MODULE IN SCIENCE 6
Second Quarter / Week 5 / Day 1

OBJECTIVE:
Let’s Target This
Good day! Today, you are going to explore the world of Science. You have learned that
animals can be divided into groups – vertebrates and invertebrates. Both of these can be divided into
smaller groups. It’s my pleasure to introduce to you, another group of animals today. After studying this
module, you will be able to describe the characteristics of the following groups of invertebrates:
- insects and spiders.

YOUR LESSON:
Let’s Study This
Invertebrates are animals that do not have backbone. There are eight large groups of
invertebrates: Porifera, Coelenterates, Platyhelminthes, Nematoda, Annelida, Mollusca, Echinoderms
and Arthropods

Arthropoda (Arthropods) Arthropoda or Arthropods are joint-legged animals. They make up the
largest group in the animal kingdom. Their legs are jointed. Their bodies and legs are made up of
sections. They have an outside shell called the exoskeleton. Arthropods are divided into five groups:
insects, arachnids, crustaceans, centipedes and millipedes.

Insects are small, six-legged animals or have three pairs of Parts of insects
walking legs, one or two pairs of wings and a pair of antennae. Their
bodies are divided into three parts: the head, the thorax, and the
abdomen. They change their form as they grow. They are the most
numerous animals on earth. Bees, ants, wasps, butterflies, cockroaches,
ladybugs, fireflies, termites, moths and grasshopper are insects.

Arachnids have four pairs of walking

legs. They have two body segments and no antennae. Some possess
spinnerets where they spin silk thread into webs, cocoons and nests like
spiders. Most arachnids live on land and few live on water. Examples of
arachnids are scorpions, mites, ticks and spiders.

Spider is an example
of arachnids

2ND QUARTER/WEEK 4/ DAY 3
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW: Classify invertebrates into insect, spider, worm, shellfish,
and snail. (S6LT-lle-f-3)
INTRODUCTION
Animals are diverse and is widely distributed on Earth. Large animal variation is the
reason why people grouped them according to their distinct characteristics, habitat and
the food that they eat. Animals can also be grouped according to the presence of vertebral
column or backbone. When animals have backbones (with bony skeleton) they are called
Vertebrates. Some examples of vertebrates are birds, reptiles, fish and mammals. On
the other hand, Invertebrates are animals without backbone (without bony skeleton),
Some examples are insects, spiders, worms, shellfishes, and snails. Insects and spiders
belong to the largest family of invertebrate called Arthropods. They have jointed
appendages, a segmented body (bodies divided into series of repeat sections) and
an exoskeleton (hard outer layer that covers, supports, and protects the body). Some
worms are example of Annelids, they have soft, moist body wall used for survival and
breathing mechanism. Their bodies are composed of rings or segment. Moreover,
shellfish and snail belongs to a classification called Mollusk. They have a soft bodies and
some are enclosed in a hard shell or exoskeleton.

DID YOU KNOW THAT…

Ecological imbalance is when a natural or human-caused
disturbance disrupts the natural balance of an ecosystem.
One of the causes of ecological imbalance is the
interference in the habitat of organisms affecting
interactions in the food web. Imagine what will happen in
the if the cricket which is an insect was removed in the
cycle? The frog who depends on the cricket will be greatly
affected because his source of food will be limited. The hawk
will also get affected because it has the frog as one of its
sources of food. Generally, the declining number of crickets in the food web will affect
each organism in the feeding relationship web.

This module will bring you to the Animal Kingdom where you will be familiarized
with the vertebrates and invertebrates that are commonly seen in your areas.

Objective: Make an inventory of vertebrates and invertebrates that are commonly

seen in the community.

LESSON FOR TODAY: BRING TO LIGHT

As we have already tackled from our previous lessons how to distinguish the characteristics of both
vertebrates and invertebrates, we will now make a list of all the vertebrates and invertebrates we see in
our areas.

Vertebrates are animals of a large group distinguished by the possession of a backbone or spinal column
like mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fishes. Invertebrates, on the other hand, are animals that do
not have backbones or spinal column. Insects, spiders, snails and other different kinds of worms are the
few examples of invertebrates.
In order to have a deeper understanding about the lesson, please do the given activity.

GENERALIZATION Just Remember:

We could categorized Vertebrates into 5 main groups:

A. Mammals-humans are included in this group. They are warm blooded with possession of fur and hair, with
mammary glands used to feed their baby.
B. Birds- warm blooded with wings and are covered with feeders
C. Fish- cold blooded aquatic, with fins and tails for swimming and their bodies are covered in scales.
D. Amphibians- cold blooded that can live on land and water. They breathe through their skin and lungs like
frogs and salamanders.
E. Reptiles- cold blooded and can live both on land and water but they are more adapted to living on land
than amphibians. They have hard scales or shells covering their bodies like turtles.

All of these animals do all possess backbones or vertebral column where it surrounds and protects the nerve
cord. Vertebrates also have a well –developed brain, a pair of eyes, a circulatory system with a heart, a
pharynx, and a mouth with muscles.

Invertebrates are divided into 6 main groups:

A. Sponges or poriferans who are pore-bearing filter-feeding animals,
B. Cnidarians (sea jellies, corals) with nematocytes used for capturing prey,
C. Echinoderms (sea urchins, and sea stars) with radially symmetrical and spiny marine
animals,
D. Annelids or worms,
E. Mollusks such as octopuses, snails, and clams
F. Arthropods (insects, spiders, and lobsters) with a hard exoskeleton, jointed legs,
segmented bodies.
Aside from not having backbones, they are also multicellular, no cell walls, like all other
animals.

SECOND QUARTER/ WEEK 5 / DAY 5

This module will focus

on the animals who are
seriously at risk of extinction in
all parts of the world and what
are the possible means and
ways of protecting and saving
these animals. It is not only for
the awareness of the
endangered species who are
facing extinction but also to
promote environmental
conservation.

Objective: To create an album of endangered species (local and

international) and to practice ways of caring and protecting these animals
(through internet).

LESSON FOR TODAY: BRING TO LIGHT

Like any other species on earth, animals need love and care from us humans. If
we will not give them the proper care they need, they will be under threat or near
extinction. In other words, they would likely to become an endangered species. When a
specie or animal is endangered it means that they are disappearing fast or have a very
small population- not large enough to survive.

According to scientists, the best way to protect the endangered species is to protect the
special places where they live, their habitat. We should also educate our family about
endangered species in our area.

In order to have a deeper understanding about the lesson, please do the given activity.

GENERALIZATION Just Remember:

Endangered Animals

These animals are said to be endangered and extinct. But let us first differentiate the meaning of
endangered from extinct. When we say extinct it means animals are gone already while
endangered means: animals are in danger, under threat or might become extinct soon. Animals
are becoming extinct for different reasons. They maybe at risk due to factors such as habitat
loss, rising human populations, climate change, poaching (defined as illegal hunting or capturing
of wild animals) and invasive species (an organism that causes ecologiocal or economic harm in
a new environment where it is not [Link] plastic pollution has also affected some species.
Of those 41, 415 species, 16,306 are considered endangered species threatened with extinction.

EVALUATION Save Me in Album

Make a research of all the endangered species in all parts of the world from the internet or from
other learning resources. Print or make a cut out pictures (own drawings are also accepted) of
those endangered animals you would be searching for. Identify the names of those animals and
what countries they are from. Causes why they are on the Endangered Species’ list. Suggest at
least 3 realistic ideas to protect these animals. At least 2 endangered animals from the
Philippines and 3 animals from different countries. You may place it on a bond paper or you can
make an album for this activity as your output.
Note: There is a prepared rubrics for this album activity.

This example is done for your references.

Flatworms have ribbon-like bodies and lack body cavities, roundworms have a body cavity but no segmentation, and segmented worms have both body cavities and segmented bodies . These structural differences allow them to adapt to varying ecological niches; for instance, segmented worms like earthworms improve soil aeration and fertility, while flatworms may survive in more constrained environments due to their simpler anatomy.

Educational activities like slogan making and research on endangered species encourage students to think critically about conservation and instill practical measures to protect endangered animals. By engaging creatively with these topics, students can develop a personal connection to conservation, fostering proactive attitudes towards preserving biodiversity .

The document highlights that invertebrates like worms, shellfish, and snails do not have backbones, setting them apart from vertebrates, which do have an internal backbone structure . The teaching materials use specific examples like segmented worms and mollusks to illustrate differentiation by characteristics such as body segmentation and presence of shells.

The document suggests activities such as planting trees, refraining from harmful practices like hunting, advocating for wildlife protection laws, and reducing personal consumption of products made from endangered animals . These activities align with broader strategies like habitat conservation, legal protection, ecological awareness, and sustainable consumption to safeguard endangered species.

Insects have three main body parts (head, thorax, and abdomen) and typically have three pairs of legs and a pair of antennae . On the other hand, spiders have two body segments and do not have antennae .

The document's exercises, such as slogan making and research projects on endangered species, encourage students to actively engage with conservation issues, conveying the importance of protecting species like the Philippine eagle and tamaraw . This approach can instill a sense of responsibility and awareness, potentially leading to behavioral changes that support conservation efforts.

Body cavities in worms are spaces within the body that can house organs. Flatworms lack any true body cavities, roundworms have a pseudocoelom, which is a simple body cavity, while segmented worms have a true coelom, a more complex body cavity . These anatomical differences reflect evolutionary adaptations to their respective lifestyles and ecological roles.

Conservation efforts often focus on species like the Philippine eagle and tamaraw due to their ecological significance and the role they play in their habitats, such as being top predators or unique herbivores . Challenges to these efforts include habitat loss, human encroachment, and poaching, which require multifaceted strategies involving habitat protection, legal enforcement, and community engagement.

Mollusks are characterized by having soft bodies that are partially covered by hard shells, and examples include oysters, clams, and scallops . This distinguishes them from crustaceans, which are also shellfish but have firm shells and segmented bodies.

Roundworms, having a body cavity but no segments, are often found in environments that require simplicity in structure, such as parasitic habitats within host organisms. Segmented worms like earthworms, which possess body segmentation, are more suited for environments that benefit from their burrowing ability, such as soil ecosystems that they help aerate and enrich .
