UNIT - I
1. a) A multi-tone modulating signal has the following time-domain form CO1 (08)
m(t)=Am1cos(2πfm1t) + Am2cos(2πfm2t) + Am3cos(2πfm3t)
where Am1> Am2> Am3 and fm3> fm2>fm1
i) Give the time-domain expression.
ii) Draw the spectrum of the AM wave. Also find the transmission

b) With neat diagram, explain the demodulation of AM wave using envelope CO1 (06)
detector.
c) Derive the expression for AM wave in both time-domain and frequency- CO1 (06)
domain representation.

2. a) With relevant mathematical analysis, explain the generation of AM wave CO1 (07)
using switching modulator. Sketch the spectrum before and after the
filtering process.
b) Explain the generation of DSBSC using ring modulator. CO1 (06)
c) Explain the operation of coherent detection of DSB-SC modulating wave. CO1 (07)

UNIT - II
3. a) Describe with necessary equations and block diagram the generation of CO2 (06)
narrowband FM.
b) Design Armstrong FM generator for the generation of WBFM signal CO2 (08)
∆f= 75KHz, using the narrowband carrier as 100KHz and second carrier as
9.5MHz. Find the suitable multiplying factors. Assume the message signal
to be defined in the range: 100Hz to 15KHz.
c) Explain the need for Pre-emphasis and De-emphasis. With neat circuit CO2 (06)
diagrams and plots explain the same.

4. a) Prove that FM signal has infinite bandwidth using mathematical equations. CO2 (10)
b) The equation for a FM wave is s(t)=10cos[5.7x108t 5sin(12x 103) t]. CO2 (10)
Calculate i) carrier frequency ii) modulation frequency iii) modulation
index iv) frequency deviation v) power dissipated in a 100Ω resistor load.

UNIT - III
5. a) Derive an expression for overall noise figure of an amplifier in a two port. CO3 (08)
cascaded network.
b) Show that AM receiver using a diode detector has a Figure of Merit, which CO3 (08)
can be represented in terms of m 2=(kaAm)2 .
c) A mixer stage has a noise figure of 30 dB and this is preceded by an CO3 (04)
amplifier that has a noise figure of 10 dB and an available power gain of
35 dB. Calculate overall noise figure as referred to the input.

6. a) Find the overall noise figure of the system shown in Fig.6(a) CO3 (08)

Fig.6(a)
b) Show that the figure of merit of DSBSC system is unity. CO3 (08)
c) Define shot noise and thermal noise. CO3 (04)

UNIT- IV
7. a) State sampling theorem for low pass signals. Prove sampling theorem for CO4 (08)
the signal g(t) = cos(2π80t) with necessary spectral diagrams and
expressions.
b) Twenty-four voice signals are sampled uniformly and then time division CO4 (06)
multiplexed. The sampling operation uses flat top samples with
2 microsecond duration. The multiplexing operation includes provision for
synchronization by adding an extra pulse of sufficient amplitude and
2 micro second duration. The highest frequency component of each voice
signal is 3.5 KHz. Calculate the spacing between successive pulses of the
multiplexed signal, assuming sampling rate is 7 KHz.
c) With neat block diagram explain signal processing operations involved in CO4 (06)
digital communication.

8. a) Prove that the sampled signal must be passed through the low pass filter CO4 (08)
for the reconstruction of the analog signal.
b) Let g(t)=Cos(2∏10t), is flat top sampled at a rate of 100 samples per CO4 (08)
second, with a pulse duration is equal to 2 milli seconds. Then find the
expressions and draw the Fourier transform of the sampled signal
between -250Hz to 250Hz. Assume amplitude of the pulse is A=5V.
c) Explain aliasing error with example. CO4 (04)

(iii) NRZ-bipolar (iv) Manchester coding.

10. a) With appropriate block diagram and equations explain the operation of a CO5 (08)

b) A 10KHz sinusoidal signal with amplitude levels of±1volts is to be sampled CO5 (04)
and quantized. How many bits are required to ensure a SNR of 45 dB?
What is the bit rate of the digitized signal if the sampling rate is chosen as
twice the Nyquist rate.
c) Analyze the Power Spectra of Manchester Format and comment on the CO5 (08)
results.
