Introduction:
Fig. 1 shows the systematic design of the experimental setup, which evaluates engine
output and emissions, along with the shapes of the combustion chambers. There is a
dynamometer, equipment for measuring cylinder pressure and emissions, a fuel
measuring system, two ECUs to control the fuel systems, and computers to control
and program the fuel systems in the system.
The engine was loaded with an air-cooled ABB brand dynamometer, which can
operate actively in four different regions.
Engine Specification:
The engine used for the experiment is a compression ignition type. The standard fuel
used here is diesel. Engine type of this machine is single – cylinder 4 stroke water
cooled diesel engine. Here direct ignition method is used in fuel ignition system. The
switch is operated in two half cycles where, in the first half turn, it activates the
Electrical Control Unit (ECU), and the other half turn, results in the start of engine by
electric starter, results cranking of engine. As the engine starts, it is allowed to
establish a steady state. This engine is analyzed with the help of a software “IC
Enginesoft” A lab view based software This software collects all the analyzed data
and stores in a NI USB 6210 data logger. Another software “PE3” is also used which
controls and operate the ECU. With the help of this software, we can change various
parameters of an engine, eg. Compression ignition, fuel injection timing etc. this
software is applicable in all type of fuel. As it has different modes of application for
different fuels, e.g. diesel, biodiesel, ethanol etc.
Engine performance measurement:
Performance measurement is an important component of engine experiments,
requiring a high degree of precision and accuracy. To rechieve this, we predominantly
depend on specialized software tools. One of the such tool is “IC Enginesoft’’. IC
Enginesoft is designed to automatically calculate the various points and store them in
a NI USB 6210 device. This stored data can then be transferred to a computer for
detailed analysis.
The software is able to analyze the multiple aspects and parameters related to engine
performance. These includes air and fuel flow rates, air flow ratio, brake power, mean
effective pressure, and energy balance. For correct measurements, IC Engine
software is initially requires some pre-fed data corresponding to specific load
conditions, speed, and throttle positions.
the software is manually configured for the specific type of fuel being used. This
configuration involves inputting values such as the fuel's density, calorific value, and
the number of cycles the engine undergoes.
IC Engine software is useful for representing a detailed performance analysis. The
key performances are
1. Brake Power:
2. Indicative Power:
3. Brake Specific Fuel Consumption:
4. Volumetric Efficiency:
5. Stoichiometric Air-Fuel Ratio
Braking system:
As the engine crankshaft is coupled with an eddy current dynamometer . The load on
the engine is varied manually with the help of knob and potentiometer which are
connected to the eddy current dynamometer which is further connected to a digital
display unit, which indicates the applied load (kg) on the engine. As the knob varied
the potential generated across the potentiometer also varied due which the applied
load on the dynamometer changes. This change is sensed by the load cell of strain
gauge type (Sensotronics Sanmar Ltd., Model 60001, Type S beam, Universal,
Capacity 0-50kg). Connected to a digital display load indicator to display the
magnitude of the load.
Temperature measurement:
It becomes quite essential and important to measure and balance the temperature in an
engine so to get the maximum efficiency. To maintain the temperature, it needs
cooling. Hence, the setup engine is a water-cooled type in which, the cold water flows
into it through the inlet port of engine jacket, where it collects the heat, and after
circulation, it gets out through an outlet port.
A significant source of heat is the exhaust gas produced during the engine operation.
To measure this heat, an exhaust gas calorimeter is used. This device includes water
that absorbs thermal energy from the high-temperature exhaust gases passing through
it. As the water absorbs heat, its density decreases, generating it to rise within the
calorimeter. This process provides a reliable indication of heat output from the
exhaust gases.
These measurements ot temperature done by thermocouple sensors. The thermocouple
is K type and is used to measure the precise and accurate temperature of exhaust gas.
Further, all the interfaces are connected to a computer through NI USB 6210 data
logger, which allows it for automatic recording of data.
Fuel flow measurement:
Volumetric method: In this method generally we use a glass burette of known volume
with graduation in ml in which fuel is filled till the last mark. A stopwatch is used to
measure the time interval during which the engine consumes the fuel. This method
allows for accurate determination of the volume of fuel consumed. After knowing the
volume of fuel then it is multiplied by the specific gravity of [Link] calculation of
fuel consumed in liters per minute (LPM) for each throttle position (TP) and loading
condition of the engine.
Gravimetric method:The gravimetric method offers significant advantages over the
traditional volume-based measurements for deciding fuel efficiency in engines.
Unlike methods reliant on volumetric flow rates adapted for specific gravity, which
can be cumbersome and less precise, gravimetric measurement directly weighs the
fuel consumed. In this, we use differential pressure transmitters, which works on
hydrostatic head principles used for fuel consumption measurement. The liquid fuels
were supplied to the engine injection pump from the fuel tank under gravity feed. The
glass burette is filled with the fuel of known weight; the engine is now allowed to run
on a particular load. Further, the stopwatch is also started simultaneously for 30
second. Then the fuel consumption measurement is evaluated and analyzed.
Air consumption:
Measuring air consumption in internal combustion (IC) engines poses some
difficulties due to the pulsating flow which is caused by the engine's cyclic nature
and the compressibility of [Link], the normal orifice meter in a pipe is not good
enough to measure the air flow. Some modification is required for accurate
measurement and is done by using an air box with orifice plate (20mm diameter) and
a U-tube manometer with water as manometric fluid attached across the orifice
[Link] setup modifies the standard orifice meter approach, enabling more precise

Exhaust Gas Measurement:
The ______________ gas analyzer was used for measuring the exhaust emissions
produced from liquid and gaseous fuels. The flue gas analyzer was connected to the
__________ software for recording the emission data. The exhaust gas sample was
drawn from the exhaust manifold using the probe and kept for a fixed time duration
under the specified set of operating conditions. These gas samples are then analyzed
in the flue gas analyzer for direct reading of CO, CO2, NOX, O2 and unburnt
hydrocarbon emissions.
