RC Controller Setup for H.E.L.I.O.S

The H.E.L.I.O.S RC Setup Guide provides instructions for integrating a Radio Controller, such as the TX12, with H.E.L.I.O.S using XOutput to simulate gamepad input in Unreal Engine. It covers the installation of XOutput, configuration of the TX12 controller, and the steps to ensure proper gamepad emulation and integration with H.E.L.I.O.S. Following these steps allows users to effectively control drone simulations in Unreal Engine.

H.E.L.I.O.

S
RC Setup Guide
This RC Setup Guide is designed to help you integrate a Radio Controller (such as the TX12)
with H.E.L.I.O.S using XOutput. By following these instructions, you can simulate a standard
gamepad input in Unreal Engine, allowing H.E.L.I.O.S to interpret your RC sticks as drone
controls.

1. XOutput Installation and Setup

1.1. Download XOutput

• Click here to download XOutput.

• This downloadable ZIP file includes the main [Link] application.

1.2. Extract and Place XOutput

• Unzip (if necessary) and copy [Link] onto your Desktop or any preferred
folder on your computer.

1.3. Open XOutput

• Double-click [Link] to launch the software.

• If prompted by Windows SmartScreen, allow it to run.

2. TX12 Controller Configuration (Example)

2.1. Connect Your TX12

• Use a USB cable (or a simulator dongle) to connect your TX12 to your computer.

• Power on the transmitter. Windows should recognize it as a generic game

controller (or HID device).

2.2. Verify Device Detection

• In XOutput, look for the TX12 entry (it may be listed as “USB Controller” or a
similar name).

• If it doesn’t appear, check your cable connection or install any necessary drivers.
3. Gamepad Emulation

3.1. Assign Axes

• In XOutput, click “Add Controller” to create a new virtual gamepad.

• After the new virtual controller appears under “Game Controllers,” click “Edit”
on that controller.

• You will see LX, LY, RX, RY (the joystick axes). Click “Configure” next to each
axis, then move your TX12 joystick in the same direction shown in the XOutput
animation.

• Make sure the minimum and maximum values align with your stick movements
(these may vary but often range from 0 to 100).

3.2. Check Movement

• Move each stick on your TX12 and observe how it moves in the XOutput virtual
gamepad preview.

• Confirm Lx matches the left stick’s horizontal movement, Ly matches the left
stick’s vertical movement, and so on.

3.3. Confirm Axis Directions

• If the axes appear reversed (e.g., pushing forward shows backward movement),
use the Invert option in XOutput’s settings to correct the direction.
4. Integration with H.E.L.I.O.S

4.1. Start Virtual Gamepad

• When you have assigned all axes correctly, close the Window in XOutput.

• Click “Start” to enable the virtual gamepad emulation.

4.2. Open H.E.L.I.O.S Demo/UE Project

• Important: XOutput must be running and the virtual controller must be Started
before you launch Unreal Engine. Otherwise, UE may fail to detect your virtual
gamepad.

4.3. Activate Radio Controller Input

• Once inside your H.E.L.I.O.S project, open your settings.

• Turn on “Radio Controller” (set it to True). H.E.L.I.O.S will now interpret the
gamepad signals as RC inputs.

Congratulations!
You’ve successfully set up your Radio Controller to work with H.E.L.I.O.S using XOutput. This
integration brings you closer to a realistic drone flight experience within Unreal Engine.
