CHAPTER FOUR

The Site

Location

Abia State is located in the southeastern region of Nigeria and experiences a tropical climate.
The state is known for its lush greenery, diverse wildlife, and vibrant culture. Understanding the
climate and weather patterns of Abia State is essential for residents, tourists, and businesses
operating in the region.

SITE ANALYSIS

The implication of the proposed site are discussed below under the following sub
heading .topography, Drainage, Vegetation, water supply, climatic element, Access and zoning.

Topography

The site is relatively flat land, since the nature of the land is the flat this makes it suitable for the
construction work

Vegetation

The site vegetation comprises of shrubs and grasses which some of them will be remove during
construction work

Soil s tructure

In this region (aba north abia state) the soil type found on the site are sand soil (beach soil type)
and loamy soil
CLIMATE ANALYSIS

Temperature

The site experience relatively high temperature throughout the year with variation between the
rainy and dry season. The average annual temperature ranges from 24°C (75°F) to 31°C (88°F).
During the rainy season, temperatures tend to be slightly cooler, ranging between 24°C (75°F)
and 28°C (82°F). The high humidity levels during this period contribute to a more comfortable
climate. In contrast, the dry season brings higher temperatures, with average daily temperatures
ranging from 29°C (84°F) to 31°C (88°F). The absence of rainfall and the influence of the
harmattan wind contribute to the heat during this period.

Humidity

The site experiences high levels of humidity throughout the year, particularly during the rainy
season. The humidity levels range between 75% and 90% during this period, making the
atmosphere feel moist and sticky. In contrast, the dry season brings slightly lower humidity
levels, ranging between 60% and 75%. However, the presence of the harmattan wind can make
the air feel drier and contribute to a hazy atmosphere.

Sunshine

During the dry months of November – April, the monthly variation in the amount of sunshine
follows the general trend of an increase. The decline in sunshine hours reaches its lowest values
in the month of August.

The influence of sunshine on the design shall be accommodated by way of the use of reflective
wall finishing

Rainfall

The site receives a significant amount of rainfall during the rainy season, contributing to its lush
vegetation and agricultural productivity. The average annual rainfall in the state is approximately
2,000mm (79 inches). The peak of the rainy season occurs in July and August, with monthly
rainfall averaging around 300mm (12 inches). However, rainfall can be unpredictable, and
occasional heavy downpours may cause flooding in certain areas. During the dry season, rainfall
significantly decreases, with some months experiencing no precipitation at all. The months of
December and January are usually the driest, with monthly rainfall below 10mm (0.4 inches). Its
influence is by way of good insulation against water penetration in flat roof or reasonable pitch.

UTILITIES, SERVICES AND INFRASTRUCTURE

These have to be with the essential amenities necessary for man to stay comfortably in an
environment. These amenities include; Transportation, Water electricity, Road network,
Telecommunication, sewage disposal, refuse disposal and drainage.

Transportation

The major transportation system in Aba north, Abia state is by taxi, motorcycle and buses.
Adequate parking shall be provided in the center to accommodate both vehicles and motorcycle.

Water

The major source of water in the area includes wells, boreholes and the water board.

The distance of sweat water (water board) is about 1km. Water reservation for both

Consumption and fire safety shall be provided for the reservation center.

Electricity

The Electricity in Aba north, Abia state is provided by power holding P. L. C. The Recreation

Center is to be electrically powered through the same means and in addition it shall be

Provided with a standby generator.

Road network

The availability of good arterial road in Aba north, Abia state helps to link the Enyimba city
centers to Aba north, Abia state and beyond.

Communication

The availability of the post office and the Nigerian Telecommunication Company will carter for
the communication needs of the people. The center shall have a post office and shall also be
linked with the Nigerian Telecommunication company line.

Refuse disposal

There is no organized disposal system within Aba north, Abia state town. Refuse are thrown
around open spaces and ditches. There are very few recognized refuse dumping sites.
Incinerators shall be provided in the proposed site for adequate refuse disposal.
Drainage

The drainage facilities are good but citizens mixed manage it; they either lined or unlined
channels that have been turned into refuse dumps. Proper drainage channels with covered top
shall be provided on the proposed site.

SITE SELECTION CRITERIA

The following criteria were used in selecting a site for the proposed site.

Accessibility: The maximum utilization of the project site is dependent on its accessibility. A
multi - faceted accessibility opportunity encourages and enhances the utility of the project.

Landscape resources: Natural landscape features such as the seascape, trees, beech sand and
many others are added advantage in the quest to proposed recreation center.

SITE APPRAISAL

Merits

 A good road links the site with other parts of the state.
 Good landscape resources abound in the area. This includes trees, the beach sand, and
etcetera.
 The soil type in the area has the good quality of percolating rainwater very fast.

Demerit

 Because of the low bearing capacity of the soil Raft foundation is required.
