The Ripple Effect: How Volunteering at

Pehchaan- The Street School Transforms Lives


It was Anshika’s first day volunteering with Pehchaan- The Street School. She was leaving
the centre after the usual weekend session. A young boy was asked to walk her to the metro
station. On the way, they chatted about the usual stuff- name, class, favourite subject. Then
she asked him, “Badey hoke kya banna hai?” (“What do you want to be when you grow
up?”) Without hesitation or a thought, he smiled and said, “Mujhe pilot banna hai.” (“I
want to be a pilot”)

That one sentence stayed with me. Not because it was unexpected — but because it was
unshaken. So full of hope. So certain. He didn’t talk about limitations. He talked about the
sky. It reminded me — children dream without filters. It’s not their dreams that fall short —
it’s often the opportunities they’re given. At Pehchaan- The Street School, I saw how small
acts of support can nurture these dreams. A little attention. A little time. A little belief. It
makes a difference. Maybe we can’t change everything. But we can start by saying:“Haan,
tum ban saktey ho.”

Pehchaan- The Street School works with the basic objective- education is the most impactful
social contribution. Education will always stay with an individual, or even grow with time.
There is another old tales’ wisdom that if you only gather knowledge it will decrease, but if
you share it, it will increase. Therefore, the volunteers involved in the teaching initiative at
Pehchaan- The Street School- are college students themselves. This is why we can say that
volunteering doesn’t just transform students’ lives, it also transforms the volunteers. It is like
a Ripple Effect. One small action can cause a chain of larger and wider consequences, much
like when a stone is thrown into still water and it creates ripples that spread outward in
circles. In simple terms- one small act of volunteering or helping one child can lead to many
other positive outcomes you didn’t directly aim for, for instance it leads to influencing more
people, changing communities, or even inspiring others to act.

Pehchaan- The Street School is an NGO that has been working to educate those outside the
formal system- providing cost-free education to underprivileged children across Delhi-NCR
slums. It was established in 2015 and for the last one decade it has relentlessly dedicated
itself to the upliftment of students. Over 1600 students are taught in 10 different locations
across Delhi and Noida. Pehchaan- The Street school other than focus on basic literacy
programs also provides vocational education, computer studies to older students. Psychology
sessions, mental & physical health camps are organised for the overall wellbeing of the
students. Awareness about good touch & bad touch is also given to the students.

With over 800 volunteers on ground, and 600 people working remotely from all over India- it
is an NGO completely run with the help of volunteers. The ground operations of Pehchaan-
The Street School are supported by crowdfunding- no businesses or corporates involved in
the functioning of the NGO. However, we do invite companies and corporations to join us for
their CSR efforts. The children at Pehchaan- The Street School have had their lives changed
through learning- from silence to confidence, from waiting on the side-lines of society to
dreaming. At Pehchaan- The Street School every weekend becomes a celebration of change
for betterment and improvement of these students.

One would think that only students are being fostered at Pehchaan- The Street School but
that is not the complete picture. When individuals volunteer with Pehchaan- The Street
School, they also become the invisible beneficiaries of this initiative. Volunteering builds
empathy, leadership and purpose. Volunteering makes you understand your own privilege.
You learn more than you will ever be taught in university. A smile, a thank-you note, a child
remembering a lesson will be more rewarding than any external validations from completion
of internships in your college years.

Education is like a seed. You sow it in a student and it doesn’t just grow the student- it gives
them the ability to educate and support their families. It has the ability to lift up the coming
generations of that family, and even their whole communities away from societal stigma,
including them into mainstream society- opening up new doors of opportunity. If you yourself
are a student, from a rather privileged background, this is a call for you to join the chain-
use your privilege to uplift thousands of students out of their underserved backgrounds.
