CHAPTER TWO: OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE (WATER DISTRIBUTION)
The time allocated for the distribution department was two weeks. It a system through
which the
water is portable water is transported from the centralized treatment plant to the
customers. This
system aims to preserve the quality and quantity of water as well as maintain
sufficient pressures
in the water distribution systems.
Basically, the system contains of network pipes, pumps, valves storage tanks and
reservoirs.
Duties:
should be capable of supplying water at all intended places within the town with a
reasonably sufficient pressure head.
It should be cheap with the least capital construction cost
It should be safe as not to cause failure at pipeline bursting
In this department, the performed duties are:
Digging and levelling of trenches for pipe laying
New connection of 4,6 and 12-inch pvc pipes
Fixing of air pressure valves
Operating of different water valves for correct water rationing
Construction of new water chambers
Connection of sluice valve and fire hydrant
CHAPTER 3: PRODUCTION
The sector offers treatment of water from the intake so as to provide clean water for human
consumption.
Treatment processes include the following:
WATER
INTAKE
TO THE
CUSTOME
screenin
STARAGE
TANK
ADDITION OF
AL2(SO4)3
POST
CHLORINATION
FLOCCULATIO
FILTRATION
SEDIMENTATIO
a) Screening- Water from the constructed weir passes through the screens where large
suspended particles i.e. Tree leaves & branches, stones, plastics are trapped by mesh-like
welded metals before flowing in the water pipes. AERATION- is done through passing
water in the transmission main which has sand at the edges of the pipe.
b) Coagulation- Aluminum Sulphate (Alum) is mostly used as the coagulant in this step which
neutralizes negative charge in water thus allowing suspended particles to bond and form
semisolid lumps. Pre-chlorination is also done in this stage to kill bacteria, fungi and other
pathogens in the water.
c) Flocculation- It’s a physical process where formation of large clusters/ flocs in water takes
places. Alum acts as the Catalyst in this whole process.
d) Sedimentation- Small particles and sediments are separated in this stage thus sediments are
allowed to settle at the bottom of the sedimentation tank.
e) Decantation- Clear water above the settled sediments flows through the water troughs
simultaneously.
f) Filtration- MEWASS used sand filters where water passes through the filtering medium
before post-chlorination step.
g) Disinfection- This is the final stage of water treatment before water is discharged into the
storage tank for distribution purposes. MEWASS uses Chlorine which kills harmful micro
organisms & pathogens contained in water.
READING AND RECORDING OF MASTER METERS
Reading of Master meters is done on daily basis and recorded. This helps in; -
Determining the amount of water in use within the water treatment plant and water supplied to the
consumers.
Determining Non-revenue water which may alert of any major bursts, Illegal connections or any
other kind of unmetered and unbilled water from the plant.
Determining the dosage amount that should be used as per the daily water production.
PREPARATION OF CHEMICALS
MEWASS uses Aluminum Sulphate (Alum) and Calcium Hypochlorite (Chlorine) as the main
chemicals.
Chlorine helps to kill Viruses, germs & bacteria contained in raw water.
Alum reacts with carbonates contained in the water to form solid clusters which settles at the bottom
of the flocculation basins and sedimentation tanks.
MONITORING CHEMICAL DOSAGE PERFORMANCE
This is primarily done in the Laboratory after every two hours to test water Physical and
Chemical parameters like; - Residue Chlorine, Alkalinity, Conductivity, Turbidity, pH,
Temperature among others.
BACKWASHING OF FILTERS
Backwashing of filters is done on daily basis so as to remove debris from the water filter medium.
It’s done manually by use of long Brooms used to stir and clean mud from the CTU’s and backwash
water leaves the system through the bell mouth through the perforated filters to lagoon/ sludge bed
where it is later recycled and Pretreatment takes place.
Coarse and fine sand is contained in the filter medium for filtration purposes which helps reduce
water overloading or clogging which may result to low water discharge.
WATER PUMPING TO VARIOUS ZONES
MEWASS has got three pumps for distributing water to the eight zones through elevated tanks
installed in the treatment and High-Level Treatment plant (HLT) too.
Pumping water ensures that there is equal distribution to the esteemed customers and District
Metered Areas. (DMA)
INTAKE WORKS
A water intake is a structure constructed to abstract water from a specific source.
MEWASS raw water is abstracted from River Kathita where Intake is constructed and flows by
gravity to Water Treatment Plant.
Screens mostly contains trapped large particles from flowing water or other suspendematter which
may clog or block water discharge to the pipe systems.
CHAPTER 4: NON-REVENUE WATER
Non-revenue water is water that has been produced and lost before it reaches the customer.
It is caused poor operations and maintenance, of active leakage control and poor quality of
underground assets has the following components:
unbilled authorized consumption
Apparent losses [water theft and metering inaccuracies]
Real losses [from transmission lines, storage facilities, distribution mains or service connections
on this department the allocated time was two weeks of the attachment period
None revenue water department deals with a number of things like;
Losses caused by illegal connection
or water theft
Leaks or busts
PATROLLING ALONG THE MAIN WATER LINES
The patrol is done to check if the is any damage to the water line like bust and water leaks
CHAPTER 5: SEWERAGE
WASTE WATER TREATMENT [GAKOROMONE PLANT]
Waste water treatment involves biological process. Daily checkup of the influent to ensure that
exhauster’s disposal is not containing oil that may affect the entire treatment process.
Treatment is classified into two:
ATTACHMENT CONCLUSION
Being the company in the country with good performance and quick in terms
of service . Has a very important impact to the community.
It has the tremendous growth both in terms of structure and number of ployees
employed on permanent leading to good performance.
During the period I gathered numerous skills necessary for any construction
administration who want to be successful in the industry for instance, plumbing
quotation skill, sourcing skills, ordering skills, supply skills among other skills.
The organization has a well-structured management headed by the firm manager
who has the co- ordination with the other contructors
Reflection on personal development during the field of attachment
I set up goals during my attachment period to develop and improve areas that I
find needed to be improved
The working areas I developed and improved in during my 12 weeks
attachment period are the following.
Worked effectively
My main focus was how to work effectively. I have achieved this during my
attachment period by working and using a diary. It existed for the work that
needed to be done first and had more priority than others daily tasks while the
diary consisted of the tasks done and those pending to be done are future.
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT
I had to make sure that the best material control method is used to make the
stock last more for the perishable goods just in time was really applicable to
gather for the going bad.
STOCK LOCATION
I had to choose appropriate stock location for easy retrieval of goods and easy
dedication of theft example fixed stock location was appropriate.
STORE LAYOUT
Store layout was to be worked on in order to be able to minimize the
available space depending on what was to be stored.
Conclusion
At first the attachment period was not enjoyable since I had to familiarize with both workmates
and the working environment. As time went by it turned out to be very fruitful. I gained
experience and skills which is required in plumbing . I could issue motor policies, issue and key
in hotel data, credits and renewals notices. I also learnt to appropriate that theory without
practice is dead, to be patient and being tolerant. I am now a better person due to the attachment
experience both at work and personal level. However I wasn’t exposed to some areas like claims
department which could have equipped me with other necessary skills.
Recommendation
The management should increase the number of working tools to the underwriters so that work
can be made easier.
