CONCEPT OF VOCATION

Reflections by Roger Ebertz (Department Chair and Professor of Philosophy & Religion at the University
of Dubuque), August 17, 2015
Vocation is one’s response to a call from beyond oneself to use one’s strengths and gifts to make the world a
better place through service, creativity, and leadership.
A call from beyond oneself.
The concept of vocation rests on the belief that life is about more than me. To speak of “vocation” or
“calling” is to suggest that my life is a response to something beyond myself. Christians believe this
“something beyond myself” is God. But even people outside of this tradition often sense a call to serve
others, to create beauty, and to do good in the world. A call may be experienced in many ways, including the
following:

 A sense that God is leading me to a particular task, relationship, or mission.

 A deep desire to get involved when I am confronted with the needs of others.
 A sense that a particular task or kind of work is what I am supposed to be doing with my life at this
particular time.
 Personal fulfillment that I experience as I am involved in a particular task or work.
 The affirmation of others who recognize the work I am doing and the contributions I am making to
the world.

CONCEPT OF CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Career development

- is the process of choosing a career, improving your skills, and advancing along a career path. It's a
lifelong process of learning and decision-making that brings you closer to your ideal job, skillset, and
lifestyle.
- is the process of self-knowledge, exploration, and decision-making that shapes your career. It requires
successfully navigating your occupational options to choose and train for jobs that suit your
personality, skills, and interests. When someone pays careful attention to their career development,
they identify their own strengths and blind spots, then work hard to improve their skills. It also
involved learning about different roles and industries to find a match to their abilities, seeking out
opportunities to advance, and maybe even changing careers altogether if they find a more suitable
one.

CONCEPT OF CAREER PATH

Career path refers to the growth of the employee in an organization. Career Path basically means the various
positions an employee moves on one by one as he grows in an organization. The employee may move
vertically most of the time but also move laterally or cross functionally to move to a different type of job role.
Career path is used interchangeably with career ladder. Most successful companies chalk out a career
path/career ladder for the employees in order to provide them with a realistic picture of their position in the
coming years in order to retain them. Having a clear idea about future positions and job responsibilities, the
employee and the company can work to identify areas where relevant training is required for the employee to
build his competencies to fulfill future job requirements.

Career Path Example

The image above shows an example of career path an employee can take in an IT company. After Senior Software developer role/position in his
career, an employee can chose to be either a computer architect or an engineering manager. The career path he/she takes now would determine the
roles in future. In the example below Principal Computer Architect or Senior Manager are the two positions based on the positions chosen last.

INFLUENCES IN CAREER CHOICE

1. Different life roles

Every person plays different roles in his or her life. He is a worker at work, a parent, husband or wife at
home. And every person thinks about himself in these different roles and decides which role will be the most
important for him. And this decision may influence the career choice and the way the person looks at his
work.

2. Personality and interests

We are all different. We have different tastes, preferences, and tempers. And someone’s success at
the particular job position depends on these things. There is a special theory which is called Holland
Occupational Themes which can answer how the personality of the work =seeker influence on his choice, his
work ambitions and abilities.

3. Previous work experience

If someone has a positive role model in a particular career or positive work experience it will definitely
influence the future work choice. The research has shown that a person prefers to continue the work in which
he was more successful rather than start doing something new. In fact, it is a great idea to focus on the work
with proven success as well as with positive self-esteem for most of us.

4. Cultural background
The cultural background of the person as well as his regional area and ethnic group can influence the future
work choice. Besides family of the job seeker and local community also can become the factors which can
determine someone’s future career. Person’s expectations and life values are always shaped according to the
cultural issues, and they have connections with different parts of our lives. Understanding of the nature of our
expectations and values can help us to understand our personality and make a right career choice.

5. Economic and social conditions of life

Our life benchmarks and career choices always lie in the context of the economic and social issues. And it is
natural. Sometimes we can’t choose the society in which we have to live, but we can choose the way of life.
Different situations and conditions which take place in our economic and social lives give us a definite choice
and have a certain effect on it. And we have to take into account this factor.

6. The financial aspect

For many of us, money which we can earn is the most important factor which influences on the future career
choice. This is not surprising. We have to pay for everything that we have in our lives. But everyone has
different needs and ways of life that’s why think twice when considering the job which will not allow living
as you like and make a correct and reasonable choice.

7. Find Your Best Career

Along with pragmatic factors, there are issues which can influence someone’s future work choice. And they
lie in the non-material plane. It’s important to choose the career which will bring pleasure. Find your career
passion and the work will always be a joy. You have to choose something passionately for you. Find out what
can inspire you and follow your inspiration. Answer the simple question “do you really want this career?”. If
you are confused with your choice, just take some break and clarify your thoughts.

8. You can make your hobby your work

You have to make a decision what purposes do you have right now. And what do you want to get from your
work? What are the reasons in favor of some particular career? Do you want to earn money or you want to
develop your talents? It’s great if you have an opportunity to choose the career which is related to your hobby
or interests.

CAREER THEORY AND MODELS

There are numerous career theories and models, and no single one is sufficient to describe the broad field of career
development. In this section you will find introductions to some of these core theories, and their key ideas.

Career theories typically fall into one of three categories which, while not mutually exclusive, can be a useful form of
classification:

Theory of process

Theories of process relate to interaction and change over time. This can be characterized by theories in which there are a
series of stages through which people pass.

Theory of content

Theories of content relate to the characteristics of the individual and the context they live in. The influences on career
development are thought to be either intrinsic to the individual or originate from the context in which the individual lives.

Theory of content and process

Theories of content and process have been formed in response to a need for theory to take into account both of these key
areas. These theories encompass both the characteristics of individuals and their context, and the development and
interaction between them.

Timeline of Career Theories and Models

Holland’s theory

Careers are determined by an interaction between our personality and the environment in John Holland's Theory of Career
Choice. We want jobs with people like us.

Bandura’s theory

Watching what others do and the human thought process influences the careers we choose in Albert Bandura's Social
Cognitive Theory.

Parsons' theory

Frank Parsons developed the idea of matching careers to talents, skills and personality.

Krumboltz's theory

John Krumboltz's planned happenstance theory makes it OK to not always plan, because unplanned events could lead to
good careers.

Super's theory

Donald Super influenced the idea that developing a sense of self and realise that you change over time is important when
planning your career.

Te Whare Tapa Whā

The Māori philosophy toward health is based on a holistic health and wellness model called Te Whare Tapa Whā.
Developed by Dr Mason Durie in 1982, it can be applied to any health issue, whether it involves physical or
psychological well-being.

CAREER PATHING
Career path refers to the growth of the employee in an organization where an employee charts a course for
his/her career path, growth and development. It includes different positions an employee might perform as
he/she grows in an organization.

The employee can move vertically, laterally or cross functionally to move to a different type of job role.

Importance of Career path

Companies work on ensuring that its employees move in career path the way they want by conducting proper
job analysis in order to make sure the employees will remain with them in the long-term.

The employee can work with the company to identify areas where relevant training is required for the
employee to build his/her skillsets to be able to succeed at future job requirements.

When done right, carrer path benfits both the employee (by giving him/her the course, knowledge and
training for future career developement) and the employer (by ensuring employees will be commited longer
to the company).
