Name: Roll Number:
------------------------- --------------- ------------------------- --------------
Subject: IGCSE PHYSICS Grade: 10th
INSTRUCTIONS:
• Answer all questions.
• Write your answer to each question in the space provided.
Problem 1:
A runner completes a 400 m race in 50 s.
Calculate her average speed in m/s.
Problem 2:
A car travels a distance of 180 km in 3 hours.
Calculate the average speed of the car in km/h.
Problem 3:
A cyclist travels a distance of 2.4 km in 10 minutes.
Calculate the average speed of the cyclist in m/s.
Problem 4:
A family drives to the beach. The journey has two parts:
• For the first 2 hours, they travel at an average speed of 60 km/h.
• They then stop for 30 minutes at a service station.
• For the final 1.5 hours of the trip, they travel at an average speed of 50 km/h.
(a) Calculate the total distance of the journey to the beach.
(b) Calculate the total time taken for the entire journey.
(c) Calculate the average speed for the entire journey.
Problem 5:
A bird flies 1500 m from a tree to a bird feeder at an average speed of 10 m/s. It
then immediately flies back to the tree at an average speed of 15 m/s.
(a) Calculate the time taken for the bird to fly to the feeder.
(b) Calculate the time taken for the return journey.
(c) Calculate the average speed for the entire round trip. (Note: The answer is not
12.5 m/s).
Problem 6
In a 1500 m relay race, two runners, Anna and Ben, run consecutive legs.
• Anna runs the first 600 m of the race.
• Ben runs the final 900 m of the race.
The team completes the entire 1500 m race in a total time of 3 minutes and 40
seconds. Anna's average speed during her leg was 6.5 m/s.
(a) Calculate the time it took Anna to complete her 600 m leg.
(b) Calculate the time Ben had to complete his 900 m leg.
(c) Calculate Ben's average speed during his leg of the race.
Problem 7
A boat travels 10 km upstream along a river at a constant speed of 8 km/h. It then
returns the same 10 km downstream at a constant speed of 12 km/h.
(a) Calculate the total distance the boat travelled.
(b) Calculate the total time taken for the entire journey.
(c) Calculate the average speed of the boat for the entire journey. (Be careful: it is
not 10 km/h).
Problem 8
A sales representative drives from City A to City C, passing through City B.
• The first part of the journey, from A to B, takes 1.5 hours at an average speed
of 80 km/h.
• The second part of the journey, from B to C, is completed at an average speed
of 110 km/h.
The average speed for the entire journey from A to C was 90 km/h.
(a) Calculate the distance between City A and City B.
(b) Let the time taken for the second part of the journey (B to C) be t. Write an
expression for the distance from B to C in terms of t.
(c) By setting up an equation for the total average speed, calculate the time t taken
for the second part of the journey.
(d) Calculate the total distance from City A to City C.
