Preamble
This background guide only focuses on aspects of the international press, and it is requested
that members of the international press go through their respective background guides of their
committees to be provided with information on the agendas. This background guide serves as
a method of understanding the international press and the methods in which it functions.
Role of the international press in an MUN
In an MUN, the International Press (IP) acts as the conference’s media team. Their role includes:
● Covering proceedings of committees through articles, interviews, and reports.
● Documenting key debates and notable moments for transparency and record.
● Producing creative content such as satire pieces, cartoons, or opinion columns.
● Fact-checking and summarizing complex discussions for easier public understanding.
● Capturing photographs and videos for daily bulletins or social media updates.
Essentially, the IP keeps delegates and audiences informed, engaged, and accountable, similar
to a newsroom in an MUN.
Instructions for journalists:
There will be two types of submissions, newspaper articles and formal articles, which have
separate requirements.
Newspaper articles-
The newspaper articles will be small articles that will be synthesized to create a small
newspaper. This newspaper will be published an hour before the committee adjourns for the
day and will contain all the interesting news from the day itself. This newspaper article doesn’t
count as a final submission.

- Written on Google Docs, which allows the chairs of the international press to have
access to the possible articles being written
5
- Contain interesting news or interactions that occur within the committee
- One newspaper article will be sent out per day, with the articles being confirmed by 1.5
hours before the committee adjourns for the day.

Press conferences:
What is a press conference?
The press conference is a great experience and opportunity to display how much a delegate is
paying attention as a journalist to what the committee is saying. It allows delegates to answer
questions that the journalists ask regarding what they have spoken about in the past few days.
An interview given to journalists by a prominent person in order to make an announcement or
answer questions. Holding a press conference is a simple, effective way to communicate your
message with the media. Holding a successful press conference can generate news about your
cause and awareness about your project.
The press conferences will be happening at the beginning of the second day of the MUN.
Important aspects for journalists of the International press:
1. Research
A journalist must be well-researched on the committee that they are in, along with the
news channel that they are representing. The knowledge of current debates and events
that have happened that are related to the agenda is also essential. Kindly go through
the background guides of your respective committees to ensure that your knowledge of
the agenda is up to par. Journalists are requested to be informed on the relations
between nations in terms of the specific issues, as it would allow their articles to be
more detailed.
2. Unity
The International press delegates are not like the ones in committees but instead work
together as a team. It will consist of a number of reporters, and the competitiveness
should never diminish the teamwork. This will also allow the newspaper to involve
well-written news from each of the delegates.
8
3. Respect
The delegates of the International press must maintain courtesy at all times towards
members of their teams, the delegates of other committees, the executive board, and
the secretariat. When reporting on a delegate and their communications, it is required
to do so in a manner that doesn’t disrespect the delegate nor the chair of the
committee.
4. No Bias
The delegates must not be biased to other delegates due to personal opinions and
connections. All journalists must put away their personal opinions, beliefs and
ideologies throughout the MUN and ensure it doesn’t impact their work.
