Prior to beginning work on this assignment, complete the following:

 Review the Five Pillars of Informatics Download Five Pillars of

Informaticsguide, specifically the sections the selection, implementation,
and sustained support of health information technology platforms in the
health industry.
 Read the following articles:

In your review of the Five Pillars of Informatics, reflect on the various types of
informatics solutions such as clinical provider order entry (CPOE)
implementations, implementations of patient portals, or upgrades of patient
management systems addressed as individual project initiatives in HIA601;
and compare the program in your team’s chosen IDN. As you examine each
of the projects in your team’s program, analyze how these projects will be
implemented in tandem to best address the stated goals of the IDN. Consider
the following: Are the systems being implemented in such a way that
measurable and sustainable cost reductions can be gained?

Introduction
By Day 1 of Week 1, you will be assigned groups by your instructor.
Throughout the course, you will work with this group to create a Group
Program Management Plan, which you will turn in as your final project in
Week 6.
For this week’s assignment, each group will select an IDN from the IDN
scenarios below. Your group will take on the role of the Program
Management Office Director (PMOD). In this role, your group will create a
program management plan that will encompass several projects. These
projects are listed in each IDN scenario as “Informatics Implementation
Projects.” You and each member of your team will choose one Informatics
Implementation Project, for which you will take on the role of Project
Manager.

You should note that each Informatics Implementation Project reflects a

significant investment for the organization. It’s the job of the PMOD (your
group) to determine how each project and the program overall creates
tangible benefits for the organization while controlling technology costs.
Remember that while each project stands on its own as a discrete
informatics solution being implemented in the organization, the challenge of
the group is to assess the interrelationships and interdependencies between
these projects as they form an informatics program.
Ensure you download the Five Pillars of Health Informatics Download Five

the IDN. To do this, consider the following questions:

 Which of the Informatics Pillars are most clearly reflected in your groups
program?
 Think about the composition of the IDN and the stated goals and
objectives in the scenario: How will the implementation of multiple

 This integrated delivery network is comprised of five hospitals and 20

physician practices, five long-term care facilities, two urgent service
medical malls, and an insurance plan that covers 3 million covered lives in
the San Francisco area. Strategic imperatives for this IDN include 10%
operational cost reductions that are sustainable across business units and
the expansion of market share through virtualization strategies to
compete with stand-alone and retail urgent care competitors in the
region.
 Informatics Implementation Projects: Your individual project takes the
form of an initiative. Choose one from the list of informatics
implementation initiatives below:
o Multihospital Electronic Health Record Implementation
(documentation, results, clinical provider order entry [CPOE];
and decision support systems [DSS])
o Practice Management System Clinical Implementation
o Practice Management System Billing, Registration, and
Scheduling Implementation

Option 2: Star Health Alliance:

clinics in cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, three women’s
health centers, 200 physician practices, and an insurance plan that covers
5 million covered lives across three different states in the Midwest.
Strategic imperatives for this IDN include 10% operational cost reductions
that are sustainable across business units and the realization of a 20%
improvement in physician practice-based clinical quality metrics specific
to wellness activities related to cancer prevention, diabetes risk
management, and women’s health.
 Informatics Implementation Projects: The informatics implementation
initiatives included in the Program Management Office (PMO) Informatics
Program include the following:
o Practice Management System Clinical Implementation
o Practice Management System Billing, Registration, and
Scheduling Implementation

40 senior living communities including five skilled nursing facilities (SNFs),
a home health agency, and two insurance plans that cover 5 million
covered lives in the Florida–Atlantic costal area. Strategic imperatives for
this IDN include 15% operational cost reductions that are sustainable
across business units and improved population health initiatives involving
comorbid populations of health plan members including persons with
congestive heart failure (CHF) and diabetes and related comorbidities.

various informatics projects, but also the integration of these projects into the overall health

informatics system. The group must be able to identify and prioritize the various informatics

projects in order to develop a comprehensive and effective program. Additionally, the group

must be able to identify and balance the competing interests of the stakeholders, both internal

and external, in order to ensure that the program meets the needs of the organization. Also, the

Alliance must ensure that their program is secure, with the appropriate access and data

Star Health Alliance (SHA) is an integrated delivery network that has a mission to

improve the health of the communities it serves through the use of innovative informatics

solutions. As the Program Management Office Director, our group has identified several

potential technical, financial, and operational risks that could negatively impact our proposed

informatics program for SHA. Technically, there is a risk that the proposed informatics

solutions are not adequately supported by current infrastructure or IT personnel and may not

be able to meet the expected performance standards. Additionally, there is a risk that the

proposed solutions may not be properly integrated with existing systems, leading to data and

system incompatibilities. Financially, there is a risk that the implementation costs of the

proposed informatics solutions may exceed the budget allotted and that the ROI of the

program may not be as high as expected. Furthermore, there is a risk that the proposed

solutions will not generate sufficient cost savings or revenue generation to offset the

implementation and operational costs. Operationally, there is a risk that the proposed

informatics solutions may be too complex for staff to use and may require additional training.

Additionally, there is a risk that the proposed solutions may not be well accepted by

the organization and may lead to resistance from users. Also, there is a risk that the program

may not be successfully implemented due to inadequate planning, communication, and

coordination between the different stakeholders. Finally, there is a risk that the program may

not deliver the desired outcomes due to a lack of knowledge, skills, and experience of the

personnel involved in the implementation and ongoing management of the program.
