Section A
Objective(MCQ) - (3 Marks)
1. [3]
The angular velocity of a wheel increases from 100 rps to 300 rps in 10 s.
The number of revolutions made during that time is:
a. 600
b. 1500
c. 1000
d. 2000
Subjective - (3 Marks)
2. [3]
A bullet of mass 10g and speed 500m/s is fired into a door and gets
embedded exactly at the centre of the door. The door is 1.0m wide and
weighs 12kg. It is hinged at one end and rotates about a vertical axis
practically without friction. Find the angular speed of the door just after
the bullet embeds into it.
(Hint: The moment of inertia of the door about the vertical axis at one
end is ML2/3).
3. [3]
To maintain a rotor at a uniform angular speed of 200rad s-1, an engine
needs to transmit a torque of 180Nm. What is the power required by the
engine?
(Note: uniform angular velocity in the absence of friction implies zero
torque. In practice, applied torque is needed to counter frictional torque).
Assume that the engine is 100% efficient.
4. [3]
Find the moment of inertia of a sphere about a tangent to the sphere,
given the moment of inertia of the sphere about any of its diameters to
be 2MR2/ 5, where M is the mass of the sphere and R is the radius of the
sphere.
5. [3]
A solid cylinder of mass 20kg rotates about its axis with angular speed
100rads-1. The radius of the cylinder is 0.25m. What is the kinetic energy
associated with the rotation of the cylinder? What is the magnitude of
angular momentum of the cylinder about its axis?
6. [3]
If earth contracts to half its radius. What would be the length of the day?
7. [3]
A particle of 10kg mass is moving in a circle of 4m radius with a constant
speed of 5 m/ sec. What is its angular momentum about (i) the centre of
circle (ii) a point on the axis of the circle and 3m distant from its centre?
8. [3]
A solid cylinder of mass 20kg rotates about its axis with angular speed
100rads-1. The radius of the cylinder is 0.25m. What is the kinetic energy
associated with the rotation of the cylinder? What is the magnitude of
angular momentum of the cylinder about its axis?
9. [3]
A solid sphere of mass 2kg is rolling down an inclined plane of angle of
inclination 30°. What is the agent which supplies the external torque for
the rotational motion of the sphere? Calculate its value. Also find the
value of the torque if radius of sphere is 40cm.
10. [3]
A metre stick is balanced on a knife edge at its centre. When two coins,
each of mass 5g are put one on top of the other at the 12.0cm mark, the
stick is found to be balanced at 45.0cm. What is the mass of the metre
stick?
11. [3]
A hoop of radius 2m weighs 100kg. It rolls along a horizontal floor so that
its centre of mass has a speed of 20cm/s. How much work has to be
done to stop it?
12. [3]
A car weighs 1800kg. The distance between its front and back axles is
1.8m. Its centre of gravity is 1.05m behind the front axle. Determine the
force exerted by the level ground on each front wheel and each back
wheel.

13. [3]
As shown in the two sides of a step ladder BA and CA are 1.6m long and
hinged at A. A rope DE, 0.5m is tied half way up. A weight 40kg is
suspended from a point F, 1.2m from B along the ladder BA. Assuming
the floor to be frictionless and neglecting the weight of the ladder, find the
tension in the rope and forces exerted by the floor on the ladder. (Take g =
9.8m/s2)
(Hint: Consider the equilibrium of each side of the ladder separately).
14. [3]
A 2kg body and a 3kg body are moving along the x-axis. At a particular
instant, the 2kg body is 1m from the origin and has a velocity of 3ms-1
and the 3kg body is 2m from the origin and has velocity of -1 ms-1. Find
the position and velocity of the centre of mass and also find the total
momentum.
15. [3]
A constant torque of 120N-m rotates its point of action by an angle of
30°. What is the work done by the torque?
