🔹 What are Determiners?
Determiners are words placed before nouns to determine or limit their meaning. They tell us
which, whose, how much, how many etc. about the noun.
They are always followed by a noun (never used alone).
✅ Types of Determiners
1. Articles
• a, an, the
• A – before consonant sounds (a book, a boy)
• An – before vowel sounds (an apple, an honest man)
• The – for specific nouns, unique things, rivers, mountains, newspapers etc.
2. Demonstratives
• this, that, these, those
• This book, That pen, These boys, Those houses
3. Possessives
• my, your, his, her, its, our, their
• Show ownership: my school, her dress
4. Quantifiers
• some, any, few, little, many, much, several, all, enough, both, half, each, every
• Some milk, Few students, Much noise, All girls
5. Numbers (Cardinals & Ordinals)
• Cardinals → one, two, three… (two apples)
• Ordinals → first, second, last, next… (the first prize)
6. Distributives
• each, every, either, neither
• Each boy was present, Neither answer is correct
7. Interrogatives
• which, what, whose
• Which book do you want?
• Whose bag is this?
8. Definites / Indefinites
• Definite → the, this, my, all, both, each (specific)
• Indefinite → a, an, some, any, few, many (unspecific)
9. Relative Determiners
• whose, which, whatever
• I met a man whose car was stolen.
⚖️ Rules to Remember
1. Articles not used before proper nouns (unless used in a special sense: the Gita, the
Ramayana).
2. Some is used in affirmative, any in negatives/questions.
o I have some money.
o I don’t have any money.
3. Much → uncountable, Many → countable.
o much sugar, many boys.
4. Little vs A little:
o Little hope = almost none.
o A little hope = some hope.
5. Few vs A few:
o Few friends = hardly any.
o A few friends = some friends.
