Call for Papers and Sessions for Two Economics Conferences
SGE Annual Conference in Washington, DC, on November 5-6, 2012 Co-sponsored by George Washington Universitys Economics Department
SGE Sessions at the Annual Conference of the Allied Social Science Associations /American Economic Association, San Diego, CA on January 4-6, 2013
SGE is organizing these sessions is to promote economic thought that will be beneficial to government economists (in all types of governments national, state, tribal, and municipal). The sessions will provide valuable contributions to existing knowledge and understanding of economic ideas, and foster improvements in how economics is practiced. Sessions involve the presentation of 3-5 papers, which are reviewed by discussants and which allow for a question-and-answer period. This call for papers and sessions is open to all individuals who share the above-mentioned objectives. In the case of proposed, individual papers, the Society will organize selected papers into sessions and invite others to serve as discussants. There is no fee for submitting an application for paper presentations or for entire proposed sessions. However applications will only be accepted from current SGE members or from individuals purchasing a membership (for $25 per year) in their application. Anyone can join SGE who shares an interest in government economics. Papers and sessions will be selected based on an objective, double-blind peer review process, where there will be no favoritism based on affiliation or seniority. Proposals require only a 500-word (maximum) abstract and 300-word (maximum) justification statement, which together will form the basis of the selection. For more details, and to apply for a paper or organized session, visit the Call for Papers on the SGE Website at [Link]. The deadlines for applications are May 15, 2012 for the AEA meetings, and September 30, 2012 for the SGE Conference.
Additional Information on the SGE Conference
As in 2009 and 2010, the SGE Conference on November 5-6, 2012 will be in the Marvin Center of George Washington University (800 21st St. NW), a few blocks from the Farragut West and Foggy Bottom Metro stations in Washington, DC. Ample space has been reserved for as many as 35 breakout sessions on the wide range of topics. Applications are welcome for papers by government and nongovernment authors on all topics that may interest government economists. As in prior SGE conferences, distinguished presentations will be given by leading experts. Among the distinguished speakers for 2012 will be Dr. Natwar M. Gandhi, Chief Financial Officer for the District of Columbia, who is responsible for the citys finances, including its approximately $7 billion in annual operating and capital funds. Among his many great accomplishments, Gandhi served as associate director of Tax Policy and Administration for the US General Accounting Office (GAO). He has received numerous distinguished awards for his having turned around the DC governments financial status from being deep in debt to having a substantial surplus. Other distinguished leaders in government economics will be presenting as well. (SGE is now in the process of inviting presentations by other leading experts.) A special, one-day training seminar on Integrity, Ethics, and Responsible Leadership in Economics will be offered on the first day as an alternative to the plenary presentations (which will not overlap with paper presentations on the second day). This interactive and engaging seminar will be led by Deirdre McCloskey (author of The Cult of Statistical Significance), George DeMartino (author of The Economists Oath), Susan Offutt (Chief Economist, GAO), and Bryan Roberts (Nathan Associates). The Society of Government Economists is collaborating with a newly formed network of Indian Country Economists to host unique sessions on economic research that will be useful for tribal governments and Native Americans. Conference registration includes a two-year membership to SGE (or extended membership by two years for existing members). The registration fee (in total for the two days) is $135, or $175 to include the one-day, interactive training seminar.
