Artificial Intelligence
Binilraj Adhikari
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines
that are programmed to think, learn, and problem-solve like humans. It encompasses
a wide range of technologies and techniques that enable machines to perform tasks
that typically require human intelligence.
Thinking Humanly: Cognitive Modelling Approach
Definition: This refers to designing AI systems that mimic human thought
processes and cognitive functions. The goal is to make machines understand and
interact with information similarly to humans.
Example: Creating a chatbot that understands natural language and responds in
a way that resembles human conversation. The bot should comprehend the
context, tone, and nuances of language to provide meaningful responses.
Acting Humanly
Definition: Acting humanly in AI refers to creating systems that perform tasks in a
way that appears human-like to an observer. This involves emulating human
behavior, actions, and responses.
Example: Developing a humanoid robot that can perform tasks such as walking,
talking, and recognizing facial expressions, making it seem more human-like in its
interactions and movements.
Thinking Rationally
Definition: Thinking rationally involves developing AI systems that follow logical
reasoning and adhere to principles of formal logic. It aims to create machines that
make decisions based on sound logical principles.
Example: Designing a chess-playing AI that evaluates possible moves,
anticipates future positions, and selects the move that maximizes the chances of
winning, following the rules of the game and logical decision-making.
Acting Rationally
Definition: Acting rationally involves creating AI systems that make decisions and
take actions that lead to optimal or goal-oriented outcomes. It may not necessarily
mimic human behavior but focuses on achieving rational objectives.
Example: Building an autonomous vehicle that navigates through traffic by
making decisions based on real-time sensor data and algorithms to reach its
destination safely, prioritizing efficient and safe routes.
Summary
In summary, these concepts provide different perspectives on how artificial
intelligence can be developed and evaluated. While "thinking humanly" and
"acting humanly" focus on replicating human-like cognition and behavior, "thinking
rationally" and "acting rationally" focus on logical reasoning and goal-oriented
decision-making, which may or may not align with human approaches. The
ultimate goal is often a combination of these elements, depending on the specific
application and objectives of the AI system.
Acting Humanly: Turing Test
Definition: The Turing Test, proposed by Alan Turing in 1950, is a test of a machine's ability to
exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from that of a human. In the test, a human judge
engages in natural language conversations with both a human and a machine without knowing
which is which. If the judge cannot reliably distinguish between the human and the machine
based on their responses, the machine is considered to have passed the Turing Test.
Example: In a Turing Test scenario, a human judge interacts with both a human and an AI
through a text interface. If the judge cannot consistently identify which responses come from the
human and which come from the AI, the AI is deemed to have passed the test.
