was standing near the road.
Due to whatever reason, you helped rush the child to the nearest hospital, still
remembering the car’s registration number. Eventually through your help the driver is
caught, arrested and charged accordingly.
a) As a witness to the case, write a short account of the incident to the court
magistrate.
b) Write a one (1) page dialogue between you and your intimate friend on the state
of the affected child from just before the accident to the moment you left the
hospital. Incidentally, the child died of internal haemorrhage.

1. (a) Read the following extract carefully and answer the questions.
Toxic substance found in water polluted by human activity frequently include
synthetic compounds such as solvents (carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, benzene)
and insecticides, the best known of which is dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, or
DDT.

i. Say to which province this extract belongs.

ii. Explain with three examples the stylistic features used in this extract.
iii. Give three reasons for using these features.

(b) Carefully study each of the text given below and say what kind of writing each
one is. Identify two stylistic feature for each kind.
i. The fate of the Indian tiger has not been caused by guns alone. In nature
all forms of life depend on each other. the soil provides food for plants.
Plants provide food for animals like deer. And deer provide food for
hunter animals like tiger……

ii. He was a man, stooping narrow-shouldered, clay-faced creature. His age

might have been anything between 50 and 70. His nightcap was of funnel,
and so was the nightgown that he wore instead of coat and waistcoat, over
his ragged shirt. He was long unshaved….
iii. The morning was grey and cold as I came downstairs for breakfast that
last day of term and I shivered a little as I pulled on my sweater before
sitting down to breakfast….
 iv. A man of words and not of deeds. It’s like a garden full of weeds and
when the weeds begin to grow it’s like a garden full of snow…

2. (a) Human communication is two-way process.

This means the sender responds to some internal stimulus, he encodes the
message in a particular code and sends it through a channel. The receiver decodes
the message, responds and sends feedback.

EXTRACT A
What would you think if you saw a policeman trying to hold a car back? He can’t do it
because he’s no match for it. Paul said, “Be stronger in the Lord and in the power of his
might.” The policeman doesn’t use his own strength. He’s strong in the authority that
given to him. You can step right out there before the devil, hold up your hand and tell
him not to come any farther. Use your authority.

EXTRACT B
Without attached meaning speech sounds are only grunts and groans or meaningless
strings of words. The relationship all the linguistic forms, individual sounds, meaningful
units, and the combination of these units is specified by the rules of language. Language
can be defined as socially shared code or conventional system for presenting concepts
through the use of arbitrary symbols and rule governed combinations of those symbols.

3. Read the following text and answer the questions that follow after it:

It has been noted with concern that the stock of books in the library has been declining
alarmingly. Students are asked to remind themselves of the rules for the borrowing and
