Resetting 1998 Neon Computer Guide

The document explains how to reset the computer of a 1998 Neon car to diagnose the error code that is causing the engine not to start. It describes the process of turning the key on and off 3 times to make the check engine light flash and display the error code. It then provides a list of common error codes with a brief description of each.

Dear friends, I would greatly appreciate anyone who could tell me how to reset the
computer of a 1998 Neon (1G). The thing is that my car won't start when
I turn the key and the check engine light turns on in the dashboard.

I have been researching and so far I have found this method to know what the
error code without having a scanner:

Turn off the radio and close the doors, turn the key to the 'on' position.
In the start, return to 'ACC' and then back to 'on' three times. That is, ACC ON ACC ON.
ACC ON

With the key in ON in the third sequence, the check engine light on the dashboard
it will start to blink.

Count the blinks and it will indicate the codes, each code is formed by two
digits for example it is normal to start with code 12 (a blink-a pause-two
blinks

Each indicated digit can only be from one to nine, if you count more than nine in a
you made a mistake and you must start over.

A sequence without fault codes would be: 12 and then 55, the twelve supposedly indicates
that the battery was recently disconnected but it is normal for it to appear at the start
from the codes even if you have not disconnected the battery, code 55 indicates end of
list of codes.

You would see the previous sequence like this: a blink - pause - two blinks - long pause
- five blinks - pause - five blinks.

This is the error code list for vehicles without a digital dashboard:

11
Circuit signal in distributor
If there is no ignition signal present since the last time the memory was
reset. The engine has not been started since the last time the computer was
reset

12
Battery power supply to the computer
The battery has been disconnected in the last 33 - 100 starts.

13
MAP Sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure), pneumatic failure
No signal change, pneumatic failure, possible leak in the vacuum line.
14
MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure), electrical failure
Voltage on MAP sensor greater than 4.7 volts or less than 0.02 volts

15
Speed sensor
If decelerating, being indicated less than 3 kph for more than 10 seconds

16
Battery voltage sensor or knock sensor
The battery decreases its voltage by 4 volts for more than 14 seconds. Or it fails in the sensor.
of detonation.

17
Cooling system
The engine is too cold. The coolant does not reach 160°F after 8 minutes.

21
Oxygen sensor
If the sensor stays in the neutral position for too long. If it does not indicate condition of
rich/poor mixture for 2 - 12 minutes

22
Coolant temperature sensor
If the voltage is greater than 4.96v or less than .51v.

23
Air charge temperature sensor
If the voltage is greater than 4.96v or less than .51v.

24
TPS sensor (throttle position)
If the voltage is greater than 4.7v or less than .16v.

25
Minimum AIS (Automatic Idle Speed) control
Appropriate voltage not present.

26
MPI: Injectors 1 & 2
Injectors 1 or 2 do not activate correctly
TBI: The maximum voltage of the injector is not achieved.

27
MPI: Injectors 3 & 4
Injectors 3 or 4 do not activate correctly
TBI: Injector failure

31
Purge solenoid (Mexican cars do not have this solenoid)
Solenoid does not turn on and off correctly.

32
Models 84 to 86: Burned out bulb or damaged wires.
Models 87 to 95: Failure in the bypass valve solenoid (BOV).

33
A/C Relay
The relay does not turn off and on properly. Short circuit in A/C.

34
Models 84 to 86: EGR Solenoid (Only U.S.) does not turn on and off properly.
Models 87 to 95: Servo does not work properly when the cruise control is on.
on (possible damage to solenoid).

35
Radiator fan relay
The relay does not turn off and on properly.

36
Turbo wastegate control
The wastegate solenoid does not turn on and off correctly.

37
Barometric solenoid
Solenoid does not turn on and off correctly

41
Alternator
Battery voltage to ASD (auto shutdown relay) less than
11.75v for more than 22 seconds. Failure in the alternator circuit.

42
Models 84: Open or short circuit of the injector.
Models 85 to 95: Auto shutdown relay, no voltage or
failure in the relay.

43
Spark control
Failure in the coil circuit or damaged coil.

44
Models 84: Failure in the logical module.
Models 85 to 87: Battery temperature sensor out of range. Voltage higher than
4.9v or less than 0.04v
Models 88 to 95: Failure in the SMEC (computer). J2 not present in SMEC. Fuse.
melted computer interior. Problem in harness.

45
