FLOOD RISK ANALYSIS
MODULE 3, ASSIGNMENT
This assignment accompanies the Flood Risk Analysis module and is structured
accordingly. It intends to illustrate the steps to be taken in flood risk analysis from
hazard analysis over vulnerability analysis to the final risk analysis. It takes the
fictitious city of Xa as an example, where the flood risk analysis leads to a final
decision on allocating resources for flood risk management and mitigation. Like
the presentations, the exercise is divided into three parts.
PART 1 - Flood Hazard Analysis
Please explain the procedures of how a flood hazard map is derived by
answering the following questions.
1. What kind of data must be collected?
2. Name the two options of deriving estimates of flood magnitude? What
information is contained in a discharge hydrograph of a flood event and
how is it constructed?
3. Name the two elements for construction of synthetic flood scenarios
4. Name the method of deriving inundation scenarios/hazard maps from the
synthetic flood events and explain which approach you might use
5. Please explain at least 3 parameters that can be shown in a flood hazard
map
Part 2 - Flood Vulnerability Analysis
Please look at the figures below for the elements of the imaginary city of Xa, and
explain the procedures of a flood vulnerability analysis by addressing the
following components:
1. Identify at least 4 elements at risk for Xa.
Module 3: Flood Risk Analysis

2. Exposure Analysis: Explain how you would map elements at risk.
3. Name the 4 steps involved in developing a loss model.
Module 3: Flood Risk Analysis

Part 3 - Flood Risk Analysis
Look at the flood risk maps showing inundation extent and damages for a 20, 100,
and 500-year flood. These maps show the land-use and critical infrastructure
effected in the imaginary city of Xa. Referring to the slides please answer the
following questions:
1. Please explain how a flood risk map is created.
2. Name the two different ways of presenting risk maps.
3. Please explain how you would perform a risk appraisal (i.e., prioritize
objects at risk) for each of the three inundation scenarios (i.e., 20, 100,
and 500 year event) based on the following three criteria.
4. Identify the most important risks in the 100 year event.
5. Name and explain two criteria for flood mitigation planning.
