ABSTRACT
This is a report carried out on the rampant increase of examination malpractice among first year students in
Makerere University. This basically a survey conducted from 20rd-30thMarch 2022 by a few of my colleagues in the
teaching department.
It was discovered that students have increasingly lost the appetite for studying but rather want to pass their exams
by all means. Through interviewing and interacting with some the new students, my colleagues were able to come
up with different ways and reasons as to why many students cheat examination. We also noticed that most of the
stake holders are not doing enough to find solutions this problem because some of them are beneficiaries of this
act.
INTRODUCTION
In the past examination malpractice was not so common partly because most students adequately prepared for
examinations and were not absorbed by social media which is the major cause of this malpractice today.
Many secondary schools today have resorted to the vice of cheating for their students national exams due to the
stiff competition among schools more so the private schools who compete for students. This has changed the
mindsets of many scholars as they look at malpractice as something normal. Our survey states that 90% of the
culprits are former students of schools that are branded “cheats” in National Examinations
Our findings can be stated below
I. Smuggling of microchips into the examination hall to be used as a guided during an exam. This was a big
problem more so in the previous tests
II. Leaking of examinations question paper is also a common practice of examination malpractice very
common among students doing social works and bachelor of business administration
III. Copying from colleagues during an examination and this is the commonest method used by students and
it is the most commonly used method by all students in this institution
IV. Use of textbooks in the examination
V. Sorting of courses by students is another of indulging in examination malpractice
VI. Use mobile phones during an examination. This very common especially during online exams and where
the hall is too big to be supervised by only one invigilator
CONCLUSION
Examination malpractice is no doubt a big concern for us and we must find solutions to it with immediate effect
RECOMMENDATION
However much examinations is a bad act, solutions can be solutions can be found to curb it some of which are
listed below
i. Intensifying supervision of students during an examination and this can be done through recruiting more
staff.
ii. Increasing salaries of the lecturers and giving the allowances. This can strengthen them economically
hence desist from acts of bribery
iii. Giving students adequate time to prepare themselves for an examination
iv. Implementing strong rules and regulations concerning malpractice such as an automatic expulsion of
those caught in the act
v. Provision of interviews to new entrants. This can enable us select only those candidates who passed on
merit hence avoiding such acts
vi. Thorough checking of students as they enter any examination room. This will minimize smuggling of
microchips into the hall
vii. Finally discussion groups can be formed to boost confidence among students and this help reduce acts of
malpractice
