WAN Services for Windows NT V3R4
Introduction
===========================================================================
These Release Notes apply to the Eicon Technology WAN Services for
Windows NT V3R4 product; they supersede any corresponding information in
the WAN Services for Windows NT System Guide (206-100).
These Release Notes are organized as follows:
General
Limitations
Corrections
Upgrading to V3R4
WAN Services for Windows NT
EiconCards
IP Routing Services
[Link] Considerations
General
===========================================================================
* At this time, the XPAD/RAS combination is the only function of
WAN Services which supports X.25 CCITT/ITU Recommendation 1988. All
other functions of WAN Services for Windows NT support X.25 CCITT/
ITU Recommendation 1984.
* When manually configuring the memory address of an inactive EiconCard
using the Adapter Properties dialog box, the memory segments C0000-
C7000, CC000, and CD000 may appear to be free when they are actually
being used by another system component. This is a limitation of the
system component improperly advertising its used resources to
Windows NT.
* If you are running Windows NT 4.0 with a Motorola Power Stack, you must
upgrade the firmware to version 2.06A or later to successfully
operate WAN Services for Windows NT V3R4. With other RISC PCs
(PowerPC, DECAlpha, or MIPS), the firmware may also need to be
upgraded. Check with the PC manufacturer or the Windows NT release
notes.
Limitations
===========================================================================
* If more than 250 [Link] ports are configured for any one EiconCard, you
may not be able to use some of the command-line utilities, such as
ECMODULE and ECDIALER.
To use these EiconCard commands, you must reduce the number of
configured [Link] ports per EiconCard to below 250.
Corrections
===========================================================================
* Contrary to what is stated in the WAN Services for Windows NT Online
Manual, EiconCards with 512KB of memory will not fully support all
possible WAN Services configurations. Eicon Technology recommends
using EiconCards with at least 1MB of memory.
Upgrading to V3R4
===========================================================================
This section contains information on upgrading your WAN Services for
Windows NT software to WAN Services for Windows NT V3R4.

WAN Services for Windows NT
===========================================================================
This section contains information relevant to installing and configuring
WAN Services for Windows NT V3R4.
Aborted Installation
--------------------
If the WAN Services for Windows NT V3R4 installation aborts for any
reason, you must run the [Link] program to remove any files or
registry entries that were left on your PC by the aborted installation.
After running this program, restart the installation from the beginning.
The [Link] program is stored in the following locations on the
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 CD:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
CPU Platform : Location
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
i386 : DRVLIB\NETCARD\X86\EICON\I386\[Link]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
MIPS : DRVLIB\NETCARD\MIPS\EICON\MIPS\[Link]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Alpha : DRVLIB\NETCARD\ALPHA\EICON\ALPHA\[Link]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
PowerPC : DRVLIB\NETCARD\PPC\EICON\PPC\[Link]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disabling the Eicon RIP Service
-------------------------------
The Microsoft Service Pack 2 provided with Windows NT (version 3.51 and
later) contains the IP RIP Service required to operate WAN Services for
Windows NT. Earlier versions of WAN Services for Windows NT with IP
Routing Services (V3R2a or earlier) supplied their own Eicon RIP
Service. When upgrading from an earlier version to V3R4, this Eicon RIP
Service is automatically replaced by Microsoft's IP RIP Service during
installation of the WAN Services for Windows NT product.
Note With Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft RIP Service is supported on the NT
Server only. Therefore, on the NT 4.0 Workstation, you can only
use static routes (Microsoft's ROUTE command). Dynamic routes are
not supported on the Windows NT 4.0 Workstation.
Configuration
-------------
This section contains information on how to configure WAN Services for
Windows NT using the WAN Services Configuration program.
X.25 Maximum Packet Size Considerations
When configuring an X.25/HDLC or X.25/SDLC connection using the
WAN Services Configuration program, make certain that the HDLC or SDLC
Maximum Frame N1 (octets) size is at least 8 bytes larger than the X.25
Maximum Packet size. For example, if you configure the X.25 Maximum
Packet size to 256, then you must configure the HDLC or SDLC Maximum
Frame N1 (octets) size to at least 264.
The X.25 Maximum Packet size parameter is located in the X.25
configuration panel, and the HDLC and SDLC Maximum Frame N1 (octets)
size parameters are found under the HDLC and SDLC configuration panels,
respectively.
PPP Packet Size
When using a PPP connection, there is no PPP packet size negotiation.
Therefore you must not change the default value of the PPP packet size
of 1500. This parameter is found under the PPP configuration panel in
the WAN Services Configuration program.
Router Connection Filters
-------------------------
The number of router connection filters activated on a connection is
limited by the Max IP Filters setting in the Eicon Router Driver
parameters dialog box of the Network Control Panel. Although it is
possible to define more filters in Eicon Configuration Manager than you
have defined in the router driver configuration, these additional
filters are not accepted by the driver, and are therefore not activated
on the connection.
To correct this problem, increase the Max IP Filters setting in your
router driver configuration. See "Configuring the Router Driver and NDIS
Adapter" in Chapter 4 of the WAN Services for Windows NT Online Manual
for further information.
Uninstalling WAN Services
-------------------------
This section contains information about uninstalling WAN Services for
Windows NT.
Contrary to what is said in the WAN Services for Windows NT System Guide
(206-100), it is not necessary to use the NET STOP EICONNDISROUTER and
MPR STOP commands prior to removing WAN Services for Windows NT or the
IP Routing Services. These commands are performed automatically by the
Uninstall program.
Removing the WAN Services Directory
When uninstalling the WAN Services for Windows NT, the WAN Services
directory (default is C:\WSNT) is normally removed automatically. It may
fail to be removed for any of the following reasons:
* Extra files were manually copied or created in the WAN Services
directory, such as a log file or TRACE file
* A DOS box is open and is in the WAN Services directory (default is
C:\WSNT)
* File Manager is open and its focus is the WAN Services directory
(default is C:\WSNT)
* The WAN Services Configuration program ([Link]) is running
If any of the preceding conditions prevented the WAN Services directory
from being deleted, you must manually delete the directory.
EiconCards
===========================================================================
The following items are specific to EiconCard hardware.
General
-------
* This version of WAN Services for Windows NT does not support the
EiconCard NA, EiconCard SPCC, ACC8/PC, and the ISDN/PC EiconCard,
which are obsolete.
Limitations
-----------
* When adding a new EiconCard through the Network Control Panel, make sure
that the Eicon Configuration Manager is closed. If you leave this
program open, it will behave abnormally when you try to configure
the new card.
* If you configure any EiconCard with the Clocking parameter set to
"INT+DPLL" and the Data Encoding parameter set to "NRZI", you must
not set the Line Speed parameter any higher than 19200 bps.
* If you configure any EiconCard with the Clocking parameter set to
"INT+DPLL" and the Data Encoding parameter set to "FM0" or "FM1",
you must not set the Line Speed parameter any higher than 38400 bps.
* If you configure any EiconCard with the Clocking parameter set to "INT",
you must make sure that the cable(s) are properly attached and
terminated on the other end. Failure to do so may result in an Out
of State condition for the EiconCard. It may also cause the
EiconCard commands (ECCARD, ECMODULE, and ECDIALER) not to function
properly.
All of these parameters are found in the Sync configuration panel in the
WAN Services Configuration program.
EiconCard C21
-------------
* The EiconCard C21 cannot be used on a PC running Windows NT 4.0 (Beta
version) and installed with an AHA1520/1522 SCSI adapter from
Adaptec. This is due to an I/O port conflict between the SCSI
adapter driver and the Plug and Play interface of the EiconCard C21.
* When used with the EiconCard C21, the ECCARD LIST command displays
information stored in the registry instead of the actual
configuration information stored on the EiconCard. Therefore, if you
have changed your configuration but not yet reloaded the EiconCard,
the information provided by executing the ECCARD LIST command will
not reflect the active configuration on your EiconCard C21. To avoid
this problem, be sure to reload the EiconCard after changing the
configuration and before executing any commands.
* With the EiconCard C21, traces must be enabled from the Eicon
Configuration Manager instead of from the command line. The
parameters controlling this function (Mail and NCB) appear on the
Card PC panel when you select the Advanced option from the
Parameters menu.
EiconCard C21 Limitations
For this release of WAN Services for Windows NT, a maximum of two ports
can be operated successfully on the EiconCard C21. In addition, you must
ensure that the card resources allocated to these ports are configured
to the minimum values required to support your connections.
Configurations using more than one protocol on the same EiconCard C21
may have problems loading due to memory limitations. This problem is
indicated by an error message stating that the configuration is not
loadable, received after you issue the ECCARD START command.
In most cases, this problem can be resolved by reducing the card
resources specified in the configuration (for example, reducing the
Window Size or Call Directory Entries values in Connection Manager).
However, a few configurations will still be unable to load, even when
card resources are reduced. The table on the next page identifies these
configurations. Eicon Technology recommends that you avoid using these
configurations whenever possible.
Note The limitations presented in the table were applicable at the time
of release. Due to the wide range of configuration factors
affecting card performance, this information should be taken as a
guideline only. For more information, contact Eicon Technology or
your service representative

Note In general, configurations using the same protocol on both ports
of the EiconCard C21 should experience no difficulties loading
when Connection Manager resources are minimized.
Detecting EiconCards
--------------------
WAN Services for Windows NT automatically detects EiconCards installed
in the host machine using native Windows NT facilities (not Plug and
Play). However, some older versions of the DPNA, HSI, MPNA, and EC/PC
EiconCards (those manufactured before 1990) cannot be detected.
For these cards, you must enter the I/O port address, slot position, IRQ
level, and memory address settings manually on the Settings page of the
Adapter Properties dialog box. This dialog box pops up when you install
a new card through the Network Control Panel.
EiconCards and 16-Bit Adapter Cards
-----------------------------------
Special consideration should be made when installing an ISA EiconCard in
an ISA or EISA PC. If the PC contains 16-bit peripheral ISA cards which
use memory windows (such as LAN or video adapters), then the EiconCard
cannot share the same 128k memory group address.
The 128k memory group addresses are as follows:
A000-BFFF
C000-DFFF
E000-FFFF
For example, if you have a 16-bit LAN card which uses a memory window at
C800-CFFF then you would not be able to put your EiconCard, or any other
8-bit card which uses a memory window, at any address in the C000 to
DFFF range.
If there is difficulty in managing the memory addresses, most peripheral
16-bit cards can be configured as 8-bit cards. This can usually be done
through jumper selections on the card or by putting the 16-bit card in
an 8-bit slot. Check the manufacturer's documentation for their
recommendations.
Most of Eicon Technology's EiconCards now support memory segments in
extended memory addresses of FC000-FEF00, however, these memory
addresses can only be used on PCs with 16MB of RAM or less.
If you receive the following error message in the Event Viewer:
ECNB: "/dev/EEC: Possible shared memory window conflict with a 16-bit
adapter."
while operating the EiconCard, then Eicon Technology recommends the
following steps:
* Change the EiconCard memory address to the E000 range
* If the E000 range does not work then try the B000 range, if that
EiconCard supports it
* If there is still a problem with trying to get your EiconCard and 16-bit
adapters to work together, contact your Eicon Technology
representative
The address range B000-BF00 is not supported on EISA PCs or multi-
processor machines.
I/O Port Settings and EiconCard Detection
-----------------------------------------
* WAN Services for Windows NT may fail to detect an EiconCard installed in
your PC if that card's I/O port setting conflicts with the setting
of another card or peripheral device installed in the same PC.
Ensure that all EiconCards are set to an unused I/O port.
* If you install multiple EiconCards of the same type in the same PC and
give them all the same I/O port setting, WAN Services for Windows NT
sees them as a single EiconCard. Therefore, only one instance of
that EiconCard type will be detected and listed in the Detection
dialog box. To detect all EiconCards, you must assign each one a
unique, unused I/O port setting.
ISDN Connections
----------------
* If, on an active ISDN port, the ISDN line is physically disconnected
then reconnected, the port may not reactivate. To reactivate the
port you must issue the ECDIALER command from the WAN Services PC
command line. Follow the example below,
ECDIALER DIAL /Port p /Number n
where p is the ISDN port number and n is the number you want to dial,
to reactivate an ISDN port.
* If the ISDN cable is disconnected, all current calls in progress are
dropped. The ISDN physical layer is reactivated after the
reconnection of the cable. The ISDN dialer does not re-establish the
calls. The application in use (for example, IP Routing Services)
must re-establish the calls. Some applications do this
automatically, whereas with other applications you must manually
redial. See the documentation that accompanies the application you
are using for more information.
In all situations, please ensure that your cables are connected before
starting WAN Services.
* The ECMODULE STATUS command is unable to provide "listen pending"
information for ISDN connections.
Installing EiconCards in an EISA Computer
-----------------------------------------
WAN Services for Windows NT includes EISA configuration files that must
be used with the EISA Configuration Utility (ECU). The two files
supplied are described below.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
EISA Configuration file: EiconCards Supported
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
![Link] : EC/PC and older revisions* of the
: following models that do not support the
: extended interrupts (IRQ 10-15): HSI/PC,
: DPNA/PC, MPNA/PC.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
![Link] : HSI/PC, DPNA/PC, MPNA/PC, IMC/PC,
: EICONCARD S51.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Older revisions of the abovementioned models are distinguished by the
fact that they do not have a 16-bit bus connector.
Eicon Technology recommends that you run the ECU before physically
installing the EiconCard. This will allow you to make switch settings on
the card before inserting the EiconCard in the PC.
Most ECUs have similar implementations. Follow the generic steps below
to install and configure your EISA PC to use an EiconCard:
1 Start the ECU and follow the manufacturer's instructions to add an
adapter in an empty slot.
2 The ECU will present you with a list of adapter configuration files.
Follow the manufacturers instructions to load an OEM configuration
file. Get the Eicon EISA configuration files from the following
directories on the Windows NT 4.0 CD:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
CPU Platform : Location
--------------------------------------------------------------------
i386 : DRVLIB\NETCARD\X86\EICON
--------------------------------------------------------------------
MIPS : DRVLIB\NETCARD\MIPS\EICON
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Alpha : DRVLIB\NETCARD\ALPHA\EICON
--------------------------------------------------------------------
PowerPC : DRVLIB\NETCARD\PPC\EICON
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Note If your ECU does not support access to CD-ROM files, then you
must copy the EISA configuration files (!EIC*.CFG) from the
Windows NT 4.0 CD onto a disk before running the ECU.
3 Select the proper Eicon EISA configuration file from the list.
4 When the EiconCard definition is properly added for one of the empty
slots, exit this menu and go to the View Details or Edit Details menu.
5 From the View Details or Edit Details menu, locate the slot
configured for the EiconCard. The system will have already produced
a conflict-free configuration based on the card capability and the
resources already used on the system. You may re-configure the I/O
port, IRQ, and shared memory address to suit your needs.
6 Once the configuration is complete, you must "lock" it. On most
systems, this is done through the Advanced menu.
7 On the Examine Required Switches menu there is a diagram of the
EiconCard I/O port address switch block (SW1) with the proper ON/OFF
settings to match the configured I/O port.
8 Set the switches on the EiconCard SW1 switch block as they appear in
the diagram.
9 Save the configuration and exit the ECU.
10 You can now shut down your PC and physically install the EiconCard
in the proper slot.
When configuring your EiconCard with the WAN Services Configuration
program, you must use the same values that you used to configure the
EiconCard with the ECU.
IP Routing Services
===========================================================================
This section contains information on configuration and operation of IP
Routing Services.
Backup Connections
------------------
This section contains information on configuring and using backup
connections with the IP Routing Services.
* You must make sure that the port configured as the backup connection,
has the Idle Timer parameter set to more than one second. The Idle
Timer is found in the X.25 configuration panel in the WAN Services
Configuration program. The Idle Timer is made available after
clicking the Advanced button in the WAN Services Configuration
program.
* You must make certain that the local and remote routers' Number of
Retries and Delay parameters have different values. This will make
sure that they do not keep retrying at the same time. Setting the
Number of Retries to a different value on each side will ensure that
after the connections retries are exhausted on one side the other
side will continue to try make the connection. The Number of Retries
and Delay parameters are found in the Router Connection Information
dialog box in the WAN Services Configuration program.
* If you are configuring a primary connection for use over an X.25 two-way
dialup connection and using the Hayes AT(tm), V.25bis, or ISDN
dialer, you must make certain that the Inactivity Timeout parameter
is set to 300 seconds or more, or it is set to zero (default), which
means there is no timeout. The Inactivity Timeout parameter is found
in the Router Connection Information dialog box in the WAN Services
Configuration program.
X.25 SVC Backups
When using an X.25 switched virtual circuit (SVC) backup connection for
a primary connection using an X.25 virtual circuit (SVC or PVC), you
must increase the Number of Retries for both the primary and backup
connections from the default value of 0 to a minimum of 5. This
parameter is found in the Router Connection Information dialog box in
the WAN Services Configuration program.
ECNDIS Driver
-------------
If changes have been made to the IP Routing Services configuration that
necessitate the stopping and restarting of the ECNDIS driver, then you
must reinitialize the ECNDIS driver by rebooting your WAN Services PC to
start the IP Routing Services with the updated configuration. This is
because the ECNDIS driver depends on other Microsoft services that
cannot be stopped.
Multi-Processor PCs
-------------------
When using IP Routing Services on a multi-processor PC, you must make
certain that the Global Pool Tx Buffers parameter is set to zero
(default). The IP Routing Services may fail to function if this
parameter value is set any higher than zero. To configure the Global
Pool Tx Buffers parameter follow these steps:
1 In the Network Control Panel Applet (NCPA), highlight the "Eicon Router
Driver" entry in the Installed Network Software list, and click
Configure.
2 Enter zero (0) for the Global Pool Tx Buffers parameter, and click OK.
Connecting to an Eicon Technology ICS or ICR
--------------------------------------------
Maximum Transmission Units (MTUs) are not configurable on an Eicon
Technology InterConnect Server (ICS) or InterConnect Router (ICR). Both
ICS and ICR use a default MTU of 1492. Therefore, when connecting a
WAN Services PC to an ICR or ICS using IP Routing Services, you must
configure the MTU parameter, on the WAN Services PC, to a value of 1492.
Follow these steps to configure the MTU value:
1 In the NCPA, highlight the appropriate instance of the Eicon NDIS
Adapter entry in the Installed Adapter Cards list, and click Configure.
2 Enter 1492 as the MTU value in the Logical Adapter Configuration
dialog box, and click OK.
Connecting to a Cisco Router
----------------------------
When configuring the CHAP authentication protocol on a connection
between a WAN Services for Windows NT router and a Cisco router, you
must set the Host Name and User Name parameters on the Cisco router to
identical values. These values must also match the value of the User
Name parameter configured on the WAN Services for Windows NT PC.
[Link] Considerations
===========================================================================
This section contains information on operating WAN Services for Windows
NT with [Link].
Configuring [Link]
-----------------
In most cases, when configuring [Link] for use with RAS or other binary
transfer protocol via third-party communication programs, no
configuration other than adding the port is required. The default
settings for the [Link] ports are sufficient for most setups.
[Link] and RAS
-------------
RAS does not support the setting of "Any X.25 port" as a device in
RASPHONE when used with [Link]. When configuring RASPHONE Phone Book
entries for use with [Link], you must select the specific COM ports that
are configured for use by [Link]
[Link] and 16-Bit Communications programs
----------------------------------------
[Link] is optimized for use with Microsoft Remote Access Service (RAS).
There may be some incompatibilities or poor performance when used with
older 16-bit communications programs running under Windows NT.
