Question 1

The figure shows a lamp located three units to the right of the y-axis and a shadow created by the
elliptical region x 2+ 4 y 2=5. If the point (-5,0) is on the edge of the shadow, how far above the x-
axis is the lamp located?

Question 2
9
d 8
Find 9
( x ln x ) and all the derivatives before it.
dx

Question 3

A television camera is positioned 4000 ft from the base of a rocket launching pad. The angle of
elevation of the camera has to change at the correct rate in order to keep the rocket in sight. Also,
the mechanism for focusing the camera has to take into account the increasing distance from the
camera to the rising rocket. Let’s assume the rocket rises vertically and its speed is 600 ft/s when
it has risen 3000 ft.

a. How fast is the distance from the television camera to the rocket changing at that
moment?
b. If the television camera is always kept aimed at the rocket, how fast is the camera’s angle
of elevation changing at that same moment?

Question 4

Suppose that the only information we have about a function is that

f ( 1 ) =5 and the graph of its derivative is as shown in the diagram to
the right.

a. Use a linear approximation to estimate the values of f (0.9)

and f (1.1) .
b. Are your estimates in part (a) too large or too small? Explain.
Question 5

Find the derivative. Simplify where possible.

a. y=x coth ( 1+ x 2 ) c. f ( t )=csch t (1−ln cosh ( t ))

b. f ( x )=ecosh ( 3 x ) d. f ( s )=sech 2 (e s )

Question 6

Between 0°C and 30°C, the volume V (in cubic centimeters) of 1 kg of water at a temperature T
is given approximately by the formula below.
2 3
V =999.87−0.06426 T +0.0085043 T −0.0000679 T

Find the temperature at which water has its maximum density between 0°C and 30°C. Do the
same for the minimum density.

Question 7

At 2:00 PM a car’s speedometer reads 30 mi/h. At 2:10 PM it reads 50 mi/h. Show that at some
time between 2:00 and 2:10 the acceleration is exactly 120 mi/h2.

Question 8

Consider the functions f (x), g(x ) and h( x) below.

2
f ( x )=cos x−2 sin x , 0< x <2 π
g ( x )=e 2 x +e x h ( x )=x 2 ln x

a. Find the intervals on which f is increasing or decreasing.

b. Find the local maximum and minimum values of f .
c. Find the intervals of concavity and the inflection points of f .
