GEOMETRIC METHOD

THE OPERATIONS TO BE CARRIED OUT

The essential steps to perform a geometric correction are:

1- Open the image to be straightened.
2- Identify a series of Horizontal and Vertical lines.
3- Calculate the Vanishing Points and the Transformation Parameters.
4- Identify the area of the image to straighten.
5- Establish a scale factor for dimensions X and Y.
6- Straighten the image.

Let’s also leave the WORK INTERPOLATION of the program on the methodology of

1_OPEN THE IMAGE TO STRAIGHTEN

Start the RDF program, choose the Geometric rectification method,
so from the main dropdown menu choose the option:
Initial Image/Open (the loadable files are those in BMP and JPG format)
indifferently in grayscale or in RGB
If you want to open another image, you must first close the current one.
loaded with the command:
Initial Image/Close.

IDENTIFY A SERIES OF HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL LINES

From the main dropdown menu, select the option:
Identify straight lines
In the dialog box, open the drop-down menu and choose first:
Horizontal Stripes draw the Horizontal Lines from left to right in a
number between 2 and 8.
poi
Vertical Lines (draw the vertical lines from bottom to top in a
number between 2 and 8.
3_CALCULATE THE VANISHING POINTS AND THE PARAMETERS OF THE TRANSFORMATION
From the same dropdown menu as the previous step, choose:
Calculate vanishing points
so:
Calculate parameters
To this, the program automatically performs calculations on both the gaps and the calculation of
some parameters that it will use to carry out the straightening.
Having done this, close all dialog windows.

4_IDENTIFY THE IMAGE AREA TO STRAIGHTEN

From the main drop-down menu, select the option:
Select sampling area
With this command, you will go over the area that needs to be straightened.
program (after tracing the third side of the area, the outline will be closed
automatically), so close the dialog window that shows the positions
of the initial and final x and y.

5_ESTABLISH A SCALE FACTOR FOR DIMENSIONS X AND Y

From the main drop-down menu, select the option:
RDF
In the dialog box that appears, you need to enter the known measurements of a
size of the x and one of the y in relation to the unit of measure used by RDF; the

for the heights.
values in meters of a pixel
correct image resolution (dpi)
This procedure represents the most important part of the straightening.
since it provides the program with a scaling factor to relate to.

6_RESONATE THE IMAGE

After completing the scaling factor procedure, in the dropdown menu of the same
dialog box where the dimensions have been set, start the straightening
with the command:
RDF
The program will now straighten the image using a kind of
scanning.

on the image itself.
