The Role of Medical Technologists in the Philippine Setting: An Interview with RMT Angelica

Garcia

Introduction

Medical Technologists (RMTs) are a critical yet sometimes undervalued group of workers in the

Philippine healthcare system. They are the experts behind diagnostic test results that inform

physicians' treatment and decision-making. To better understand the realities of this profession, I

conducted an interview with Registered Medical Technologist Angelica Garcia, who has spent

seven years working both in private and government health care laboratories. Her answers shed

light on the critical responsibilities, changing challenges, and significant contributions of

MedTechs in the country.

Body

When prompted for a description of her typical day as a Medical Technologist, Ms. Garcia said

she typically starts by preparing laboratory equipment, quality controls, and receiving patient

specimens. Most of her time is spent conducting diagnostic tests for hematology, chemistry,

microbiology, and immunology. She reiterated that timeliness and accuracy are very important

because the results have direct implications for patient care. She also emphasized that in addition

to technical capabilities, responsibility and patience are needed since mistakes can have drastic

implications.

On what the most significant roles of MedTechs are in augmenting the Philippine healthcare

system, Ms. Garcia declared that MedTechs are the 'backbone of diagnostics.' Doctors rely on

laboratory results for about 70% of medical decisions, so their role is crucial. She also mentioned

their role in disease surveillance, blood banking, and public health campaigns, particularly in

rural settings where access to laboratory facilities is low.

When speaking of more contemporary public health issues like the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms.

Garcia looked back on how the work of MedTechs considerably expanded. Aside from their

usual laboratory operations, most MedTechs were redeployed to molecular labs to perform RT-

PCR testing. She said the pandemic highlighted the value and vulnerability of the profession

because MedTechs braved extended working hours, occupational risks, and manpower shortages.

In spite of all this, they stayed strong as frontliners against the pandemic.

On the special obligations between government and private laboratories, Ms. Garcia clarified that

government laboratories are usually beset by large caseloads, limited resources, and

understaffing. Nevertheless, they deliver essential services to communities that cannot afford

private healthcare. Private laboratories, on the other hand, can provide superior equipment and

pay but are just as demanding in performance and patient expectation. She emphasized that at

whatever workplace, professionalism and integrity should always be the guiding principles for

MedTechs.

Lastly, when queried for words of advice for students, Ms. Garcia exhorted future Medical

Technologists to enter the profession with commitment and empathy. She encouraged them to

study hard, hone their technical proficiency, and cherish accuracy in their work. Above all,

however, she reminded students that being a MedTech is not just working in a laboratory but

more importantly, serving the people of the Philippines by providing quality health care delivery.

Conclusion

RMT Angelica Garcia's interview uncovered the vital role of Medical Technologists in the

Philippine healthcare system. From helping to provide correct diagnoses to assisting public

health programs, MedTechs such as herself are a reflection of the spirit of service and

professionalism. Challenges accompanying the job, especially during public health emergencies,
do not undermine the role's importance to the country's healthcare system. As the next generation

of MedTech students get ready to enter the profession, they may look up to career persons such

as Ms. Garcia who prove that precision, empathy, and commitment are at the core of being a

Medical Technologist in the Philippines.
