Understanding Light and Reflection Basics

Light is a type of energy that travels at a speed of 3 × 10^8 m/s in a vacuum and can reflect or refract. Reflection occurs when light bounces off surfaces, with regular reflection producing clear images and diffused reflection scattering light. Objects can be real or virtual based on whether incident rays actually meet or appear to meet, and similarly, images can be classified as real or virtual based on the behavior of reflected rays.

Notes on Light and Reflection

1 Light
• Light is a type of energy that lets us see things.

• It moves very fast and can bounce off surfaces (Reflection) or bend
when it changes medium (Refraction).

• Light is that part of the electromagnetic spectrum which lies in the

visible region.

2 Some Basic Properties of Light

• Light is a transverse wave and travels with speed

c = 3 × 108 m/s in vacuum.

• Light travels in a straight line.

• The path of light is called a ray.

• A bundle of rays is called a beam.

• Light carries energy and momentum.

• Formula:
v = fλ
where v = speed of light, f = frequency, λ = wavelength.

• Colour is a property of wavelength:

– Shorter wavelength → blue/violet

– Longer wavelength → red/orange

3 Reflection of Light
Reflection of light is the bouncing back of light rays when they hit a surface,
like a mirror.

Types of Reflection
• Regular Reflection: Occurs on smooth surfaces, producing clear im-
ages (e.g., mirror).

• Diffused Reflection: Occurs on rough surfaces, scattering light in all

directions.

Laws of Reflection
• The angle of incidence (∠i) is equal to the angle of reflection (∠r).

• The incident ray, reflected ray, and the normal all lie in the same plane.

4 Object and Image

Object: The point where incident rays meet or appear to meet.

Types of Objects
• Real Object: If incident rays actually meet at a point.

• Virtual Object: If incident rays appear to meet at a point.

Image: The point where reflected rays meet or appear to meet.

2
Types of Images
• Real Image: If reflected rays actually meet, the image is real.

• Virtual Image: If reflected rays appear to meet, the image is virtual.
