Chapter 1: Refuge
People often say that in turbulent times, one learns to appreciate the little things. Concepts
poetic and whimsical like sunsets, the sound of birds, and the varied colors of the
delicate flowers.
Well, Hermione could tell those people that it was all nonsense.
The sunsets were practically the same every day, the cawing of the birds was really very
annoyed, causing him a headache and he truly couldn't care less about the tone and shading
from the flowers. They would all die anyway; they would all wither in a horrible way. Especially
when winter was beginning to strangle the life of the world.
No, when times were tough, and they really were, it distracted you from everything else. The rest was irrelevant.
and became distorted, clouded by the weight of darkness. Hermione noticed that even the classes
they had lost meaning and, worse, everyone seemed to feel the same.
McGonagall did everything possible to keep things as familiar and consistent as possible, but it was
useless. Now, Hogwarts was a pseudo-school; just a shell of ancient walls, that at some point
At one point, it was thought that they were safe. But of course, that was also nonsense.
It was the first of October, which meant that Hermione had not been at school for more than two weeks,
but it seemed like much longer. Which also meant that Dumbledore had died a long time ago.
exactly five months. No, Hogwarts was definitely not safe and everyone knew it. The

the brightest man I would ever meet.
Voldemort had returned. Well, he had returned a few years ago, but the curse of his return was becoming more
strong and threatening with each passing day. I was petrified. It was true. To hell with the stereotypes that

It certainly didn't help that her so-called best friends had left her there alone. Yes, Harry and Ron.

that decision, but it had been Lupin's suggestion. He loved his friends, but if he was right,

They had been awarded the title of Annual Prize, of course, possibly to have their own room and

Michael Corner was the other Annual Award winner, although he still hadn't figured out why he had been chosen.
They had probably only done it because he had been Prefect and a member of Dumbledore's Army, but
he doubted that he was doing much to prepare for the Order. He could have asked him, for

—Let me go! —he hissed, struggling against the hold as Snape marched toward Hogwarts. He tried to pin
the heels on the ground and taking the hands away from the man, but it was useless —"Traitor to the blood! Scum!"
Snape stopped his long strides and adjusted his grip on Draco's clothing to bring their faces closer. He did not

he had imagined their magnitude. The Dark Lord wanted him dead.
He hadn't spoken to either of his parents since then and had no idea what had happened to them.
He had just left the cabin in Shetland, with his only company consisting of the greasy and

deeply fucked; forcing him to continue with the blood traitor, who had told him that he could no longer

A piece of shit.
I had tried to ask questions about Snape's level of involvement with the Order, but the very
imbecile, as was customary, had told the minimum. Draco wondered if madness had, finally,
reached the man; that the entire premise of espionage was nothing more than hysterical ramblings of a
half-crazy man. He had killed Dumbledore after all. But then, why would he bring him

limbo, wondering when everything had become so complicated.
Five months in a dilapidated shed on the desolate island of Shetland, with only the noise of the

The old witch tightened her lips and turned her wise gaze to study the youngest inhabitant of the room.
Draco tried to keep the exchange going, but found himself looking away towards his own lap, with the
heavy eyelids from tiredness. I hadn't been able to manage to sleep decently for a whole night since
on the first of June, four days before his seventeenth birthday. Let's say it was the cold that was
introduced through the cracks of his hiding place, or the painful pangs of hunger he had suffered
for five months, or maybe, even the weak remnants of his consciousness.
Sleeping was a forgotten luxury, as was having a decent meal. A bed. A shower. And warmth...

Do you think that getting into a room with her will keep me safe? he questioned her with a face of

It seems so - she agreed - But if I were you, I wouldn't encourage myself to reconsider the agreement.
He narrowed his gaze and focused it on Snape with an expression of absolute disgust.
—Is this your idea of protection? —he spat, showing his teeth. —Handing me over to these idiots...
Enough - he quieted him calmly, still with his gaze fixed on McGonagall with an expression of
Curiosity — Are you sure that Miss Granger is the smartest option, Minerva?
This is a joke, Draco grunted, wrinkling his nose in disdain. I refuse to stay with that...
I won't tell you to shut your mouth again." Snape spat with disdain, taking a long step to
hit him in the back of the head.
He will do what he is told, Mr. Malfoy, the witch warned him rigidly. He only has one chance for
our part, afterwards it will be alone.
She felt the urge to challenge the witch in her throat, tickling her tonsils, but she was
so exhausted. Hogwarts was much warmer than the shed and the heat was like a sedative. The fluffy
the chair was absorbing it, no matter how much it cost to ignore it. The smell of food was also in the
air, betraying his empty stomach.
Should I understand that your silence means you accept the offer?
Offer. Buffoon. He was not offering any offer and everyone in the room knew it. It was an ultimatum.

His father would convince the Dark Lord to overlook his... accident. Maybe.

Notes from Bex-chan; And so another story begins... I know this chapter was very short, but I assure you that
the others will be longer! I hope that with this introduction I have succeeded in capturing your attention!
This fic will basically annoy Draco's head, a lot. And if we're going to do that, Hermione's too. I'm going

I don't regret it, this actually takes time (to translate) I promise I won't take long since I am

I will gladly send you the corresponding links. Fortunately, within my impulsiveness, I am somewhat

Hogwarts' leadership faces a complex task in balancing the protection of Draco Malfoy while ensuring security for the rest of the student body. McGonagall and the staff implement firm restrictions, such as confining Draco to certain areas and avoiding interactions with other students, which are designed to minimize risks and maintain peace. This balancing act involves accommodating the needs of a former adversary, reinforcing school discipline, and curbing potential backlash from student families and faculty. The leadership's decisions demonstrate understanding of the necessity to protect those with potential future value to the cause, despite the strains it places on infrastructure and relationships within the school, indicating a focus on long-term strategy and defining Hogwarts' role in the resistance .
Hermione's views on Harry and Ron's mission highlight profound themes of loyalty and sacrifice. Despite feeling somewhat abandoned as they pursue Horcruxes, she respects their resolve and understands the significant sacrifices involved, including her own exclusion and increased workload at Hogwarts. Her mixed emotions—characterized by loneliness, resentment, and dedication—reflect the dual nature of wartime decisions where loyalty requires personal sacrifices. Her silent acceptance of the situation underscores a commitment beyond personal desires, aligning her experiences with broader themes of selflessness and the burdens of friendship and duty during crises .
Snape's strategies to secure Draco's safety at Hogwarts include keeping him hidden and limiting his interactions with other students by assigning him a specific room and set of restrictions. This approach aims to minimize the possibility of detection and consequent retaliation from Voldemort or his followers. Entrusting Draco's custodianship to Hermione Granger is a calculated move by Snape and McGonagall, designed to blend him into the school's protective environment while avoiding attention. However, the effectiveness of these measures is circumscribed by Draco's own resistance and the tension created by his past actions. It remains tenuous, as these efforts rely heavily on compliance and the precarious balance of secrecy versus visibility within Hogwarts .
The conditions imposed on Draco Malfoy reflect Hogwarts' evolving role from a primarily educational institution to a tactical hub amid growing external threats. By enforcing strict limitations on Draco's movements and interactions, Hogwarts is transformed into a complex chessboard where even former adversaries must be assimilated into defense strategies. These conditions are designed to protect him without disturbing the fragile safety of the wider school community, highlighting Hogwarts' dual function as both sanctuary for the vulnerable and a stronghold resisting external forces. This illustrates a significant shift in operations, underscored by the application of strategic measures based on the volatile safety landscape dictated by Voldemort's rise .
Draco Malfoy endures severe psychological and strategic challenges while being under Snape's protection. Psychologically, Draco grapples with intense fear for his life due to Voldemort's animosity following his failure at the Astronomy Tower and the perceived betrayal of his bloodline. Strategically, he faces uncertainty and the precariousness of his position, as Snape, a man of shifting allegiances, is his only protector. His family's legacy burdens him, creating internal conflict about pride, survival, and the choice to abandon what his family historically has stood for. His isolation and inability to communicate with his family compound these issues, leaving him in a vulnerable state and skeptical about the motivations of his protector and the long-term viability of his hiding .
Hermione's emotional state is significantly affected by her workload and the ongoing conflict at Hogwarts. Overwhelmed by her responsibilities in converting Hogwarts into a refuge and researching Horcruxes late into the night, she feels isolated and left out of Harry and Ron's mission. This isolation exacerbates her stress and fear regarding Voldemort's growing influence, emphasizing the personal sacrifices and emotional toll on those left to sustain daily resistance efforts at Hogwarts. Her work reflects a dual commitment to advancing the greater cause and managing the personal cost of loneliness and burden, symbolizing the broader sacrifices made by those who remain to defend Hogwarts .
Following Dumbledore's death, Hermione Granger remains at Hogwarts not for regular studies, but to aid in turning the school into a refuge. This decision seems influenced by Remus Lupin, who might have considered the dynamics among Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Isolation arises as her two closest friends are away searching for Horcruxes, a mission that she wasn't included in, possibly to secure Hogwarts and support McGonagall's efforts. Her role implies an expectation from others that her presence offers hope, yet internally, she grapples with loneliness, as acknowledged by the niece of the Weasleys and her peers can not fill the void left by Ron and Harry .
The relationship between Snape and Draco Malfoy is fraught with complexities of allegiance and survival. Snape's vow to protect Draco after Dumbledore's murder places him in a position of protector, yet Draco harbors distrust towards Snape, seeing him as a 'blood traitor'. This complicated relationship underscores the ambiguity in Snape's allegiance, as he positions himself as both protector and traitor. This duality creates tension, with Draco aware that he is a pawn on a much larger chessboard, driven by fear and the desperate need to survive in a world where both sides of the conflict seek his life. Snape's inscrutability and Draco's wariness highlight the difficulty in navigating trust and protection amidst constantly shifting loyalties .
The assignment of duties and responsibilities to Hermione Granger and others like McGonagall signals a significant shift in Hogwarts' operational state amidst Voldemort's threat. With key figures such as Harry Potter absent on critical missions, Hermione's role in helping to maintain Hogwarts as a refuge highlights the necessity of relying on capable students in the face of adult shortages. The tasks given to students like Hermione show trust in their capabilities but also reflect resource strain and an urgent need to adapt educational structures to prioritize safety and rebellion support. This adaptation evidences a mix of desperation and hope, relying on individuals who might not typically bear such responsibilities and pointing to underlying tensions and frailties within Hogwarts' defenses .
The decisions made by McGonagall and Snape to keep Draco Malfoy at Hogwarts under specific conditions reflect a complex balancing act. On the one hand, they aim to protect Draco from Voldemort's revenge and his associates, given that both sides want him dead after the Astronomy Tower events. Allowing him to stay puts other students at potential risk, indicating the lengths to which Hogwarts leaders are willing to go to protect even those who were once on the opposite side. This decision also highlights the underlying strategy to save someone believed to have been manipulated by others into their actions, illustrating the teachers' belief in potential redemption and the importance of safeguarding lives caught in the current of war, which could strengthen their cause morally .
