Impact of Alcoholism on Education in Maputo

This document presents the plan for a research project on the impact of alcoholism on education at Josina Machel Secondary School in Maputo. The research will analyze the causes of high alcohol consumption among students, identify policies to reduce it, and propose strategies to mediate the situation of alcoholism in education. The approach will be deductive and will involve bibliographic research and interviews with students and teachers.

This project arises within the scope of the MEIC course taught at the University
Pedagogical, delegation of Massinga with the following theme: Analysis of the Impact of

alcoholism in education; case study Secondary School Josina Machel, Maputo.

This project is subject to the theme: Analysis of the Impact of alcoholism on education;
case study Josina Machel Secondary School, Maputo.

[Link]
Regarding the delineation of the theme, it is based on the fact that in this region,
currently there is a growing number of people attending classes under the influence of
alcohol, this situation has been occurring in our country in general, especially in the areas
urban areas specially at Josina Machel Secondary School in Maputo.

The topic under study is relevant as the school community will have
scientific knowledge about the negative consequences caused by the
alcohol consumption in teaching and learning.

RAMOS (2004:61) states that 'the effect of alcohol increases considerably in the
developing countries, with this situation having serious consequences at the level of
health, of school and social adaptation.
The interest in conducting a study on this social phenomenon is because it affects our
societies on one side, I hope this study will be a subsidy for the social sciences
In general, considering the improvement of the social sciences aimed at overcoming this.
situation.
Another equally important argument is due to the fact that the author has experienced
this fact when a student of this school where it was possible to witness sabotage situations
of classes caused by students consuming alcoholic beverages.

2.1. Delimitation of the research

According to LAKATOS and MARCONI (1992:102), the process of delimiting the theme is only given

finished when the geographical and spatial delimitation of the same is done, therefore, in
Regarding the space, the study will be conducted in the city of Maputo specifically.
at Josina Machel Secondary School. As for the period, it goes from last year until today.
The choice of that location was due to the fact that the author of the project had verified that
situation with the highest incidence at that school.

2.2. Problematisation
The good relationship between the teacher and the students, and among classmates, contributes
positively for the good academic performance of students.
alcoholism contributes in a certain way to low academic performance, just as
example of Class A of the 10th Grade of Josina Machel Secondary School, where it was possible

creating an environment of agitation and distraction on the part of interested students in
understand the subject.
The most concerning fact is that the students involved in this issue are young and
teenagers who would do a lot for intellectual, social, and economic development of
country.

According to GRACHANE (2004:11), "the consumption of alcohol by young people has

more serious consequences than for adults, before reaching adulthood
the liver still cannot effectively process the alcohol present in the blood.

Moreover, alcohol abuse is above all the pursuit of certain diseases that can lead to
the consumers the loss of memory or even death.
5

In GITLOW's view (1991:15), 'talking about alcoholism is to say that a consequence of

level of social and cognitive development of behavioral disorders
self-destructive, anti-social of violence, depression from alcohol abuse.

Therefore, the author of this project, aware of the great need for change
behavior by adolescents and young people ESG11, in order to achieve results
positive from the Ministry of Education, and according to the problematization
writing, the following question arises:
In light of this reality, the following question arises: what strategies to adopt?
way to reduce the high rates of consumers of alcoholic beverages in
teaching and especially at the Josina Machel Secondary School?

A hypothesis is a supposed answer to the problem to be investigated. The origin of hypotheses.
could be in the unsystematic observation of facts, in the results of other research,
in existing theories, or in simple intuition (GIL, 1999). The fundamental role of
hypotheses in research is to suggest explanations for the facts. They can be true or
false, but, whenever well elaborated, lead to empirical verification - which is the
purpose of scientific research. However, for Gil (1999), the model of explanation
causal is not suitable for social sciences, due to the large number and the
complexity of the variables that interfere in the production of these phenomena.
According to SILVA (2001:29), the hypothesis is a statement made in an attempt to verify the
validity of an existing response to a problem.

In an attempt to seek possible solutions to the previously raised issue, there are
the following of primary and secondary character:

Main hypothesis

General Secondary Education of the First Cycle

Secondary hypotheses
If the Ministry of Education promoted awareness campaigns in schools
would contribute to the reduction of alcoholism;
If teachers and guardians coordinated in the direction of
advising students not to consume alcoholic beverages could reduce
the number of consumer students;
If teachers conducted awareness campaigns in the communities so that

expected from the joint work of the teacher and students, expressing knowledge,
skills and habits to be assimilated according to methodological requirements.
The materialization of this theme has the following objectives of a character:

A fieldwork will be carried out, where the data collection in the fieldwork will be based
is primarily based on semi-structured interviews, through a script that will be
previously prepared using the Portuguese language.
Deductive
According to LAKATOS and MARCONI (1992:106), "part of theories and laws that in
most of the time predicts the occurrence of general phenomena", thus, the work
it will be based on this approach method, that is, the phenomenon will first be analyzed
place in its generality at the level of the country and finally in a particular way, to address
it will be the same at the level of the Josina Machel Secondary School.

Procedure
Literature Review - this method according to Lakatos (1996:86), places the author
in direct contact with what was written at the disposal of this, relating to the abuse
of alcohol, specifically manuals related to alcoholism. This method will serve
to provide theoretical foundations on various elements that directly or indirectly
are related to the problem of excessive alcohol consumption.

Statistical Method - according to Lakatos (1992:106), will allow the qualification of

Data chosen from the survey with students and interviews with teachers to facilitate
your analysis and interpretation.

Direct Observation Technique - this, according to Lakatos (1992:107), consists of

data collection at the site where the phenomenon occurs. It will allow for observation of the
methodology used to combat the practice of consuming alcoholic beverages.

5.0. Theoretical Reference

In order to address the problem, the author will have to rely on several authors who...
they were interested in the problem of alcoholism, books and scientific articles. Natália Ramos,
António Grachane, Giltow, Klaus. Are clear examples of authors who cared.
with the issue of alcoholism.

Speaking about alcoholism, GRACHANE (2004:9) refers to "the frequent and ...
large quantities of alcoholic beverages create situations of dependence and habituation
besides the slow intoxication of the organism. If alcoholism is the cause of low
educational utilization by the majority of consumer students, so there is a need to
fight it.

RAMOS (2001:73), "some people after ingesting a certain amount of

some people become happy and playful, while others become nervous, noisy and
aggressive." This shows how much the problem of alcoholism causes effects.
various for consumers.

KLAUS (1989:38) states that 'the alcohol, after being ingested, is rapidly absorbed'
reaching all parts of the organism through the blood, which can cause injuries,
the organs of the digestive system and the nervous system are the most affected.

[Link] Results
With the reflection raised in this research project, I hope to bring to light the
the need to combat the issue of alcoholism in schools, as well as in
society in general, especially the youth layer.

I also hope that this study will contribute positively in terms of influencing the
government strategies based on the hypotheses raised earlier with a view to
reduce the rate of alcoholism in education, since, with the reduction of this issue
We will be addressing other problems arising from alcoholism.

This chart shows the distribution of the activities planned throughout the research that
are distributed at moments and stages of the work's development. 'The lack of
the schedule in the project leads to many research efforts being extended indefinitely,
with long periods of uncertainty." This is why there is a need to make a
schedule table in this work.
