Carpobrotus Edulis Extraction Results

The hydro-ethanolic extraction of Carpobrotus edulis yielded 8.7% with 61.10g of extract obtained from 700g of the plant material. The extracted powder exhibited characteristics such as solid shiny crystals, dark brown color, and distinctive aroma, and was soluble in water. The broth dilution method determined the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extract against Staphylococcus pyrogenes, with results indicating varying concentrations of the extract's effectiveness after incubation.

RESULTS

4.1Hydro- Ethanolic Extraction of Carpobrotus Edulis

The extraction was successfully carried out and the percentage yield of Carpobrotus edulis
was calculated as the amount of powder extract obtained (61.10g) after the extraction divided
by the amount of Carpobrotus edulis grinded initially ( 700g) multiplied by 100 as:

61.10 g 100
Percentage yield of Capobrotus edulis = × = 8.7%
700 g 1

4.2. Broth Dilution Method for MIC

The MIC is the lowest concentration of the Carpobrotus edulis extract that inhibits the visible
growth of Staphylococcus pyrogenes. This would be observed as the petri dish with the
lowest concentration of the extract where no visible bacterial growth is present after
incubation.
The positive control tube containing the Nutrient broth culture media containing
Staphylococcus pyrogenes and ciprofloxacin should not show bacterial growth, the test
should be clear to show the effectiveness of the antibiotic against the bacteria.
The negative control dish containing only the broth with bacteria showed turbidity as it
allowed bacteria to grow. The dilution series should show a gradual decrease in the
concentration of the Carpobrotus edulis extract for different petri dishes, allowing for a range
of concentrations to determine the MIC.
To note is that the initial concentration of extract without bacteria was 600 mg/ml put in test
tube 1 but upon adding the 1 ml of bacteria the concentration was then half-diluted to 300
mg/ml , since all the test tubes were added 1 ml of bacteria it means their concentrations
decreased by half from the initial concentrations.
