DYNAMICS OF RIGID

BODIES
MODULE 1
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

• At the end of this module, students will be able to:

• Define dynamics
• Identify and differentiate kinematics and kinetics
DEFINITION OF TERMS
• ENGINEERING MECHANICS
• Is a branch of the physical sciences that is concerned with the state of rest or motion of bodies
subjected to the action of forces.
Fundamental Areas of Engineering Mechanics
1. Statics
- Is concerned with the equivalent of a body that is either at rest or moves with constant velocity.
- It is a study on effects of external forces on rigid bodies
2. Dynamics
- Study of external effects of forces in a moving body
3. Strength of Materials
- Deals with relationship between loads and their internal effects on a body.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
• DYNAMICS
• Is the branch of mechanics which deals with the study of bodies in motion

TWO BRANCHES OF DYNAMICS

1. KINEMATICS
- Geometry of motion. The term is used to define the motion of a particle of a body without
consideration of the forces causing motion. It is usually the treatment of the relation between
displacement, velocity, and acceleration.
2. KINETICS
- Is the branch of mechanics and relates the force acting on a body to its mass and acceleration.
RECTILINEAR KINEMATICS: CONTINUOUS MOTION
(POSITION, DISPLACEMENT,VELOCITY AND ACCELERATION)
• At the end of this module, students will be able to:
• Define position, displacement, velocity and acceleration
• Solve fundamental problems involving velocity and acceleration

RECTILINEAR KINEMATICS

• The kinematics of a particle is characterized by specifying, at any given instant, the

particle’s position, velocity and acceleration.

• POSITION
• The position of point P at any time t is expressed in terms of its distance s from a fixed origin
O on the x axis. This distance x is positive or negative according to the usual sign convention.
RECTILINEAR KINEMATICS

• DISPLACEMENT
- The displacement of a particle is defined as the change in
its position. The displacement of a particle is also a vector
quantity, and it should be distinguished from the distance
the particle travels.
RECTILINEAR KINEMATICS

• VELOCITY
- It is defined as the change in displacement per unit
time.
- Speed is defined as the change in distance per unit
of time.
RECTILINEAR KINEMATICS

• ACCELERATION
- It is defined as the change in
velocity per unit of time.

• ACCELERATION
- It is defined as the change in velocity per unit of time.
ASSESSMENT
UPLOAD YOUR SOLUTION IN THE GOOGLE CLASSROOM

• 1. A car travels a distance of 350 miles in 5.0 hours. Find the average speed.
• 2.A car’s speed changes from 15 m/s to 25 m/s in 5.0 s along a straight road. Find the
acceleration of the car during this period.
• 3.A runner makes one lap around a 200-m track in a time of 25 sec. What were the
runner’s average speed and average velocity?
• 4.A constant force changes the speed of a car from 8 m/s to 20 m/s in 4s. What is
average acceleration?
