Pollution of the Nanay basin

INTRODUCTION
Water is a vital resource for human beings and their development; it has been so for many ages.
raised concerns about its availability, access, and use, as many
territories, lacking a significant supply, have faced severe crises leading to
up to desertification in its most complex degradation.

In general, the exploitation of natural resources is selective in nature and

predator, such as the massive extraction of millions of irapay leaves,
round woods for construction, fishing, and collecting ornamental fish, among others
activities are carried out without considering the principles of sustainability,
compromising the conservation of biodiversity and access to natural resources
from the population.

For this reason, this work on the pollution of the Nanay River has been developed, with
the purpose of determining the degree of pollution and carry out efforts
related to the conservation and protection of water resources. Despite this,
substantial investments are made to ensure the quantity and quality of water for the
current uses.

To counteract these trends and promote conservation and sustainable development

in the Nanay River it is necessary to expand the knowledge of the potential and the limitations of
the lands, of their natural resources and of the human population.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE
Determine the level of pollution in the Nanay River, so that
way to carry out an adequate use of water resources, ensuring their quality and
sustainability.

OBJECTIVES
- Ensure the conservation and sustainable use
of water resources.
- Ensure the consumption of quality water in the population and the management of water.
residuals.
- Promote sustainable productive activities in order to minimize the
negative impacts on the Nanay River.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

As the closest place to the pollution of the Nanay River, we will take as a point of
reference to Bellavista–Nanay (also known as Bellavista) is a distinctive neighborhood and
port within the northern section of the Punchana District in Iquitos. It is located on the banks
from the Nanay River, and near the Amazon River. It is an important access to reach other
tourist spots of Iquitos Metropolitan such as Padrecocha, Manacamiri, San Andrés, among others
others.

In the same neighborhood, there is the Boulevard Square of San Pedro and San Pablo, and
a market that contains a sample of the food from Iquitos.

At the Nanay port, we can observe the pollution of the Nanay River due to dumping.
sewage, garbage, and mining tailings.

The Nanay River is the main water source supplying the population of the city of Iquitos.

ANALYSIS OF THE WATER OF THE NANAY RIVER.

Nanay River Basin

It is located in the Amazon plain, within the jurisdiction of the province of Maynas, Region of Loreto;
It has an area of 1,721,343 hectares and an approximate population of 400,000 inhabitants.
It includes the population of the city of Iquitos. It constitutes a strategic basin for the
city of Iquitos because it is the main source of water collection for consumption
human.

SOCIAL FACTORS
The total population settled in the Nanay basin is estimated at 332,637 inhabitants.
Of this total, 91.2% (303,275 inhabitants) corresponds to the urban population, and only 8.8%
(29,362 inhabitants) is rural population.

ECONOMIC FACTORS
The economy involves the development of a wide range of activities, emphasizing
those of a productive and extractive type in rural areas.

- Agriculture, Livestock, Hunting, and Forestry.

- Fishing.
- Trade, Vehicle Repair, Automobiles, Motorcycles, Effects
personal items and household goods.

FISHING
According to the statistics from the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Production, the contribution
from the Nanay River, in the provision of fish for direct consumption by the population
regional is of little significance. The same does not happen with the local riverside population, which
take advantage of fish as the main source of animal protein. However, it is
the occurrence in the Nanay of "mijanos" or seasonal migrations of fish is known
during the beginning of the low season that supports an important fishery.

AQUACULTURE ACTIVITY
Currently, the producers of the Nanay basin consider fish farming as the
more profitable economic alternative, compared to agriculture, the
livestock farming, among other productive activities.

AGRICULTURE
Among all the economic activities carried out, the most widespread is agriculture.
Together, this activity demands 70% of the economically active population.
(PEA) of the basin, and possibly a similar percentage of global revenues from the
families come from this activity.

Pollution of the Nanay River

The pollution of the aquatic ecosystems of the basin is caused by various
productive activities (legal and illegal), industrial and urban activities that
They incorporate solid waste and wastewater into the water. Without prior treatment.

The Nanay River shows contamination by coliforms, with values above the limits.
allowed by the General Water Law for all uses.

Main Limitations
- Extractive activities such as roundwood, roofing leaves, wood
for firewood, fishing for consumption, capture of ornamental fish, hunting, among others,
maintains its impacts on the substantial decrease of biodiversity in the basin.

- High levels of pollution, especially due to the disposal of urban waste.

- Legal framework for the monitoring of water pollution.

- Insufficient information on the use of resources, hydrology, standards of

water quality, among others.

- Insufficient organization of key actors (gorel, municipality, sedaloreto and the

Peru's navy) for the integrated management of the basin.

- Insufficient culture for the use of drinking water and management of solid waste
wastewater.

INITIATIVES AND ALTERNATIVES FOR SOLUTION REGARDING MANAGEMENT OF

WATER RESOURCE OF THE NANAY BASIN

Monitoring and Control of Pollution

A priority action for the basin is to implement a monitoring system for the
pollution of the Nanay River and the main lentic aquatic environments (cochas).

- MINING AND INDUSTRY

Activities such as dredges should be prohibited, with the
extraction of gold due to the high risk it poses to the health of the population
riparian. A fundamental requirement must relate to the fact that the industries that
they are found working in the basin, have adequate treatments that guarantee
that the water they use is released into the environment with the least amount possible of
pollutants.

The sawmills located along the Nanay basin must have ponds for
water treatment used for the preservation of wood, which is such as
They contaminate aquatic environments with arsenic. Full control must be exercised.
about these activities, which must be led by organizations
public (DIGESA), universities and institutes.

- REFORESTATION
Reforestation is emerging as an important activity within activities of
protection of the basin against erosion, sedimentation, and siltation of bodies
water caused by deforestation that has serious impacts on the biota and on the
ecological processes related to the Nanay basin.

Awareness.
Raise awareness among people about taking care of water bodies, not throwing products
pollutants and taking a responsible attitude towards the care of the Nanay River.

Goals to be achieved in the coming years:

Achieve equitable access to drinking water for the entire population

Improve the quality ofwater reducing pollution, eliminating
the dumping and minimizing the emission of chemical products and
hazardous materials.
Increase the efficient use of water resources in all
sectors and ensure the sustainability of extraction and
supply offreshwaterto address the shortage.
Protect and restore water-related ecosystems,
including forests, mountains, wetlands, rivers,
aquifers and lakes.

CONCLUSIONS.
Pollution is the alteration of the environment by foreign materials or
by others present in amounts higher than normal.

Water pollution is the addition of harmful foreign matter that

it deteriorates the quality of water, both for human and animal consumption as
for marine life and the irrigation of lands.
