Activity: Relay of Externalities
1. Number of Players
● 2 Groups (4 people each)
2. Objective
● Build the tallest and stable cup tower (4-layer cup tower) while running
with a belt of trash, cleaning up leftover trash, and picking up cups scattered
on the floor — all within a time limit.
● Each player contributes one layer per run by collecting cups from the floor
and stacking them carefully.
● Minimize penalties from leftover trash to achieve the best total team time.
3. Materials Needed
● Belts or sashes with trash items (wrappers, small papers, plastics)
● Cups (enough for tower, scattered on the floor)
● Chairs: Start Line (Chair A), Bank Chair (Chair B), Final Chair for Tower (Chair
C)
● Timer/stopwatch
Setup
1. Arrange chairs: Start → Bank → Final Tower Chair.
2. Scatter cups randomly around the final chair.
3. Assign time per player (40 seconds).
4. Explain rules, tower goal, and penalties.
5. Game Flow & Player Actions
5.1 First Player (Initial Run)
1. Wear a belt loaded with trash items
2. Run from Start → Bank → Final Chair. Trash may fall along the way.
3. At Final Chair:
○ Pick up cups one by one from the floor.
○ Place the first layer (base) of cups carefully to form a stable layer.
5.2 Subsequent Players (Relay Turns)
1. Run the course with a belt of trash.
2. Clean up any leftover trash from previous players.
3. Pick up cups left on the floor, one by one, and build the next layer of the
tower.
4. Repeat until the tower reaches 4 layers.
5. Each player has a time limit per turn (40 seconds).
6. Rules & Twists
1. Cup Handling:
○ Cups must be picked one at a time.
○ Dropped cups go back to the floor to be picked again.
2. Trash Handling:
○ Trash dropped during the run stays on the floor and picked up by the
next player.
○ Each piece of trash on the floor will add 2 seconds to your final time.
3. Tower Stability:
○ The tower must remain stable after each layer.
○ If a layer falls, that player must rebuild it within their time limit.
4. Fun Twists:
○ Pick up and build cups while swaying their hips.
○ After a player adds each new cup to the tower, they must clap their
hands once before they can pick up the next cup.
7. Consequences
● The winning team shall choose a member from the losing team’s groups to
correlate the activity to the report.
● Prize: 1 Pack of Chocolate Chip Cookies per winning player.
