Lesson Objectives:

Understand the formation of the Simple Past (regular


and irregular verbs)
Learn the use of the verb "to be" in the past
(was/were)
Practice affirmative, negative, and interrogative
sentence structures
Recognize time expressions used with the past
WHAT IS THE SIMPLE PAST?
The Simple Past tense is used to describe
actions that started and ended in the past, at a
specific time.

Ex:
I visited my grandmother last Sunday.
I watched a movie yesterday.
She went to the park last weekend.
They ate dinner two hours ago.
HOW TO FORM THE SIMPLE
PAST WITH REGULAR VERBS
Basic spelling rules:

1. If the verb ends in -e, just add -d

like → liked
live → lived
2. If it ends in consonant + y, change y to -ied

study → studied
carry → carried
3. If it ends in vowel + y, just add -ed

play → played

4. If it's a short verb (CVC: consonant-vowel-


consonant), double the final consonant

stop → stopped
plan → planned
Examples:

I watched a movie last night.


She played soccer yesterday.
We studied for the test.
IRREGULAR VERBS IN THE
SIMPLE PAST
Irregular verbs have special forms
in the past. They do not follow the
regular -ed rule and must be
memorized.
SENTENCE STRUCTURE IN THE
SIMPLE PAST
Write a sentence using the word 'February':
1. Affirmative:
[Subject + verb in the past]
She watched TV.
We went to the museum.
2. Negative:
[Subject + didn’t + base form of the verb]
She didn’t watch TV.
We didn’t go to the museum.
3. Interrogative:
[Did + subject + base form of the verb?]
Did she watch TV?
Did you go to the museum?

THE VERB TO BE IN THE PAST

The verb "to be" has its own past forms:

Subject Past form


- I, he, she, it - was
- you, we, they - were
Affirmative:
I was at home.
They were tired.
Negative:
I wasn’t at home.
They weren’t tired.
Interrogative:
Was she happy?
Were you at the
party?
TIME EXPRESSIONS IN THE
SIMPLE PAST
1. YESTERDAY
I studied English yesterday.
She called me yesterday afternoon.

2. LAST + [time word]


He went to the beach last weekend.
They visited London last summer.
We had a party last night.
I was very busy last week.
She got a new job last month.
He graduated last year.
3. AGO*
I met her two days ago.
They moved here a year ago.
We saw that movie a week ago.
He called me an hour ago.

4. WHEN I WAS...
I loved cartoons when I was a child.
She had long hair when she was younger.
We lived in Canada when I was in college.
5. IN + [PAST YEAR OR PERIOD]
I traveled to Italy in 2022.
They got married in 2010.
My grandfather was born in 1945.
We visited the museum in July.
FINAL SUMMARY:

Simple Past = completed actions in the past


Regular verbs → add -ed
Irregular verbs → memorize the past form
Negative and questions → use did/didn’t + base verb
Verb "to be" → use was/were
Time expressions like yesterday, last week, ago...
